Deceptive Pro-Meals Tax Propaganda DEBUNKED
Posted by: vote no on the meals tax ()
Date: August 28, 2016 03:45PM

The pro-meals tax contingent is appealing to those who believe the County's libraries are underfunded.

Note, however, that they says "may be able to raise revenue" for the libraries via the meals tax, but that passage of the meals tax "can also ensure" funding for the schools.

This is deception, plain and simple. Only 30% of the money from the meals tax would go to County services, and the County has released NO plans as to how this money would be spent.

In other words, the pro-meals tax people (read "FCPS") is talking a lot of crap.

Vote NO on the meals tax on November 8.

That is very strange because the BOS has already identified about $14 million in new spending to cover fire, police, mental health and early diversion initiative. I am also sure that they will also have some new spending requirements for their new toy with the Fairfax One Initiative so I guess if you are lucky the library may get enough funds to buy additional copies of Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals. I hear it is in high demand.

What a convincing argument. Were you captain of the debate team or something?

If the public sector has been starved, it isn't because Fairfax County residents haven't paid enough in taxes. Both the residential real estate tax rate and the average assessed values have risen significantly since 2009, significantly increasing the revenues Fairfax County residents have paid to the County treasury. Rates have risen so much that Fairfax County's rate is now significantly higher than Arlington and Alexandria. The problem is that EXPENSES have risen even faster.

FCPS has been paying Eric Jensen $9,000/day. Jensen lectures on neuroscience (a field he has no credentials in) and music (a field where many disagree with him). When a music teacher asked him to defend his position, he was, in a wonderfully chosen word, "flummoxed" by the question.

Jensen and those like him contribute, and contribute significantly, to the problematic FCPS financial situation. What's needed is not more taxes (Fairfax teeters on the brink of a tax revolt as it is), but less spending on frivolities, excesses, and exercises in empire building (i.e., turf fields, transgender initiatives).

The library system may have gotten some funds if the BOS split the revenue stream 50/50 between the General Fund and the School Board, however, with the 70/30 split the General Fund is already spoken for with previous year's commitments for funds going to the Police, Fire and Diversion programs.

1) At present, there are NO plans for tax relief.

2) At present, there are NO plans for additional library funding.

3) At present, there are NO plans for teacher raises.

VOTE NO ON THE MEALS TAx ON NOVEMBER 8.
