Best real BBQ joint in Fairfax County?
Posted by: Captain G ()

I'm new to the area and am eager to find some real slow-cooked, made with love real BBQ. Anything in this area?

P.S. If you suggest Dave's or Smoky Bones or some other national chain, you deserve to be shot.

"Made with love" BBQ sounds like it involves special sauce with a side of kinky.

I prefer just plain cole slaw and hot sauce.

If you're willing to drive over to Ashburn, try this place out: http://www.carolinabrothers.com/

I drove by it one day, and the smell "enticed me." Good stuff!

I've heard good things about this place at the Herndon golf course: http://www.jjdeli.com/

I haven't tried it myself, I keep on forgetting to go there.

I too was enticed by the smell, so I stopped in to try it.
When I went in and asked if it was NC BBQ, the dopey teenager at the counter replied, "No, we make it right here". Needless to say this didn't fill me with confidence, but I went ahead and got one.

It was ok, but lacked any real character. I love Burger Delights NC bbq and their type of cole slaw compliments it well. They now have some other type of bbq that isn't awful, but stick to the NC and you'll be good to go.

We like Willards up near the Expo Center on Willard Road. The restaurant decor isn't much, the people who work there are surly but the food is good. They also have some really delicious side orders.

Stay away from the 'homemade' pies...I don't know who's home they were made in, but I'd bet Giant's kitchen.

Order the burnt ends sandwich...its the best thing on the menu!!

LOL, now that's funny.

FWIW, I'm not much of a bbq fan, but I've been to Dixie Bones and really liked it. I recall the side dishes being very good, specifically a potato and cheese dish.

Red, Hot and Blue is not authentic BBQ. It's portion-controlled, mass produced chain restaurant food. They have about 35 locations.

While I have busted on Red, Hot and Blue before, if you are really hankering for BBQ, their ribs and potato salad are not bad. I think their brisket, pulled pork, chicken, etc, are all pretty dry, though.

I've been to a few parties that were catered by Red, Hot, and Blue, and they actually did a great job on the food. I've never really understood the controversy of what constitutes "real BBQ", it's sorta hard to screw up something as simple as meat with sauce, so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend RH&B's for catering.

My recommendation would go to Willards BBQ

Their burnt ends, and pork sandwiches are the best. the ribs are good too.
I also enjoy there corn bread and sauces.

Recently I was taught the technique to making real bbq at home, I rarely go out for BBQ anymore. It takes like 6-7 hrs but damn is it good. I suggest the 3 pack of ribs from Costco. They are cut so thick, its like a pork chop on each rib. and $30 for 3 slabs is the best Ive found.
..off on a tangent

JJDelli in Herndon at the Golf Course is the best real BBQ in the area hands down. Takes his time and does the meat right...doesn't just add liquid smoke or try to BS you.

I think it depends on what you expect for BBQ. When I order a pulled pork sandwich, I don't expect to get a pile of dry meat and have to pour Carolina BBQ sauce on it. I want it stewed for hours in the stuff so it is tangy and hot throughout. The ribs, on the other hand, are prepared fairly well.

Carolina Brothers in Ashburn is the best Carolina style BBQ around. If you want to put a bunch of sauce on it go ahead but the pulled pork speaks for itself.

RH&B is fuckin' nasty. It's also incredibly expensive. If you're gonna eat at a chain, Famous Dave's beats it all to hell any day. Famous Dave's also beats most of the strictly local restaurants, too. But that's not saying much.

Rocklands, while not in FFX Co., is the best BBQ you can find in the area. I've never been to the Alexandria or DC locations, but the one in Arlington is amazing.

Willards is very hit or miss. Sometimes it's great, and sometimes the food is completely tasteless. Worth trying, though.

Also, there's a place way down Rt. 29 past Gainesville. It's just a trailor on the side of the road. It's decent, but also very expensive.

REStonPeace and I tried Bluez Brothers. The sides were pretty good, but the pulled chicken sandwiches were pretty bland... not much flavor in the chicken and the sauce wasn't anything special.

I still think Willard's has good pulled chicken but with mediocre sides. Overall, my vote is for BBQ Country in Vienna.

I went there last Sunday for lunch and didn't really like it. I ordered one of their specials, a sandwich and two sides for like 7 bucks (good price). The pulled chicken sandwich was akin to something I could heat up in my microwave, and the sides (cole slaw and mac&cheese) were just OK. Despite the 90 degree temps they did not have the AC turned on, and instead just left the front door wide open (I had a similar experience at Born Restaurant the week before, right down the street in Vienna, is this a new trend?). Anyway, I wasn't pleased. Maybe I ordered the wrong stuff?

What's the good stuff on the menu? I'd go back if I had a credible recommendation.

That little joint on Route 29 outside of Gainsville did serve up really nice BBQ. Stopped there on my way back to C'ville to try it out. It's called "Smokin' Joes" or something like that. It's just a trailer on the side of the road, parked in a lot next to the Amish Buildings/Play Equipment place.

I just Google Mapped it and it's at 5286 Lee Highway, Warrenton. That's the address, not Gainesville. Worth a trip to try it at least. It's a little BBQ shack on wheels, but we liked the BBQ. The beef brisket sandwich was really good.

They're closed on Monday's BTW.
