Car, Truck, Motorcycle, Domestic, Import, 4x4, AWD, RWD, Diesel, 4 Door, Convertible, Gasoline Powered, Hybrid, Landscaping Trailer, Lawn Tractor, SR-71 Blackbird?

Can you narrow down your requirements?

If your vehicle has four wheel disc brakes, you can save a poop load of money doing the work yourself. A two axle brake job will cost you about $700 to $900.

You can buy the rotors at Advance auto parts or off of Amazon for about $30 each. You'll need four. You can buy nice, good pad for $30 a set. You'll need two sets. You'll need a can of brake cleaner for about $5, an envelope of caliper lube (maybe $2), and that's it. Yes, parts only you're looking at under $200.

You will need a jack and a couple jack stands, and a torque wrench, but you can often rent those from Advance. It's literally as simple as loading the dishwasher.

Auto repair places NEVER turn rotors anymore. They just throw out the old one and put on a new one because new rotors are cheap and doing that saves a ton of time. Watch a bunch of videos on youtube and have a neighbor help you. It's so flipping simple and you can save a pile of money. Really.

OP. Should have stated CAR.

All costs I will avoid Virginia Tire and Auto. Don't have the time or experience myself as many of the repairs would be brakes and front end work....tie rods, control arms, etc.
Suggestions.

Also, do you really need new rotors? How many miles are on your car and are they original? I replace my rotors every 80,000 - 120,000 depending on their condition, most stealerships recommend having them replaced every time you change the pads which is insane.

Replacing brake pads is super easy, if you can change a flat tire you can change brake pads.

BMW of Fairfax will change your pads and rotors, they are affordable and work on any car. I'm sure you need 4 new rotors, pads, and I would probably have all 4 tires changed too. Don't forget to have an alignment done as well. Shouldn't run you more than $3,000~

I paid an ex-mechanic to teach me how to do it. It saved a bunch of money. It was a BMW Mini, so it wasn't that straight forward and still it took 4 hours with a former pro.

Rotors are super cheap, while you are in there might as well.

no. break jobs on cars with cheap pads do not cost as much, and pads for various vehicles are more than $30

no, you dont need a torque wrench

a good OEM repair manual is the cheapest part you'll ever buy

no. only a place that can't afford a machine would do that. dont go to a place that doesnt have a bare few thousand for a rotor turning machine. because they also can only afford to rip you off

take your rotors to the shop and have them turned 2 reasons:

#1 it employes someone local

#2 it's far more green - avoids factory remelting casting fabricating

#3 machined OEM (orig to car) rotors are guaranteed to fit and be slightly thinner which is good becasue caliper seating can become slightly constricted for people who do nothing to care for the underbody (ie, booties): which is most all poeople

#4 after market rotors, because they often lie about compatibility, can and WILL damage your break calipers - costing way more than a dealer brake job (who btw insures the work they do - which is worth something)

a good mechanic will "slap pads" without changing rotors or used after market rotors carfully (using a micrometer to measure - whether replacing or machining) on their own cars - but only if they dont have another choice

you didn't mention a large pair of pliars or caliper spreader - a must

also you didnt mention a micrometer - and you'd only not need that if you took rotors to shop for machining (they'd measure and they really dont have to if "they look thick enough") because since they've "already been running" and becoming thinner, they are likely not "too thick"

you wouldn't even trust the measurement of a new OEM rotor - absolutely not - car manufacturers absolutely will screw you over on rotor thickness - they'll change the specs stop making the original and sell you the wrong rotors way too thick (Jeep did that to me - had to be machines 2x to fit)

allot of it was fixing local fuck-ups

I've taken my car to Herndon Shell to have them install a tail pipe and muffler. Since it was a Sunday, they couldn't get delivery of parts. I went to the Advance Auto on the other side of the toll road (1-2 miles away) and picked up the parts. The whole job was about $340 including the parts.

infact some had they expression "uh oh look at that bolt!!! somebody's been here. look it over they are trying to screw you over."

what they'd do (the f'ed up cars) is do bad work and instead of paying to have it done right they bring it in with a normal complaint. THEN... an uncareful mechanic would find the damage after writing the ticket. after the mechanic sees it the customer (actaully a local shop screwing over the dealership) claims that the dealer broke it!

all the time. every day something like that.

yes but since you took it to mikes tire&auto instead of bmw ...

you got a slow leak on one tire (what a pain) (they are a tight fit rim) and your tire sensors are almost broken being bashed, and your wire harness in the caliper area pulled badly and now will rust

so you got out for $2,000 at a local shop and it will cost you $1500 to fix what they f'ed up later

torque wrench maybe if you know how to use - if you dont you may break off a bolt head "learning how it works". test on not your car.

brake especially suspension work is dangerous

always check by hand TWICE over

never trust a machine of any kind. and anyway checking by hand helps one uncover other kinds of errors

dont do your own suspension work if your a hack just learning - unless you have good advice or someone to check. you know who you are.

True but for a newb, rotors is just a lot more work compared to changing out pads.

So... You googled it and found ...

#1 leave driver window open whenever working on car, door unlocked.

#2 set parking break ( see below )

#3 jack car but put safety jack too - because floor jacks are NOT reliable, sometimes slip off metal or improperly placed, AND because they slowly go down though you dont see it

#4 shake tire 12&6, 3&9, for issues bearing / steering issues (see CHILTONS)

sure lube pins. but be sure the bootie covering the break caliper is clean but dont rip it. if it's ripped replace it. (does not fail inspection but this is something you really want for it's low price it's a must have). DO NOT lube break caliper it should be clean. if rebuilding caliper remember it's nickle plated for lifetime durability (dont clean it with anything that damages nickle plating, dont open it if you dont have a new little rubber seal)

#5 * SPIN TIRE. it should spin freely after a few turns (if not, the rotor is too thick, the brake is not retracting caliper needs cleaning and or rebuild, or break system isn't function right). unfortunately since you set the parking break you can't. so be damn careful. a flat floor and good wheel blocks and good horse sense are a must for that.

#6 when your done make sure the tire spins freely again - if they dont STOP. fix it dont put it off till later. i assume you have another vehicle or yellow cab number handy so you can get parts without pulling teeth.

#7 on your test drive if you hear a knocking sound that sounds like it is from the dash. PULL OVER AND TIGHTEN THE LUGNUTS YOU FORGOT TO TIGHTEN.

break pads are $30 ea. maybe not rotors - esp. not for most cars. but taking them to a shop and having them machined is better for many reasons.

if you can brake at 50 mph and do not feel pulsation you do not need to machine rotors

Yeah, but I prefer to have the caliper bolts and lug nuts properly torqued.

With a calibrated precision torque wrench. Eg SnapOn

It Would suck if the brakes fail.

Just got my brakes done on my mini 2wd pick up, $100 per axle plus my supplied parts. I enjoy spec-ing out my parts. I go with high end version of aftermarket parts, when I choose to go that route. Akebono Pads are the way to go. Don't cheap out on brake parts. Use the money you would have spent on the under carriage led lights on quality brakes. Sure I could have done it myself, but I don't have a car lift, and I prefer to surf the web in my moms basement.

The cheapest part one should buy, is usually the gasket for the oil drain plug.

You seriously have no clue what you are saying.

%100 take it to the dealer

it will cost more but about anything you can find is better and that means less headache or cost in the long run. they have the right manuals, nicer workplaces, parts, easier to argue with, you name it

i have a torque stick for wheels i check it monthly to see it still functions to the right torque - because they only work if they are driven correctly and used correctly

a common problem some shops have is leaving wheels loose due to "trusting the torque stick" but not having their tool set right or not giving it enough time.

alone such things are not enough for head bolts or suspension or what (except - except for lug nuts). you still have to check by hand and have a feel for it to insure the tool is "not lying" for any of many reasons they can lie.

For all the folks talking about how the $30 rotors off Amazon or from AAP aren't worth your time and aren't right for the car and all that--what in the world do you think your local shop or dealer are slapping on your car or truck? If Amazon or AAP are selling some crazy high performance rotor for $150 each, what do you think the markup will be there from the garage or dealership? Probably about $450 each.

OP, the Exxon on 50 by the police station near Fair Oaks Mall does good work. They're not cheap, but the guy is mostly honest and his prices are reasonable.

They're clueless. They think BMW or whatever actually make their own rotors.

It's not 20 years ago. The Chinese have better machine tools than we do at this point.

Whatever you do, don't let anyone put drilled/slotted rotors on your car. It's a marketing gimmick that has been proven over and over to reduce braking power and brake life.

Don't let them mess with your parking brake either, it hardly ever needs replacing and is just a gimmick to sell you more stuff. they tried to BS me that it was a road hazard, and i think he quoted me at like 300 bucks (for something that was probably not even worn).

Actually slotted rotors are ok, but drilled are not. Drilled and slotted is a gimmick that are weaker and have reduced breaking function.

You are both wrong. Drilled and slotted rotors are both considered ancient technology. You want the new threaded rotors, but only certified mechanics can obtain them. Not available on Amazon, etc.

4 hours to change pads/rotors on a Mini?!?

Maybe that's why he's a FORMER "pro."

I'd recommend you find a different "mechanic."

Rotors and pads are pretty ez.

jackup car

take wheel off bolts

take dust caps off caliper pins

undoor caliper pins and place caliper on a box, don't hang by the brake line. inspect brake lines for wear and replace if needed.

if you don't have a caliper tool, open the brake fluider resovoir so it can expand

use a c-clamp and push out the piston.

paint brake pads with never squeel compound

replace pads

use allen wrench to take off rotor, replace rotor and put on a new hex head bolt

inspect caliper pins for rust, lube with high temp lubricant

reassemble and close brake fluid resoviour

barring any siezed/rusted components, its a 15 min job per wheel.

Change your brake fluid while you are at it. you don't want your pistons to sieze up and have one brake drag.

Outside of track usage, or perhaps the autobahn theres not much of an advantage other than reduced unsprung weight.

You aren't going to experience brake fade in daily driving.

I go out of my way to go to Daves Automotive in Chantilly, it isnt convenient for my location but finding a good HONEST mechanic is hard to do so it is worth the drive or tow as may be the case.

Hey, man, honestly, I don't even know any good car repair shops, because I always fix my car by myself, because I like and know how to do it. The only thing I can advise you is a good online store with car parts and all sorts of accessories. I constantly buy there, I have one Nisan my wife's car and my Mercedes and I sometimes buy some Nissan accessories or Mercedes ones, delivery costs some pennies, the quality of the product is super, in General, there are no challenges at all, only opportunities!

I use Hometown Auto off Walney and 50.
Here is the info along with 200+ reviews.

What I like best is all upfront pricing.
