Let the Accidents Begin - 4 Lane Lawyers Rd Shrunk to One Lane
Posted by: Cluster F ()

Well leave it to the county to shrink a four lane road to one lane. Yes, that's correct, Lawyers road was four lanes and is now one lane permanant.

The idea is to slow down traffic and make the road safer. There is one wide lane with a small shoulder and now a middle turn lane in place of the 2 and 3 lanes.

That wokrs great if you are making a left turn because then you have lane to turn in in, but if you are making a right turn then be prepared to get rear ended by a car going 45 mph without a lane to pass in.

This is a complete cluster fuck!

They shrunk a 4-lane road to three vehicle lanes and two bike lanes. Saying it went from four to one is dumb.

Bicycler + Lives on Lawyers Rd + Works for VDOT = New bicycle lane on Lawyers Rd.

Personally I wouldn't be caught dead cycling 1 foot from cars going 45mph or let any kids use that bicycle lane. Also that 2 mile strech of Lawyers road has a bad turn that high school kids love to challenge. The turn grade slopes out so many of them end up in the woods or cement ditch flipped over. Wait until some high school kid takes that newly slick smooth turn being forced to stay in the outside lane... hello car in house!

"VDOT has identified a no-cost approach to reduce vehicle crashes and improve safety on Lawyers Road, while also giving cyclists additional travel options," says Fairfax County Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill). "It's a win-win for all."

"This is one of the first opportunities we have had in northern Virginia to do this," says McCord.

Once again an elected official who knows what's best for her constitents. How often does Cathy drive this road? Has she spoken to any of us who drive it daily?

This is not a "win-win" for anyone!!!!

Really, there can't be any more accidents on this road than there already were. Get over the drama. This just gives the type A's something to complain about and gives them a reason to tailgate the rest of us. If your in that much of a hurry get on 267 where the limit is 55.

You have, well had, a better chance of doing 55 on Lawyers Rd. than you do on 267.

Supervisor Hudgins had a meeting this spring at Langston Hughes on this issue. Though I disagree with the decision, the case in favor was reasonable saying it will reduce rear-ending accidents of folks making left turns from the passing lane of which there have been no more than 8 in the last 2 years.

The bike advocates were very happy with the bike lanes.

My opposition is based on the experience of too many highway authorities that turn lanes on the centerline of a highway become "suicide lanes" as the impatient use them to pass slower traffic and crash head-on/rear-end into folks properly using the lane to make left turns.

We'll see.

Rt 28 thru manassas had a similar original configuration between Liberia and Business 234: 2 thru lanes and a 3 foot paved section seperating the oncoming traffic. They fixed it properly tho and made a center turn lane by relocating the sidewalk so there are 5 total lanes and 2 sidewalks. That of course costs a few bucks and Fairfax is cheap

I guess the paint was free and they're going to use prisoners to paint the new lane markings?

Shit, even that still has costs. The fuel for all the vehicles to get the supplies and workers to the site, all the signs redirecting traffic during the work, etc.

Is it the politicians or the people who believe them who are stupid? "no cost approach" sounds great when they're giving a speech in front of a bunch of local reporters, but it doesn't make any fucking sense.

It means that it will not cost any more than the previously planned resurfacing and painting. Alas, politician-speak leaves much to be desired...

The stretch between Hunter Mill and Reston Parkway.

I hope I'm right, I haven't been down that stretch in over 15 years, but if I recall, that is the only part of Lawyers with 4 lanes.

I get what you're saying, but no, it shouldn't mean that.

no cost should mean that there are NO COSTS. Once there's a cost involved, shifting the plan to another plan doesn't make it "no cost". It just makes it "zero sum" from the previous plan.

But I suppose these politician folks realize that they have to speak in the lowest common denominator terms to what they believe (and I'm beginning to agree) is a very stupid voting population.

Be careful, there's a troll threatening to call the police on you.

Let's mastermind a plot to kill that troll. That should really get the cops all worked up and ready to muster a raiding party on our homes to seize our computers and arrest us.

Only part of it was 4-lane. Roughly half of that stretch on the Reston Pkwy end.

West of Twin Branches is 4 lane at one point (near Glade?). Between Twin Branches and Hunter Mill it is certainly 1 lane each way.

There are black tire marks all over this section of lawyer today. Looks like a couple of accidents. One looks like the car spun around a couple of times then went into the woods.

Probably some moron who didn't pull in to the turn lane to make a turn. Either a fresh crop of asian drivers have started taking the "new" Lawyers or people are just complete idiots. The turn lane is for you dummies to pull into to make a turn. Stop making your turns from the on-going "moving" traffic lane. sheeezz

Today they are painting little bicycle pictures on the bike lanes. Tomorrow they are painting little car, truck and motorcycle pictures on the car lanes. This will clear everything up for all.

Everyone knows that the insensitive government doesn't build bike paths to the same specifications as car paths. Bike paths have like, 2 to 3 times more road-vibration-related micro-impacts than standard roads. If you don't believe me, try riding your bike on the bike path for 7 hours, and the car path for 7 hours, and see which one leaves you more fatigued at the end.

Why not just leave the road the way it was then? Cyclists are still going to use the car path, so why not leave more room for the cars to pass them?

The extra space made when they converted a 4-lane road into a 3-lane road, resulting in half a car-lane width on each side for the bike path.

I got tired of cars not sharing the road with me when I'm biking so I came up with a different strategy. I bought a used white Ford Escort and put stickers from different companies on it and a yellow flashing light on top. My girlfriend drives the "team car" when I'm biking. I pick the route I want to go and she just drives behind me with the yellow light flashing pretty much giving me my own lane on any road I want. We even got one of those headset radios so I can tell her when I'm hungry or thirsty. I'm not very fast but this way I feel like I'm leading the race and I never have to worry about cars coming up behind me. Sometimes I even ride on I-66.

I call bullshit on this one. It's illegal to ride a bicycle on an interstate highway, and I'm sure VA State Police would inform you of that very quickly.

UM... the Amish keep to themselves, and restrict their buggy activities to the most minimal possible road use at all times, during which time, they are as safe as they can be. They are friendly, courteous, and do not cause problems or arguments with pretentious demands. They understand there is an evolving world around them, and they TRY to keep their niche and still not get in anyone's way when they do. You can't stay out of the way all the time, but they try.

Comparing the degenerates this thread is about to the wonderful Amish people is a serious insult to the Amish.

I'm sure you are referring to those whining, jealous, sorry, no-account, Tostitos-addled, pimple-popping and pig-squealing fat-boys who complain about cyclists.

By virtue of the fact that we cyclists help the environment, exercise, reduce automobile traffic congestion, and generally serve as good civic examples, we cannot be degenerates.

10 mph actually worsens gas consumption. Optimal engine performance is in 4th or 5th gear at 45 to 60 miles an hour.

Your argument is fallacious.

Actually, it's true. If I got out and pushed my car around town all day while it was turned off. It would get several miles for no gallons of gas consumed! It sure would be slow, but that's what it takes to make our earth a greener place.

Engine performance is not the only factor influencing fuel consumption, the bigger factor is air-resistance. Air-resistance is many times higher at 45-60 mph than at 10 mph. 10mph in 2nd gear can roughly equate to 45 mph in 4th or 5th gear in terms of rpm's, with regard to engine performance. One just need look at the tachometer. The engine doesn't know how fast the car is going - mph, it only knows how fast IT is going - rpm's.

Your argument based on engine performance fails.

Yah, just tun the engine off and let momentum or gravitational pull take effect.

Never said anything like that. I don't know what their original reason or motivation was. Simply describing how the extra space came to be.

OTOH, why is it so inplausible? I serious doubt that making bike paths had anything to do with their reason for getting rid of the 4-lane configuration.

You're missing the point, SBS. An engine's performance is not the same as an automobile's performance. Obviously a transmission will enable an automobile to travel some distance while the engine is running.

I'll accept being corrected on the relationship of speed and mpg under optimal driving conditions to allow a bell-curve that peaks at roughly 40mph, according to the graph on the previous page. It appears that this study computes the effects of wind resistance not having a signifant effect until roughly 50 mph - which is debatable. However, the point of pushing a car with the motor turned off is not lost, either. No fuel is consumed.

Regardless, the bike lanes on Lawyers Road are a good idea.

See? I pointed out in the other thread that cyclists believe they have the right to be smug pricks because they're like, totally helping compared to people in cars.

Of course, this particular brand of "aid" can only be administered while wearing a bright blue, white, and yellow spandex bike suit. Of course, don't forget the pointy bicycle helmet, scientifically engineered to be super aerodynamic and ugly as fuck.

Watch out for those micro-impacts, bro! They'll totally kill your performance on Lawyers Road after 7 hours.

Why don't you just come out and say that you think cars would run better, faster, and cleaner if they were encased in faggoty spandex? I bet it's the road vibration that causes poor gas mileage.

There's nothing debatable about it. Effects of wind resistance were not computed in the curve at all. It's simple MPG measurement at various speeds. There are numerous factors that create resistance to a car's motion other than air resistance. Air resistance is not a major factor relative to some of the others until speed is substantially higher than 10 mph.

Do you think momentum is a contributing factor to increased mpg up to 40 mph?

I see that you're so unoriginal, you have to refer to the Barney Frank book of insults.

Trying to have a conversation with you would be like trying to tell a cyclist that their faggoty spandex doesn't really do anything, much like a spoiler on the back of a '98 Honda Civic. However, I have an interest in doing so, because you're a retard and I'm not.

Correction, at first glance, I would have to guess that the net effect of momentum on mileage would be negative. Since momentum is directly proportional to the vehicle's weight, and all else being equal, a lighter vehicle will get better mileage.

A less massive vehicle will have less momentum, thus travel a shorter distance, making less mileage. Smaller vehicles require much less power to reach the same speeds though.

Further proof of the dickness of cyclists. I'll type slow and in BIG LETTERS so you understand the basic tenets of commom courtesy.

When there are A LOT OF PEOPLE on the SIDEWALK and the STREET is EMPTY, then it's better to ride on the street.

When there is A LOT OF TRAFFIC in the STREET and the SIDEWALKS are EMPTY, then it's better to ride on the sidewalk.

Of course, cyclists think they're entitled to do whatever they want as long as they do it in a spandex suit, so it's no surprise that they need signs to guide them on how to be considerate to others. I find it hard to believe that they aren't seeing the sign, since cyclists are usually so self absorbed that they'd be proud to point out, "That sign's about me! I'm awesome! I totally made an impact on my community!"

And yes, I stumbled across this article when I was browsing the SF Chronicle for gay sex opportunities. In San Francisco. While I live in NOVA. Because my dick is that long.

Edit: Forgot to capitalize some stuff; in re-reading it, I wasn't sure it was clear enough.

I agree. "Passing on the left!" Thanks! You know, normally I like to walk zig zag all over the path, but since you warned me, I'll continue in a straight line! Thanks for sparing me my life!

Now learn that the same rule applies when driving. Move your slow ass Prius over to the right, so people going the appropriate speed can pass on the left.

Interesting point. When you're on the WOD, they'll scream at you because you don't move to the right far enough or quick enough for their road race.

At the same time, they say they're entitled to bike 10 mph down the center of a road - tying up traffic and making a general nuisance. But they're conserving energy.

New resident. Employee interaction, Provided a " Back Way" to circumnavigate traffic. Wonderfull ride AND scenic. Bike path fatal. Seasoned route takers more stressed, which is what "WE" were trying to get away from!!!!!!, Bike lane ends @ the merge to 2 lane traffic requiring a daredevil attitude or cutting across on Soapstone, again, crossing traffic. Who paid for this? I would have to believe YOU! Who does it benefit?, **answer here** YOU TELL ME!!!
