Did the "Do Not Call" list go bye bye?
Posted by: Stop Calling Me!!!!!!!!! ()
Date: July 24, 2016 02:08PM

I've had all my phone numbers on the Do Not Call list since it became available a few years ago. However in the last 2-3 months the block seems to no longer be working. I am getting phone solicitations daily and sometimes as many as 6 a day.

What happened? Did this service go away or expire or something? Can we blame this on Obama?

The national telemarketers foundation purchased the no-call list from the FCC for $8.5 million!

Please do tell why it's a scam. A free service that takes a minute to set up. Who benefits from this scam? Certainly not the telcos, telemarketers or government.

This is true. If you are on the list, you get most of the calls.

Standard democratic tactics. Pretend they are helping while enriching themselves and selling out those they claim to be helping.

I waste their time. Car warrany people, I tell them I have a 1960 Corvette. Credit card interest, I give them the card info slightly scrambled. Won a free cruise, I ask them a lot of questions about the availability of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.

If they ask for someone by name say "God, I'm so sorry, I got that person's number, I've also had calls from the funeral home. It seems they were killed while attempting an armed robbery, and no one paid for the funeral"

Eventually your number gets marked as a nut and they stop calling.

What "info?" Your phone number? The numbers of phone spammers who try to call you? WTF cares about that "info?"

Sorry, it's not a "scam." Rather than ignorantly declaring it to be one you might actually read some of the many independent assessments of the service.

Same here. I'd pay good money for this service, if they charged, which they don't. I was getting up to ten junk calls a day, now I get one (some horrible credit card ripoff).

No, Herbie, it is NOT true. You are merely being a completely useless and illiterate assfuck once again. Charities, political groups, bill collectors, and phone survey companies have NEVER been covered by the Do Not Call list. The list only covers telemarketers -- organizations seeking to sell goods and services using INTERSTATE phone calls. Calls that are both from and to a phone in Virginia are not covered.

But consumers can ask ANY caller to put their number on the company's own Do Not Call list. By law, companies must accept and respect such requests if they are specifically and unambiguously made. Violators should be reported to the FCC (1-888-382-1222) which can and does go after confirmed repeat scofflaws with a stick.

NoMoRobo is for real alright, It was one of the winners of a contest run by the FTC to come up with ways to deal with phone abusers. It intercepts calls before they reach your phone and compares the originating number to blacklists of evil-doer numbers. It can see through caller-ID spoofs and find the actual originating number. Calls that pass muster go through and your phone rings. The rest are vaporized. It would probably be helpful for some.

It doesn't really 'intercept' calls. It works just like multi-forwarding your number to any other number(s). It only answers those calls that it sees as spam. When it picks up on its end, it no longer rings on your end. That's why you get the one ring.

It was a good, simple idea that the guy had. He deserved to win.

Right. Like some fucker that's using the list to spam call you is going to put you on the DNC list. Ask anyone here...when asking that, how many times they've simply been hung up on and then get even more calls. That gov't stick does not exist. Cite the law all you want ya worthless prick...your phone will keep ringing.

Mostly what it does for those ignoring the list is to confirm a working number with a real person behind it.

DNC list is pretty useless, because of two things:
1) VoIP
2) CallerID spoofing

These make it trivial for any spammer/scammer to set up a shop that will show with a bogus number. Lately I've noticed a number of spam callers that appear to be in our area code and NXX (e.g., if our number is 703-555-1212, the calls show up as 703-555-xxxx, where the xxxx varies, or *even* as our exact number). I assume the idea there is that we're more likely to say "Hey, that's a local call, maybe it's a neighbor" (though showing our number is just stupid).

I can only imagine that the folks who designed SS7 and ClID are kicking themselves over making spoofable. That kind of made sense originally: if you're calling from BigCorp, it makes sense for the switch to spoof the number to BigCorp's main number, rather than some random line that won't actually ring anywhere. And it's not clear that with VoIP, non-spoofable ClID would even help: it would just show the number of the line where the VoIP call entered the real phone system.

Not PP, but let me try here... Your first paragraph is fine. The second, not so much. PP does not understand the terms VoIP, ClID, and SS7 - and how they fit in with spoofing. I'd tell him, but I don't know either.

No it's not. Verizon Fios brought it to our attention to use. Comcast and Time Warner customers have been using it for years before Verizon introduced it to theirs.

This has nothing to do with whichever party is in power. Those telemarketers are offshore, using automated dialers. Nuking some country over telemarketing just might be considered an overreaction (although there are sure times I've been irritated enough that it briefly *seemed* like a good idea!).

note the (cell phone) company charges for calls (ie, ANONYMOUS no-phone recorded ads)

it's called phone slamming and a felony if (say malaysia who services the phones) is doing it

it could be high-tech harassment, unlikely

it could be police

someone (ie, county gov worker) could have put your name on a watch list == (everyone but rich political kids == watch list

it says on your cell agreement you accept an allow anonymous rings to your phone for the purpose of pinging your location to POLICE - who use it at theri disposal

it could be high tech harassment of that nature - the "everyones a target of gov for a takedown" facist state type of harassment. your name gets on a computer list never gets taken off merely because your not in a political family and are destined according to them to be run over by one

what we didn't discuss is "it's a mistake"

it absolutely was not - and the motive absolute IS GREED - there is a felony going on you (I) just do not know who the PERP is

Assumes a woman calling a man but you get the idea

(ring ring)

You: hello?

Them: hi, this is Rachel from card services, I'd like to offer you a better interest rate.

You: What do you look like?

Them: What?

You: Yes, I'm partial to busty blondes. I thought we might discuss this over dinner, so what do you look like.

Them: Sir, this is a business call!

You: Baby, I'm all business!

Them: Let's get back to the interest rate.

You: I told you, I'm only interested in busty blondes.

Them: Sir, I won't have you speaking to me this way. I must terminate this call.

You: Hey, you called me!

Yes, it takes a little time, but the list of "weirdos" or "timewasters" gets passed around.

One guy called me trying to sell a week at a timeshare. I asked how good they were at cleaning up bloodstains. He wanted to know why, I told him the coven got kicked out of the last place where we did a sacrifice. He told me that was against the rules. I told him I'd only do a timeshare suitable for a blood sacrifice. I asked him if anyone had ever talked to him about Satan, the lord and master of the world. He hung up.

I've not had one of these calls in YEARS.

One time some jack ass selling timeshares called me. I answered the phone and as he started in with his pitch, I laid the phone down on the kitchen counter and went up stairs and took about a 15 minute violent dump. He might have even heard me groaning.

Went back, picked up the phone and this fucktard was still just babbling away like I had been there the whole time listening.
