Lively Debate On The Meals Tax

Apart from 2 restaurants, not even in Fairfax, it seems the only support comes from the schools. As might be expected, the schools are having trouble answering questions about their spending practices.

In addition, the school contingent has been backed into a corner on the issue of whether or not the proposed meals tax places an unfair burden on the elderly and disabled.

I have said it countless times that EVERYONE would be willing to provide more funds if they closely examined their budget on a line by line basis. They refuse. Ask Elizabeth Shultz.

There WAS a lively debate until the anti-meals tax comments were removed.

The funds from the proposed meals tax will be used to fund things like the transgender initiative and to hire more administrators and consultants.

The County has NO plans for tax relief if the meals tax is passed.

The proposed meals tax targets the elderly and disabled.

Vote NO on the meals tax on November 8.

Targets the elderly and disabled - ??? Care to explain what you mean? I can't think of groups any LESS affected by this tax. You think the elderly and disabled eat out a lot, or consume a lot of prepared meals?

They do. Other than at the extremes of poverty/age, the percentage of meals away from home are about equal across all demmographic groups now at about half or a little less of total annual food expenditures. But what it's relating more generally is the regressive nature for anyone in lower- and fixed-income groups.

In addition, many elderly/disabled are exempt from property tax. This meals tax puts a burden on them they do not face now. Their limited, fixed incomes are put under more stress if they want to eat out or buy prepared food items. For many senior citizens, an occasional night out is one of their few luxuries.

What is fair here is an exemption from this tax for those already exempt from property tax.

Opponents of the meals tax are chiefly ignorant assfucks who hate all taxation and wish to see all social enterprise fail. Schools, parks, roads, libraries, rec centers, senior centers, transit systems -- you name it, and these assfucks hate it. They truly are the worst people in the world.

Proponents of the meals tax are chiefly ignorant Assholes... who love all taxation and wish to see government enterprise expand for its own sake regardless of need, cost, waste, effectiveness, or success. Schools, parks, roads, libraries, rec centers, senior centers, transit systems -- you name it, and these Assholes... will use them as pretexts for increasing taxes. Whatever the question of taxes arises, the answer will always be "more." They truly are the worst people in the world.

It is a travesty that 70% of the revenues of the meals tax are pre-allocated to the schools.

Fairfax' libraries (which might just be used by students) are falling apart. I returned a book, the library said I did not return it, it was on the shelf. Their check in system is antiquated.

Maybe some of the meals tax money could be used to fix this? No, sorry. The school administrators and board members need to eat out and travel more. FCPS needs to hire some more administrators with online Ed.D. degrees. FCPS needs to hire more consultants, some with online degrees in human development, some who are repurposed marriage counselors.

The kids, well, kids just get in the way of those trips to New Orleans and Nashville.
