Fatal Crash in Great Falls
Date: July 20, 2016 08:13PM

Had the misfortune to drive up shortly after it happened. Horrifying one car crash - once again reminded about driving like a sane person in the backwoods parts of the county.

He crashed very close to Georgetown Pike. I have no idea how you can get so much speed up so quickly.

He wasn't that close to Georgetown Pike, it was close to Arnon Chapel rd and he lost it on a straight part, so he could have been easily been going 80+.

The addicent clearly was not weather related and it was not dark out a the time.

As I typically say, things like this rarely happen if someone is not exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 MPH. Who knows about impairment.

Sad either way, someone has lost a family member that clearly was driving very stupidly.

It's not sad. It's a good thing this reckless fucktard has been eliminated before killing some other innocent driver.

How many assholes do you see every day driving like a complete dick on our local roadways?

Well, today the roads are just a tad safer.

People who act like reckless operation of a 3,000 pound vehicle is some kind of fucking game are killing people every week in this area.

Three deductions:

1. Had a medical issue, causing him to crash (e.g., a heart-attack);

2. Was looking at his phone;

3. Was driving recklessly (speeding).

I've driven that road hundreds of times. Given his age, I think the driver was either staring at his phone, or was speeding. Otherwise, it's an easy road to travel along.

1. I doubt it was a medical condition, rarely does a medical condition cause you to crash the car in such a way you are ejected the car ends up on top of you.

2. Most people his age are pretty versed at looking at a phone while driving. Again, looking at your phone, drive within 10 MPH of the posted speed limit, you are not likely going to crash with so much force you are ejected, assuming you are wearing a seat belt, and have the car roll on top of you.

3. Driving recklessly (speed) is the most likely situation. You can usually drive 20-30 MPH over the posted speed limit with a fair amount of vehicle control if you are not impaired and you are paying attention. While this is NOT a good idea, you see this happen often where people drive 55 MPH in residential areas.

Seems that #3 is the winner, probably driving more than 30 MPH over the limit and there was some mention that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Not sure how many people are driving around at 3 pm on a Wednesday under the influence, if they are, they probably do not work and more than likely have a substance abuse problem.

Kind of interesting if you actually work for a living, do the things most people do, like drive the speed limit, pay attention, do not take drugs or drink and drive, you usually will live to see another day.

Tragic for the family, glad nobody else was hurt, it could have been a very different situation if a passenger or another vehicle was involved.

Hey Poppychoolo - driving recklessly is the definitive symptom of being an asshole. Losing a life is the obvious consequence - unfortunately, most times reckless driving ends with an innocent losing their life as well. Even pigs have more consideration for their fellow travelers than reckless drivers. The "shame, shame, shame" is on those who accept, condone, excuse or drive recklessly and endanger. We need more people to speak up, act up and rid the community of these dangerous drivers.

Too bad god continues to create assholes... maybe s/he is looking to us to act in our own interests and confront and eliminate them on our own!

I've been on that road hundreds of times also. Posted speed limit is 35mph, usually people are going between 40-50mph. Anything above that is pretty dangerous.

I'm a deeply negative person, but looking at all the family members they seem to be a very loving family. However, the kid has pics posted from 17-18 years old drunk. Call me old fashioned, but as a heavy partier I didn't have the means or the time or resources to do so and if my kid posted this on social media his ass would be kicked up and down the block. Yes yes teenagers drink. But death does not discriminate and anyone who texts and drives or drinks and drives should have a couple fingers cut off. Small price for the pain you cause your family or the lives you can extinguish.

When you are behind the wheel you have one job. I used to think VA laws were way too strict. But growing up here i now understand there's a reason for it-- first time offenders get a second or third DUI and still don't learn. If i got one DUI I'd be in church and deeply ashamed. I'm not for big government at all, but these fools behind the wheel, I'd vote yes for a vehicle that detected alcohol and it would go on lock down. These idiots that are distracted or drunk (not including the subject which we have no info on) ruin it for us all. Kids will be kids... he was 24 but in Millennial terms..that's 16-18 years old in mental maturity in terms of consequences for the special snowflakes.

I am absolutely horrified by some of the comments on this post. How are you so quick to negatively judge a young man who has just lost his life. There are few details this early on and you are so quick to say oh better for us this asshole is off the road?? you're the type of people we don't need on this earth. All human lives are precious. I know this family and they are the most genuine and friendly people. Davey was kind to everyone he ever met and the furthest thing from an asshole. I hope to god his family never sees some of the things you random people have said about him.

Snowflake on a pedestal. Would your pedestal be so high if he had killed one of your kids driving drunk at 3 in the afternoon hauling ass down a curvy road? Oh, it's ok though sweetie...he didn't mean to do it. That brings your child back.

HSYPAFU is asserting that "human lives are precious" and that this driver, who appears to have indulged in reckless behavior is "not an asshole". But reckless driving put other human lives (innocent and presumably precious) in danger - so he is an asshole. Compassion is "pity or concern for suffering or misfortune" - the reckless driver didn't suffer - he was apparently drunk or distracted and snuffed as he smashed his head through the windscreen. As to misfortune; well it appears that his own actions led to his contact with the tree... rather than misfortunate it was the foreseeable outcome resulting from his decision. The fortune was that no one else was involved.

My friend lost his 7 yr old daughter to a reckless teen driver who ran her down in an intersection as she walked to school because he "had to make the light". Reckless driving kills innocent people. This driver's an asshole for putting others at risk. Had he continued to practice risky and reckless driving it is likely that he would have injured or killed someone. Let god decide - 'till then he's an asshole - a dead one - which is the only good kind...

Although I was initially impressed with Orange Line Ranger's posting of their home address it was quickly extinguished when he/she threw out "faggot." I'm a straight female and faggot is just about as lame as the troll posts on here. It does not reflect well on your friend who lost his life, giving the impression he's surrounded by elitist bigots.

I wouldn't be so sure a poster or a viewer wouldn't show up, harass you or the property owner (or parents), their place of work, vandalism and so forth. Anyone with any tact would google the lawsuits and harassment stemming from this site and take that into consideration. It only highlights a typical Millennial's lack of critical thinking, projection of consequences and self-control so that one backfired on you. Speaking of the texting generation they sure do get worked up about strangers making comments and feeding into the comments. . If you don't mind getting down in the dirt, harassment and such then carry on. It's a free country and the point of Fairfax Underground is that you take all speech so we can have one of the last truly open forums left in the DC area.

As far as posting positive, specific commentary on your friend's character then that's probably the best fight to honor his memory if that is really what you wish to do rather than trying to prove a point for your own ego and pride. Internet trolls are not going to go away. If I died in this manner and Fairfax Underground made me a subject I'd be laughing my ass off on the other side and I hope all my family and friends would come on here, ignore the basement dwellers (although really let's take some responsibility here for what transpired as reckless on the road), and inundate the thread with positive stories and messages.

But Orange Line Ranger you chose to be lazy and a bigot, highlighting your lack of thoughtfulness. Unfortunately debate and diplomacy are dying art forms. If you are really being unselfish and wish to defend your friend who probably doesn't need defending then perhaps stop trying to "win" and do the right thing.

The family does look very nice. The other side of me says I'm very glad no one else was killed or hurt, needing lifelong medical care and suffering for the rest of their days.

Let's assume I know how to use Google Define: compassion. I am referring to compassion for the family, friends and loved ones of David Alison.

If you think one decision defines the character of a person, good luck with the rest of your judgmental life.

good point - I have compassion for those who cared about him and lost him. This is an opportunity for his death to accrue some additional meaning by highlighting the danger and consequences of reckless driving. He threatened others with apparent disregard for his own or their safety - I won't dither with you over whether this is one "asshole" action in an otherwise honorable life - don't know. But this behavior is often accepted without sufficient comment, opprobrium or shame from family and friends. It's not judgemental to point that out and encourage more accountability, action and opposition to reckless driving.

So easy to use someone else's property and run and hide, isn't it punk? Hope no one emails the owner on that link. Wouldn't want it to tarnish future applications.

Ignorant? Yep you certainly are.

The cops said "alcohol may have been a factor". For us grown ups...that translates to the fact the he had been drinking - enough to make it obvious to the cops, BEFORE any lab tests etc..., so probably tatered...at 3 in the afternoon on a fucking weekday.

Actually junior, he did hit someone. Himself. And because he only hit himself we are all thankful.

Had he the intelligence or better judgment to wear a seat belt...or not be drunk while hauling ass down a curvy road, he would likely be alive today. Since you are likely in middle school, you have no idea how hard it is to be killed in a VOLVO. Those fucking cars are beyond solid. They are far and away the most rigid cars in the US.

I was going to say that either this kid was not wearing a seat belt or the hit was at a VERY high speed for him to ejected.

The thing is at 24 years old, assuming he has been driving for 7-8 years, he really should have know better. Not like this guy was a new driver.

Makes me absolutely sick to see some of the comments being made about Davey's death. That family and davey are/were the nicest and most kind family I have known. Shame on every single one of you posting nasty things about this accident. A young man lost his life, a mother and father lost a son, and a sister lost her brother. I'm sure if this happened to any of your family members you wouldn't want people saying the things that are being said in this forum.

Sad. Sounds like he wasnt wearing his seat belt. Volvo seatbelts dont usually fail. Hope we find out the cause so we all can learn from this tragic event.

If you have read the news reports and everything here and still don't know the cause...then it will be a mystery to you forever.

If the driver would have been wearing a seat belt and been driving the speed limit, he would still be hear to talk about what happened.

Even drinking would not have been such a problem assuming the seat belt was worn and the speed was within 10 MPH of the limit.

Seems to be a simple Physics problem.

First of all -- you do not know if he had been drinking or not. He could have been coming back to the office after a meeting. Secondly, a family has lost a son - brother. Show some respect!! Until you know that whole story - keep your opinions to yourself.

Passenger ejection is unlikey when wearing a seatbelt. I didnt see it mentioned in the report. I didnt speculate as to the cause I simply commented on the fact that the fact the driver was ejected indicated to me he wasnt wearing a belt.

My heart goes out to the family, tragic loss. I was one of the first to arrive at the scene. Unfortunately, you can't forget what you see. To the seatbelt comments, the driver's area was compromised and a belt may not have helped in this case.

Yep, seeing those beer bottles scattered all over, together with the Ready for Hillary bumper sticker would be horrifying.

Again an unfortunate situation, BUT, if the driver's area was compromised to the degree the driver would have been ejected if wearing a seatbelt, chances are the driver would not have survived anyway.

The other thing, the events seem to indicate that the car was traveling probably close to 3 times the speed limit.

Sounds like a very high speed crash if the driver's compartment was significantly compromised on a Volvo.

Even in the vast majority of rollovers on the highway these days - where drivers are belted, injuries are minor and they are often found gabbing on the phone when responders arrive.

Seat belts save lives!

They have been installed in cars since 1968, need to use them.

Anyone reading this forum and taking this shit too seriously is playing the fool.

It is a free-speech forum, yes people are assholes but most the people saying cruel things are just trying to be "shocking".

Again, anyone who allows trolls to rile them up (on either side) is playing the fool.

Just wondering when they may indicate if speed was a factor in the crash?

Just do not understand how traveling 25-35 MPH would have this outcome.

Anyone have pics of the vehicle or scene? That may help determine speed.

40 MPH into a tree is not good, but you have to ASSUME the driver attempted to brake and slowed down before leaving the roadway.

But to eject the occupant, overturn the vehicle and cause a fire does not sound like 40 MPH or less to me.

The accident reconstruction team will be able to determine speed, but the automobile manufacturer will also have crash data to help determine the speed if necessary, but with a single vehicle fatality unless the family claims product liability, the manufacturer will not be involved.

Prayers go out to his family and friends. Does not matter how he crashed. He did not injure anyone else, and no one deserves to die that way. That's a dangerous road and I hope that everyone will drive more cautious and there will be no more deaths like this.

Well, the road is certainly a lot safer now that he's gone.

This sums it up.

I did a lot of stupid shi% behind the wheel from 16-24.

I feel empathy for his family.

I drove through Great Falls recently, turned off of rt 7 west, headed past Colvin Mill and drove all the way to Georgetown Pike.

I remember thinking it would be easy for some teenager to get killed around

there.

"so another asshole, or the son of an asshole, was driving like an asshole."
I read this remarkably insensitive comment three times before it dawned on me that people in certain geographic niches of this overtly self-important area feel they can say anything to or about anybody else without any consequences...besides an accurate judgement by the reader that the writer is the very anatomical aperture that he assigns to the victim and the victim's family. The victim's family is beyond generous personally, spiritually, and professionally - I know them well - and the young man who died was just that: a young man...with a future, with a mind, with feelings, and with a loving family he left behind. Yes, he undoubtedly made an error in judgement, one that cost him - and no one else - his life. And his memory is reduced to fourteen words assembled into a crude attempt at smug know-it-allness?
And what is so telling is that the tragedy that struck a family suddenly and irrevocably has inspired the pompous "wisdom" proffered in the incredibly stupid remark I quoted to open this response to it. The family long ago forgave the writer - an indication that at least one group of people involved in this tragedy has the grace and humility to understand that we can't all be, don't have to be, and would rather not be Great Falls Great.
