UFCW Opposes Fairfax Meals Tax
Posted by: UFCW 400 ()

Management and labor have come together in their opposition to the meals tax.

On November 8th, supermarket owners and the UFCW will cover worker expenses to and vote against this tax.

The tax, which would cover items such as rotisseries chickens and chilled soft drinks, will erode market profits and result in hour and job loss for employees.

As a result, they have united to do something about it.

Even though the importance of the schools is recognized, so too is the waste and lack of community engagement.

Blah-blah-blah. Nothing remotely resembling the scary stories told by meals tax opponents has EVER happened in any of the dozens and dozens of Virginia jurisdictions that have a meals tax. It's all a bunch of pointless made-up baloney-babble.

Meanwhile the county as it continues to grow needs both more revenue and a more diverse revenue base. Piling such a large portion of the burden directly onto local property owners is not good tax policy and it's not good social policy. Thanks to the dimbulbs in Richmond however, we don't have a whole lot of choices. We can raise about $100 million a year out of a meals tax, or we can just raise the real estate tax rate another 5 cents per hundred dollars worth of valution. Pick your poison. There just aren't many options available beyond those two,

One only needs to drive througg Vienna to see the impact of a Meals Tax.

How is a place that is nothing but mattress stores and whose only culinary distinction is the Vienna Inn is a "successful example" of a Meals Tax?

Has anything scary happened to places that didn't succeed at implementing a meals tax? Are the schools going to shut down? People that are in support of raising taxes could just start cutting a check to Fairfax County now. Go have a fundraiser to donate money to the county. If you're so impassioned to give money and solve the problem and don't want to cut anything or actual spend more than 5 minutes before giving up.. go have a bake sale, garage sale, ask for donations, become a prostitute. I am sure if all the people that are in favor of these tax increases worked hard they could get more than enough money to cover financial mismanagement for years to come!

The other meals taxes were put in place quite some time now. There is no data, really, to support the argument that they have had no negative effects. What we do have is this: concerns that the County/schools waste money and that the tax would impede business growth and hurt employment. Can you address those concerns with respect to Fairfax?

"Meanwhile the county as it continues to grow needs both more revenue and a more diverse revenue base."

Actually, if it grows, tax revenue grows proportionally. No need to tax, tax, and tax more.

Given a choice of eating out less so FCPS can spend more, or eating out the same and making FCPS watch their spending, I'd rather keep my money, thank you.

Instead of increasing financial burden on taxpayers, how about spending less.

As a hard working person, I don't have the option of spending more than I make. I can't just make up a tax and take money from others. I need to live within my budget. The Fairfax government needs to do the same, or we need to elect those who will.

Hey, is anyone from FCPS going to stand up and explain what we residents got for the $43 grand Eric Jensen was paid to give music lectures?

Are you ever going to shut the fuck up with your worse than stupid obsession with some series of music lectures? Stop being such a pathetic giant asshole already! Bringing in a variety of outside speakers is the habit of school systems all across the country. Nobody is ever going to ask for YOUR permission, and nobody is ever going to care what YOU might think about any of them, so SHUT THE FUCK UP, you worthless piece of shit!

Seriously, this was supposed to be another dumb thread about the meals tax. Turning it into another even dumber thread about Eric "Who?" Jensen is definitely the work of an asshole.

We do need the meals tax, by the way.

Good for the stores and union. The meals tax is just another source of funds to be pissed away. How much is the transgender expert going to cost, probably more than that other guy, he was just the organ player in Steppenwolf.

Why not? That's how it's always been to date. You were perfectly happy with saying that they should be higher to fund these same requirements before the meals tax proposal(s) were floated.

The ONLY reason for the meals tax discussion is political resistance re property taxes, NOT any real tax policy basis.

supermarket owners/managers and union employees see meals tax writing on the wall and it is obscene. They are doing the right thing to make an investment in time off to vote against it.
