Undercover Cops Bust Mayor in Meth-for-Sex Scheme

The mayor of Fairfax City, Virginia, was arrested early Friday after police say he tried to give methamphetamine to undercover detectives in exchange for sex.

Mayor Richard "Scott" Silverthorne, 50, was nabbed in the parking lot of a Crowne Plaza Hotel as part of a sting operation, the Fairfax County Police
Department said in a news release. He was charged with felony distribution of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Why is something like this required? He should be fired and jailed. I don't get it. Yes, he was elected, but the governor should be able to say "you're fired!"

The petition is needed for him to resign. He will get the charge dropped to misdemeanor and stay on as mayor. We need a city recall or special election to get a new mayor. Pretty sad.

The charge probably will end up a misdemeanor, depending opn how much meth was involved and who actually possessed it. Sounds like he was not really a distributor, rather a closeted gay guy seeking hook-ups, - which is not a crime. It also sounds like it was not him, but one of the other guys who actually brought the meth over to the motel - again, not so much to sell as a dealer but for a group of gay guys to use together. Sounds like Silverthorne and the other guys did this regularly, but not for sale, just for recreational use as part of their gay activities (which are not a crime however you feel about it). Possession is a crime and he will plead or be found guilty of something - and as first offender he may well get off without jail and instead get probation with conditions including entering a treatment program. But I think it will be hard for a judge or jury to find he was "intending to distribute" i the usual and customary english language meaning of that phrase.
