Immigrants and waiting for jobs

Okay this might be a dumb question but here goes. Since people in Herndon got so mad about about all those immigrant people outside the 7/11 waiting for jobs, it's been all over the papers with those Minutemen taking pictures of them and following vans with employers and stuff. How come no one makes a big deal about other places where immigrants hang out? Specifically, the corner of Hummer Rd., the Ruby Tuesday at Fairfax Circle, the 7/11 near Fairfax Circle near the Lamb Center (homeless shelter) etc. I see them there all the time hanging out.

Define "big deal".... I know residents in all those areas who have been vocal about the situations in those areas. The reason it is such a big thing in Herndon is because it caused almost every person on the town council that supports the center to lose the subsequent election after the center was formed.

That made the story into a headline... in the washington post. So herndon self-elevated their personal issues into the national spotlight, making them the "poster child". That makes them an easy target.

The big deal with Herndon is that taxpayer dollars were used to start a Day Laborer Center. The pros of this is that you won't have as many day laborers hanging out in front of the 7/11 and loitering around peoples' neighborhoods. The cons of this is the community appears to be encouraging illegal behavior from contractors.

As for other towns, the past few times I have driven through Fairfax City I have seen Day Laborers just sitting around on Highway 50. Seven years ago when I lived there I NEVER saw this. It is a huge friggin' mess.

I think we need to look at why we get Asians, Mexicans, etc in this whole area. So the Asians come because we have high paying jobs and great schools, plus no driver training for them to worry about. Mexicans come because many jobs need doing around here that lazy people are willing to pay for. These lazy people have money becasue jobs in this area pay well.

Here is the Fairfax County economic model:

Rich white guy lawyer/lobbyist works 80 hours a week. He is married to rich white gal lawyer/lobbyist, who also works 80 hours a week. Rich white guy gets rich white gal pregnant. They go to Inova, where Indian/Pakistani doctors and Filipino nurses deliver the baby. Then rich white guy lawyer and rich white gal lobbyist go back to work for 80 hours a week, so they hire an illegal Mexican nanny to take care of the kid, an illegal Mexican maid to take care of the house and an illegal Mexican gardener to take care of the yard.

Then the rich white guy lawyer and the rich white gal lobbyist bitch about illegal immigration when a group of 20 Mexicans move in next door to them and they bitch about how hard it is to make ends meet without dual income and the bitch about how the schools are failing their rotten kids who they never spend any time with.

Americans will do the jobs - for $20 an hour. What's the fun in that?

See. If you had one of those $20 an hour jobs you would be nicer.

Who the heck can live on 20/hr in this area without a multiple income household? "Americans" that live 3 hours away might do it for 20/per hour. I hope they like the commute.

I currently work in Reston and there are alot of people in my office who live in the WV panhandle. They don't have cheap homes. They definitely wouldn't be commuting a whole hour+ to Reston for just 20 bucks an hour.

Hah, it can take an hour to go just 15 miles on 28 and you'll get about 15MPG in a car that could normally get 32MPG making the trip during off-peak hours.

Well that would depend on what direction and what part of 28...

I drive about ten miles down 28 to work each day (between 29 and 606). The overpasses were a pain during construction, but they've made a huge difference. That part of the drive takes between 15 and 20 minutes on average (and I do not drive agressively). As for gas milage, my golf still gets about 30 MPG.

I used to commute into DC via VRE's Manassas Park station. I had no problems driving between Centreville and Manassas Park because I was always going in the opposite direction of traffic. However, I can imagine that it might take an hour to go from Manassas Park to Centreville during the morning rush hour.

Seems to me if you are working 2,000 hours a year at $20 an hour that comes to $40K a year. If you are dual income, that's $80K a year per family. You mean to tell me nobody is living in Fairfax who makes less than $80K a year? Ever hear of apartments? Condos, etc?

Multiple income and dual income are not the same thing. Multiple income implies illegals living on top of each other. Dual income indicates a married couple with two jobs.

ok here is the deal. not since the greeat depression has the divide between the very RICH and the poor been this wide. OK so fewer people have more of the money and are keeping it for themselves, the middle class is shrinking. Illegal immigrants and the so called jobs they are taking away as well as the tax burden are just a smoke screen by the old rich white guys to blind us to those facts. Immigrants have to work eat survive too. the majority of people are just bareley getting by, Let them work

It was like an hour to get from Manassas Drive to McLearen Drive. That's about 13-14 miles, actually.

I don't know if the overpasses have helped since I haven't made that particular trip during morning hell hours since they were built. I expect they probably did.

they help somewhat... the lights that are still there still cause backups though.

I've actually seen people exit from Wesfields to go north on 28 to make a left onto Willard.

They could have just made a turn off of Westfields to get to the same place, with likely much less delay and certainly less impact to 28 (especially for the ones who can't figure out how to merge and get across three lanes of traffic without creating a major traffic jam).

28 out of Manassas is hell at rush hour. There are several alternate routes from Manassas to 66 that may seem a little out of the way, but have so much less traffic that they are, in fact, much quicker.
