Meals Tax and Property Tax (vote NO on the meals tax)

In an ideal world, maybe, possibly, the Board of Supervisors would lower property taxes if the meals tax passed.

The truth of the matter is that passage of the meals tax IN NO WAY causes property taxes to go down. The truth of the matter is that passage of the meals tax IN NO WAY prevents an increase in property taxes.

So, do not vote for the meals tax if you think it will lower property taxes. It will not.

The BOS has already stated that there will be little to no funds available for property tax relief. The statement regarding tax relief was included to appease the two fiscally prudent supervisors on the Board.

Where did they say this? When I asked Chairman Bulova about this she said no definite plans had been made.

Sharon Bulova talks out of both sides of her mouth and gets away with it because most people do not pay attention to the meetings. The important part of Bulova's statement is what is NOT said such as definite plans for tax relief. During the debate for the referendum a motion to freeze property tax rates if the meals tax was passed in the fall was defeated by the Board. There has also been extensive talk about what will be spent with the proceeds from the taxes and those plans far exceed the amount that will be realized by the tax. This applies to both the BOS and the School Board.
