A new award has been established to honor former Fairfax firefighter and distance runner Nicole Mittendorff who died two months ago. Mittendorff participated in the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon & 6k a number of times, and ran once with her husband Steven.

The first Nicole Mittendorff Award will be presented to the first female firefighter to complete the half marathon course, which now begins at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and ends under the bridge in Old Town Alexandria. Steve Nearman, founder and event director of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon & 6k, said he hopes that firefighters as well as police and EMS personnel from around the metropolitan area will come to the Oct. 2 race to honor Mittendorf.

Let's see if I understand this correctly. She has sex with multiple work mates, at work, breaking her public trust, does so while married to aanother professional who is likely to travel in the same professional circles, breaking both professional trust and her marital trust, and when everything comes to light she commits suicide leaving every one else to pick up the pieces, and she has earned the right to be honoured? For what? I'm not trying to make light of someone who was in despair to the point of such a tragic end, but honoring such a long string of bad decisions seems like an improper thing to do. We need to make better choices as a society. This seems to be a blaring example.

We have to a point in our society where right is wrong, bad is good and one can be a hero for surviving or in her case committing the worse act one can do to themselves.

I feel bad for her loved ones, however. RIP.

Yep. But remember. It was everyone's fault but hers. Those evil male firefighters talking shit about her...and all the bastards on here who wrote poorly of her character. All their fault.

You see in today's world in this country it's the WORST FUCKING THING IN THE WORLD to blame someone for something or attempt to hold anyone accountable for anything.
