Is Washington Gas Flat Rate a Good Deal?

I got a flyer from Washington Gas offering to lock me in to a flat rate of $0.495 per Therm for a year.

Is this a good deal?

That's a ripoff. I get coupons for $0.325 per therm all the time.

If they thought they were going to make less money off of it, would they offer it to you?

Maybe. It seems like gas futures really. The gas company is betting the price of gas goes down. You are betting the price of gas goes up.

^^^ Exactly. They hope to off-load some risk, while consumers may hope to profit from taking on some risk. The $0.495 price is not cut-and-dried in either party's favor. We haven't replied yet, but being old and living on a fixed income, we'll probably go for it.

Makes little difference now. It's kind of a throw-back to when it was first deregulated and suppliers other than your utility could offer pricing and prices were rising or at least there was reasonable speculation that they could/would rise significantly. There's plenty of gas around now and any price change very likely would be small in the case that it does increase. Even if you bet right, then you probably won't get back enough of a difference to make up for the time that you spent thinking about it.

You think they're making that offer to help you or for their own benefit? Think about it!

That would be more than you were capable of. Look up the word "hedging". This is what AIG failed to do that caused them to collapse and need a bail-out.

You've been sniffing too much gas.

A recent study warned that by 2050 so much electricity will have been wasted into the earth that lightning will start shooting from the ground..

Global charging is a real danger. Save the earth, remove your grounding rod.

Hilarious.

I suppose the Earth is somewhat inductive but also fairly resistive. You aren't going to build up any massive non-localized charge.

As far as grounding rods, I am missing mine. It looks like they switched plastic water pipe and didn't drive in the appropriate grounding rods to maintain a proper ground. I hate amateurs.
