opinions of living in Ashburn
Posted by: Hans Huckibein ()

Currently living in Alexandria and hate it. Looking for a change of pace. Something far away from the city yet close enough that it's within reach. I was thinking about moving out to Ashburn. I've been there once or twice and it seemed dead, but like it was on the up and up. Anyone living in ashburn/lived in ashburn that could give me some insight?

Make sure you have an offer before you decide to move. Ashburn to Arlington is a shit commute. At least an hour plus each way, and frequently 90 minutes or more.

Ashburn to Chantilly isn't wonderful, but it's doable.

If you are not sold on the idea of living in Ashburn, I wouldn't sign up for the Ashburn to Arlington commute. Get that Chantilly or Leesburg job first and then move.

What are you looking to get away from? What do you hate about Alexandria that you're looking to improve upon elsewhere?

Ashburn is kinda like Kingstowne 30 years ago.

Lived in Alexandria for three years, and if it's for the same reason I left, OP is probably tired of the nogs, libs and moderate-high crime.

Ashburn is nice but it is fucking dead. Nothing really to do out there other than watch the Redskins during the off-season practice at Redskins park. The creation of Loudoun 1 has made it a little more interesting but really, Ashburn outside of all that is unremarkable. Best barbeque in the area by the way can be found in Ashburn at Carolina Brothers. I would say it would be a great place to raise a family if Loudoun schools weren't shit.

What constitutes a good city to you mooks?

I don't get it. What do people actually do in the city? Does a big day consist of walking downstairs from your 1 BR apartment to the coffee shop in the morning, followed by browsing the markets and a dinner at 10 in some pretentious trendy little restaurant? Rinse and repeat every day? I don't get the appeal of a city like Alexandria/Arlington/DC outside of going to a Nats game, visit a museum or a nice night out at a theater and dinner..... those are all cool things to be sure, but once you have done them 5-10 times, doesn't it get old?

Apart from Old Town, most of Alexandria isn't "city" living. It's more like Annandale, full of illegals and you need to drive to get anywhere.

But yes, I sure prefer city living over cookie cutter vanilla Ashburn. If you like locking yourself into your media room and occasionally driving to your favorite restaurant (usually in a strip mall) in your luxury car, by all means move to Ashburn.

So, what do you do in Alexandria?

Out here we have 50-60 wineries/breweries (some better than others), paintball, pick your own fruit, hunting, fishing, WO&D trail, golf, Appalachian trail, each town has some good single owner/operator restaurants, halls for washed up 80's/90's bands to play....

Do you guys just walk around old town, Pentagon City and Target every weekend?

Western Fairfax/Ashburn is a totally different animal from the Eastern and Southern parts of our great county. As a 40 year old (never married) man, I can say that the Western part of Fairfax is more relaxed and has less traffic than the other parts of the county. Get your job before moving to the area though, because the commute to Alexandria will be a real bitch.

I'm curious, what exactly do you "do" in Arlington/Alexandria? I lived in Arlington for a few years and it wasn't anything special. The parking sucks, the houses are older/smaller, there's a lot more crime. What do you like about it? I've never had someone actually be able to answer this question, other than "we have lots of bars". What draw does DC have? I've spent plenty of time there, aside from the bars staying open later, it has almost nothing to offer.

Not as old as that 60-90 minute commute gets twice every day. It's not like Ashburn is any better either. It's a huge strip mall development with traffic out the wazoo.

Traffic is what keeps me in Fairfax. I like the home prices further west, but they are all cookie cutter and only have 1/4 acre lots. So now I pay a lot for my older FFX home with a half acre lot, but we're close to plenty of stuff. I'm always thinking about it, but that traffic...

Just the sense of well being by living around other people is enough reason for me never live out there. Being able to walk to restaurants, shops and being able to uber in to the city for $10 is pretty nice too. There's a reason it's a lot more expensive to live in Arlington or Old Town. Ashburn is pretty lame, even Fairfax has a lot more going on.

But hey... being able to walk to the local HOA pavilion to discuss this months meeting notes and talk about lawn lengths and violators is just what some people prefer.

Can't wait until the housing market crashes, all those 600k cookie cutter townhouses will (hopefully) drop to like 450k. They are still not worth that price!

Even though they are all chinese drywall and plywood covered with the fake stone looking siding, fake granite and builder grade wood floors and trim everywhere just painted to look nice and probably cost <$80k to build (at cost).....I watched them throw up a row of townhouses from bare earth to "ready to move in" in about 4 months no joke...swarms of hispanics working on them 24/7...

OF COURSE they hype up the area as being "Trendy" since everything is still pretty newly built compared to the rest of the NoVA area. Also setting the prices so high, keeps out a lot of the riff raff they want to keep that "we are the Joneses so you gotta keep up with us!" mentality.

I am going to laugh when a bunch of owners bail when the mortgage gets to be too much (I bet half of Ashburn is in there on ARM mortgages!) and rent out their townhouses to less desirable neighbors...then watch all the whites and indians rush to move out LOL.

Not to mention it is the same stores in any strip mall you can find in NOVA- nothing special about it. Only difference is the number of soccer moms living in the area and of course they need to paint their town as "perfect" too to show off to the other moms.

You''re paying for the name...>>> CASHBURN.

So, I basically hit it on the head describing the typical day for a millennial running around Arlington. I just cannot imagine "looking" at things for entertainment all the time rather than actually doing something. What would you guys do if Skynet took down the cell phone service/internet? It's funny when kids talk about a sense of community, meanwhile they have a hard time with face to face contact with another human.

I guess you pay your money you takes your choice. I'd rather own a 500K house in Loudoun (Leesburg) than pay rent roughly equivalent in an apartment in Arlington.

You sound seriously butthurt about the whole thing. Perhaps the housing market will fall a bit so you can finally afford to move out there.

If I'm moving out to the sticks, I'm not stopping in Loudoun I'll just continue all the way out to West Virginia.

That $500k house in Loudoun will be worth $525k in 5 years, and if the housing market corrects Leesburg will get hit hard while Arlington will not be affected. Most of Loudoun still hasn't even recovered from the crash in 2008. My home appreciates by about $1000 - $1500 per month so in the end it's really not a whole lot cheaper unless you're renting.

I was only considering Ashburn because of the job offers I have lined up, commute, and housing prices. Traffic is definitely something I worry about, and to compound that, I have been hearing talk of a potential Redskins stadium being built in Loudoun or Fairfax/Prince William. It's probably ten years down the road, but I'm sure that will make traffic even worse than it is now.

Stadium traffic is way overrated.
It's 9-10 games a year with preseason.

Look at the idiots in Del Ray.
They opposed the stadium at Potomac Yards (that went to MD) because of traffic on game day.
Now they're stuck with traffic and congestion everyday from Potomac Yards shopping center, condos, apartments.

Actually my ass is quite comfortable in this herman miller chair, thanks! ;)

But really...

Nope, I wouldn't buy any of those cheap drywall and plywood townhouses. I can get a REAL STONE OR BRICK or even WOOD (like LOG cabin style) house built for <600k. I already have a few acres out in the country, I am tweaking my business so I can work from home so I can stay out there for GOOD!

I am sorry, those that bought in Ashburn- one good windstorm (or big bad wolf) could blow your pretty little houses down...it's all aesthetics .... they LOOK good on the outside, but I doubt your townhouse will be all that great in 30 years watch....looking at the townhouses in Fairfax County that were built in the 90s...those are already falling apart- especially with the overcrowing in most units, a 3 bedroom townhouse is meant for no more than 6 people (2 per bedroom), yet I see 10+ living in some of them...

Consider Centreville. It's 5 minutes from Chantilly, just as soulless and chain-restaurant-infested as Ashburn, but 20-50% cheaper and the 10 miles further south mean 20-40 minutes off your commute if you someday work downtown again.

You could probably find something suitable between Chantilly and Herndon in all that infill suburban development. Ashburn is set back from Route 28. If you choose Ashburn, you need to move your job since the Metro isn't going all the way out in Loudoun Co.

If you don't mind kids playing in the streets and in your yard, come out to Ashburn.

There's no late-night partying unless it's you or your neighbors.

If you are active, then the proximity to the W&OD trail is nice.

Loudoun One is cool, but all the parents think so, too. It's kid central during the days.

Lots of cougars. I've been hit on by three of my female neighbors even though they are friendly with my wife.

Really disappointed that it's not more bike friendly. Bike lanes would be nice, otherwise you get rundown by some dumbass staring at their phone or some soccer mom not paying attention.

The only way in and out is Rt. 7 or Waxpool, unless you want to pay out the ass on the Greenway.

I'm planning to move out in the next year to some place that's more accessible to fun stuff. Tired of having to plan fun stuff around rush hour. Always have to look both ways when walking outside of my house because of nosey neighbors.

Hope you can financially keep up. Most teenagers will have nicer things than you. My friend took her kid to bus stop on first day of school and neighbor women belittled her because she wore Keds. If you you don't feed your kid 100% organic and give them all the latest electronics you will look like an unfit parent.

A lot of the houses are cookie-cutter with basic bitch features, but it has drawn a lot of people to the area and I'm grateful for the opportunities with all of the cuck's wives!

It's perfect if you want a very rigid, conventional lifestyle full of boring people in horrendous cookie-cutter housing developments. It's like the American Dream if you could order it off a fast-food dollar menu.

And it's not convenient either, unless you're a stay-at-home mom or someone easily entertained by casual chain restaurants.

As opposed to the LGBT/nigger/gook/spic/liberal lifestyle in Arlington/Alexandria/Annandale....

Pretty easy choice if you are white, over 30 and have any motivation beyond where to spend happy hour (the whole time on your cell phone) with your hipster douchebag asswipe buddies.

Face the facts. All of northern VA sucks. From Warrenton-Manassas all the way to the river and north to Leesburg. Horrendous traffic, rude abusive drivers, fucking immigrants everywhere that no longer even try to assimilate to the American lifestyle. And it's all over the top expensive.

A dinky townhouse in a neigborhood full of Indians and Pakis will run you $350K minimum. Taxes are outrageous. Crime. I could go on and on.

Oh I forgot, lots of niggers too.

Want an inexpensive, classic American and relatively pleasant living experience in Virginia? Move to Charlottesville. Not many immigrants, housing is pretty cheap, there is culture and history, moderate level of entertainment options and it's an all around great place to live. Jobs are a little hard to come by, but if you are willing to drive to Richmond or the hampton area for work, depending on what you want to do, you will be alright.

Drinking coffee and using social media are leisure activities, things a person might do to enjoy themselves. Sitting in traffic every day for long periods of time isn't recreational, no one does that to enjoy themselves. That's what makes your post so stupid, you sound angry that people take time to do things they want to do instead of sitting in traffic on route 7. it's retarded.

That's the point, if all it takes to keep you happy all day is drinking coffee and sitting on social media (FU excluded of course) then I guess Arlington is a really cool place to live. Definitely worth 700K for a PODS sized house there with all that going for it.

It's an hour on 64 one-way to Richmond, let alone Hampton Roads. Might as well move to Ashburn and commute to DC.

PODS sized house... that's funny because it's true.

You're the one claiming drinking coffee and social media are all they need to be happy. How do you know that?

If Ashburn is so great you should be telling people why it's so great. Instead of pretending like you're sure how coffee & internet are why people live inside the beltway.

Yup, Ashburn is a cluster traffic mess at rush hour. You would think there wouldn't be a rush hour in Ashburn but it's terrible.

Expect to sit in traffic in Ashburn for at least 30 minutes before getting clear of the area during rush hour. There are only four or five major roads to commute on and they get jammed to a snails pace.

Reston. It's Ashburn with more restuarants, more going on and it's cheaper. There are immigrants, but most of them are middle class/upper class asians. They are much more tolerable.

I also live in Alexandria and my best friend lives out in Ashburn so I am out there a lot.

Access to DC, Old Town area are positives for Alexandria.

Ashburn because land is cheaper, has many more restaurants and shopping than Alexandria. They have newer and larger restaurants and more variety.

But it's also a suburban vibe, soccer Moms and kids. If you have kids you'll probably like it, if not I am not so sure. If you are looking for younger single night life, you're better off if Alexandria, if you are looking to take the family to a chain restaurant a couple times a month, Ashburn is great.

Young people love having "lots to do" in the cities; by which they mean "plenty of bars and loud clubs with fighting screaming assholes to visit". And it's within walking or Uber distance!

Everything else (e.g. museums, Verizon Center) are just as accessible to people in Ashburn - you drive there (or to a Metro if you like walking around) - and spend the same amount of time visiting as someone who came from seven blocks away, and just as often. (That is, not very often.)

Restaurant scene in Arlington or DC may be slightly better than Ashburn, I guess. (Not generally impressed with DC on that count, though.)

Mainly, young people are easily impressed, terribly concerned with socializing with other mostly drunk young people who might fuck, and drinking. Especially drinking. They have SO MUCH GOING ON IN THE CITY that they need to go out and get drunk several times a week it's so exciting.

Most of the younger people I meet in DC are in love with the city -- it's so exciting! Compared to where they came from. Which is almost always some far away cornfield that barely has running water. (I am 100% serious about this. I used to have no idea how many young hicks came to DC to work.)

Met several young new residents of DC this week. They were SO EXCITED at having been to Reston Town Center. They were from a little town in the middle of nowhere. They are now living in DC trying to figure out things in the city.

Middle aged people in the city?
Dunno what their deal is.
They all seem bored as shit, but work downtown....

The other "city" place is of course Old Towne.
This is like a small version of DC -- lots of drunks.
Oh and TARGET is nearby if you live at the strip mall (aka "town center" complexes).
Yay!

Seriously. The world is mainly full of totally boring people with
nothing to do. They fall into two categories: live near the bars so
you can drink your miserable life away in the company of other losers;
or live out in the boonies and stay home and watch TV with your wife.

EXCITEMENT means: bored as shit, but if I can find a noisy place to
get drunk and watch the nigger girls fight each other, maybe I won't
notice how miserable I am.

None of these people are "doing" anything, day or night.
And sadly that's most people.

What really is the difference between that suburban tract in the photo, and in most parts of Fairfax County? You're telling me you can walk comfortably in Fx Co? Even Alexandria City - a very small portion is ped friendly, in my estimation.

I much prefer city life, but I would not call Alexandria excellent for that. It is a good place, but not an exceptional city per se.

You all have missed one big factor: Lurch lives in Ashburn. The King himself...!

Most of the Indians and Pakis that used to stink up Centreville and Chantilly migrated out to Ashburn. Lots of them are rude, pushy assholes who still have that caste mentality etched into their psyches, giving them the illusion of being above or better than everyone else. I actually heard a woman arguing with a restaurant manager because she refused to tip saying "we are from India and we have money", fucking priceless!. The women are sometimes pretty until they squeeze out a pup or two, then the whole body just falls apart, pretty sad. The poor guy's left with a fat, nasty pig with a lousy attitude that doesn't want to give him sex anyway. No wonder they rape everybody over there. Their kids are actually pretty cool though, because they've been westernized, Thank Vishnu.

Oh yeah, Foodie, the last decent Fuddruckers is in Ashburn, unless you want to travel down to godforsaken woodbridge. Also, in the same little shit shopping center (Pipeline Plaza) is one of the last Bertuccis Pizza's. Both places are probably doomed, so get 'em while you can.

I prefer Manassas to Ashburn. Manassas has character, a Civil War battlefield, a great location on the freeway out of town, and lots of down home places to eat. It's also a fairly cheap place to live.

Absolutely yes. There are many parts of Fairfax County that have excellent walking trails. UNLIKE Loudoun County, there are dozens and dozens of very nice stream valley parks all throughout Fairfax County with many many miles of walking trails. When I am in Loudoun County which is more often than I like there is never anywhere to hike/walk except on sidewalks. Fairfax is totally different.

Centreville still stinks, it is just more so from the rotting fish in the super H mart/grand marts and every other sign being in korean (?) and you can't read it to see what kind of business it is. Go to the IHOP in centreville- then go down the strip of stores and count the "american" ones. LOL.

Centreville also has a high population of hispanics (by the library).

Centreville is becoming more like Annandale every day (more Asian). The only thing Ashburn has better is newer construction, past that it is overrun with indians stinking it up today.

Of course, but I meant walking for a purpose, to a destination - groceries, drug store, to work...not pleasant in most parts of the county.

The trouble with Ashburn is that all the houses built at any one time are built from the same plans. For instance, if you want a townhouse in Ashburn Village, just find any house that is up for sale and look at the photos on the internet sites for house sales. If you have seen the inside of one, you have seen the inside of all of them.

The other problem is that when people go out and get drunk enugh and try to find their way back home when the bar closes, because all the houses look the same, they often end up trying to get into the wrong house and get shot.

Don’t renew that expensive car lease as you wait hours, EVERY WEEKDAY, to get to work on 66.
