Remember to vote in favor of the meals tax on November 8th

The meals tax will generate over 40 million in revenue mostly from non county residents. It is a great way to raise much needed funds!

False.

"The Fairfax County Department of Management and Budget estimates that a one percent meals tax would generate approximately $22.5 million in Fiscal Year 2015"

False.

"Estimates are that 28% of those who would pay the meals tax are non-county residents."

1) Funding an increase in Karen Garza's housing allowance.

2) Hiring yet more unqualified consultants.

3) Hiring yet more administrators with online Ed.D. degrees and no classroom experience.

4) Paying for the first round of construction of transgender bathrooms.

5) Funding turf field maintenance.

6) Financing the destruction of "questionable" books in county and school libraries.

7) Supporting more travel for school board members and administrators.

8) More business for Sea Pearl and Ted's Bulletin.

9) Additional funds for marching band camp and cheerleader workshops.

I will not vote for this. Why didn't the Board show any reductions? Why are w e forced to pay for all of the FRL, ESOL, and all the social programs? They need to trim all of those programs.

My back is tired supporting all of these freeloaders.

The national education budget of South Korea is just over 11 billion. The FCPS budget is just over 2 billion.

Something is very, very wrong here. Safe to say, South Korea probably does not have a lot of administrators with online Ed.D. degrees, their spending on transgender facilities is probably somewhere around zero, and they probably review contracts of educational consultants rather closely.

It seems FCPS could learn a thing or two from South Korea.

No. I don't want to pay more for lunch every day to cover stuff for people, here legally or not, who will never contribute to the tax base. I already pay plenty in car and real estate taxes. I work across the line from Alexandria and avoid going there at lunch for this reason. Reduce spending.

FCPS could turn many things into profit centers. The main idea: first, make things pay for themselves, then let them start to generate revenue.

Some ideas:

1) Football: pay to play, pay to watch, pay to boost if so inclined
2) Cheerleading: as football
3) Marching band: as football and cheerleading. Note just the marching part, if kids want to learn to play wind/percussion instruments, that's fine, but they need exposure to more than the standard band repertoire, which is pretty pathetic. Stravinsky, for example, wrote brilliantly for wind and percussion, so that's a starting point
4) Student government: work out the costs of overseeing it, pass them along to the parents of participating students
5) Transgender facilities: if you use them, you pay for them, plain and simple
6) Outside fundraisers: they should be transparent, nonprofit organizations; make sure their costs are not excessive, and impose strict controls on how much school time is used

Definitely going to vote NO. We don't need everything to keep getting more and more expensive. These idiots would tax every dollar we have if they could.

Here's a reminder to people that want to vote YES to any tax increase:

Why don't you just proactively write a check to the county? You're so in favor of giving the county money, then get all your friends to donate. What you pay in taxes is just the minimum requirement. If you feel the county, state, or federal governments deserve more of our money -- shut the fuck up and just give them more. Go get all your friends to do the same. Don't be stingy. You want the county to have money so bad .. give them as much as you can. Give them everything you have if you feel so inclined.

County employees and politicians are putting a lot of time and money into getting this tax increase passed. They are also enlisting the help of their financial supporters such as the teachers unions and real estate industry to quietly get out the vote without causing too much noise.

The targeted restaurant and food sales industries have neither the organization nor the money to fight this tax effectively, and are basically hoping that voters who have seen their property taxes increase without seeing better services will say enough is enough.

Posted by: $9,000/day FCPS Consultant ()
Date: July 14, 2016 09:44AM

FCPS has hired Eric Jensen at $9,000/day not to speak to students but to train teachers.

Jensen has many critics; comments made about him here are far from isolated:

https://edphilosopher.wordpress.com/2009/07/04/brain-based-learning-stone-soup-and-the-rhetorical-eric-jensen/

http://mindsofkids.blogspot.com/2014/12/why-eric-jensen-is-ruby-payne-on_31.html

Jensen claims to be an expert in neuroscience but holds no qualifications in the field.

Jensen has a theory called the "emotional keyboard" extolling, somehow, the chromatic scale over all others.

This is nonsense. Leonard Bernstein discusses the chromatic scale here:

https://books.google.com/books?id=TKRLstZDYLMC&pg=PA216&lpg=PA216&dq=leonard+bernstein+joy+of+music+chromatic+scale&source=bl&ots=EnlyA_pHBX&sig=EymvPo8bnzUhp0C77-1g6xDcfM4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi18JrJzvHNAhVGpx4KHXXYBUMQ6AEIKzAC

Bobby McFerrin, in a **neuroscience context** demonstrates the universality of the pentatonic scale:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne6tB2KiZuk

Jensen's "emotional keyboard" is, in a word, crap. Yet, FCPS has paid the man a pile of money on sole source contracts. This is not responsible.

Jensen is not the only one. He's right up there with Menville "Flip" Flippen, who holds a master's degree in counseling, but whose Texas license is dormant. Flippen, who claims to be a bestselling author, has not written a book since 2008. Flippen claims to have privileges in psychiatric hospitals-impossible given his licensure status.

FCPS has hired him, too; he, like Jensen, also has more than a few critics.

The list of wasteful County/FCPS spending is not short.

How is accepting Bobby McFerrin's analysis of scales over Eric Jensen's pathetic, and why is it a right wing position?

The truth of the matter is that FCPS wastes a lot of money. Some of this waste is in the form of consultants who, if nothing else, manage to market themselves very well.

It is probably safe to say this is the case with Jensen. It is also very telling that Jensen has not attempted to support his theory or to answer McFerrin's arguments about the ubiquity of the pentatonic scale.

It is astonishing that so many people think the Board of Supervisors and FCPS can do no wrong, even when their actions are wasteful and expensive.

It has been said well here and elsewhere-if you like the School Board so much, write them a check!

Yes, the Meals Tax is important. Because our friends in Richmond do not want us to have much power or autonomy (they just want to keep taking our money), we are stuck here in NoVa with a narrow tax base that depends heavily on taxation of property owners. This is akin to putting all one's eggs into the same basket. We need to shift some burden away from property owners and diversify the tax base. Towns, cities and counties all over the state have already taken this step (including nearly all of the other jurisdictions in this neck of the woods) and it's time that Fairfax County awoke and did the same.

Property owners' taxes will not go down, they will keep going up. All this talk about tax relief is just lies.

The truth of the matter is that the County and schools spend far too much money and, in many cases, have nothing to show for it.

Jensen is a good example of this-no one will stand up and justify his contracts, but they keep hiring him even though he has many critics he never bothers to answer.

$9/000 a day is nice. I'm sure he lives well in Hawaii off of his dubious bloviations.

Why can't we have a reasoned discussion about County and school spending? Oh no, instead we get a bunch of ranting and raving and an invitation to electrical sodomy.

Jensen is an interesting case study-the schools seem to like him, but he may be a god with feet (and feats) of clay. Apparently this is getting a little to close to home for someone, sitting at home wailing away on an emotional keyboard and cursing the day Bobby McFerrin stopped worrying.

This is where many of you on the right mess up. People do think the BOS and FCPS can do wrong. They actually believe BOS and FCPS are doing wrong and they agree certain BOS and FCPS actions are financially wasteful. The problem for your side is that accepting all of that as true does not automatically mean they have to agree with your side.

Most people want good public schools. They want reliable police and fire services. They want efficient courts and they understand the need for jails. They want good parks and good roads. They understand that in an intensely developed area such as this there is a benefit to reliable, affordable mass transit systems. They believe that government should make certain necessities available so that people who cannot afford those necessities can exist and work. They understand all of this costs money. While they may be disgusted with the wastefulness and the narrowly beneficial crusades that some of our leaders have engaged in, they don't believe starving the government and adversely affecting these services is the appropriate remedy.

What people want in this County isn't small government; it is good government. If Republicans had run and voted for good government types of candidates in 2015, you'd control the BOS and School Board now.

How fucking stupid can one person be?" Without the meals tax, ALL of the increases in County costs -- that are simply inescapable in the real world that you know so very little about -- will be piled on top of property owners. There is nowhere else for them to go. Piddly little user fees are not adequate to cover it. The far far far better plan would be to diversify the tax base and let folks who do not live in the county help us out with supporting what we do here. Swallow that if you can, dumbfuck.

None of the "good government types of candidates" are Republicans to start out with. The GOP has been taken over at all levels by reactionary demagogues and ideologues who are simply incapable of participation in effective governance.

It is good to know, finally, how dissent is treated. If you disagree with Chairman Bulova or Dr. Garza, you are a traitor who should be deported. This should be added to the list of FCPS suggestions.

But the best news of all is that certain examples of alleged wasteful spending, such as Eric Jensen, Flip Flippen, mindfulness, and the turf fields are of no consequence at all. That means, presumably, that no more money will be spent on them. This, at least, is a move in the right direction. Now, we just need to work on tolerance of other viewpoints.

Which is exactly where they should be. The meals tax is pure avoidance and an attempt to obfuscate the costs. The only reason for it is that they know that pushing more property taxes directly would face significant resistance and cause spending to come under even more scrutiny. Easier to try to hide it away in a meals tax under the guise that 'somebody else will pay it' and so that the primary patrons of the Board, developers and large property owners, are subsidized vs directly taxed.

Fucking Trumpublicans... Always wanting somebody else to subsidize their real estate deals.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with questioning Jensen's credentials. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with with pointing out that at $9,000/day, Jensen's hourly rate approaches that of a top tier attorney.

Furthermore, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with criticizing Jensen's "emotional keyboard" theory, especially since a very well constructed demonstration by Bobby McFerrin would appear to disprove it. McFerrin's demonstration was done in a neuroscience context. Ironically, Jensen, who claims substantial expertise in neuroscience, despite appearing to lack neuroscience credentials, has not addressed this criticism.

Finally, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with questioning the benefit to FCPS for hiring Jensen.

There is, however, much that is intrinsically wrong in calling people traitors and demaning their deportation.

If people like Eric Jensen (and others) so much, they are free to send them money. If people are so pleased with how the County and schools are run, they are welcome if not encouraged to send in extra money.

The meals tax should be approved but it likely will be voted down by typical ignorant-ass Fairfax county residents who just automatically reject all revenue enhancement plans because they are too damn stupid to realize what is in their best interest.

This is not how it works. If it were, I would have gotten a huge tax cut out of my opposition to the dumbass Invasion of Iraq.

Meanwhile, the county needs more funding and more diverse sources of funding. The Meals Tax is an eminently sensible way to achieve both of those things.

Wow, why didn't they get Eric Jensen to show off his enhanced keyboard skills at the Fairfax Festival? He could play "Turf Field Blues" and "Government Center Prelude" as well as a medley of Taylor Swift, Nikki Minaj, and Usher songs.

If they didn't toss money around like it was nothing ($9,000/day for this guy, who is probably an amateur Billy Joel) they would not need the extra revenue.

The reason I am going to vote for the meals tax is that it is a great way to get revenue from non county residents. At any given time there are thousands of tourists staying in our hotels and eating at our restaurants, people who travel here from other counties to work will pay the tax every time they go to McDonald's or any other food place. It is a great tax because it is not entirely on the backs of county residents.
History has proven that there will be little or no decline in restaurant patronage. The meals tax is a no lose situation for county residents.

By the Board's estimate 72% will be paid by county residents. Likely more.

Lower income and elderly residents will be disproportionately affected in order to subsidize wealthy property owners and developers.

Fairfax schools are declining because of all of the illegal aliens. Check out their scores on the various tests.

There is another problem in the Fairfax schools. It is excessive spending. They spend on a housing subsidy for Dr. Garza, they hire a "keyboard consultant" at $9,000/day, they hired Flip Flippen, who charged $10,000 for a one hour speech, they hired Tara Brach, an unlicensed psychologist, to give a workshop on mindfulness, they have the "Gatehouse" building stuffed full of do nothing bureaucrats. The school board and administrators travel and eat out a lot.

Yes, illegal aliens are a problem, but they exist in Arlington and Alexandria as well. The problem is not unique to Fairfax. If Fairfax has a unique problem, it is spectacularly bad management.

But this is the right idea-defeat the meals tax so that they cannot afford any more of their ridiculous schemes.

The meals tax is a great idea because non county residents will end up paying about half of it. Manassas, Warrenton, Vienna and countless other municipalities have implemented a meals tax and it has proven to be a win-win situation.
It may not pass in November because this is Fairfax county and we still have plenty of ignorant fucks here that will try to vote it down.

Sure, non-county residents do eat at restaurants here, but where does the "half" figure come from?

This is more FCPS propaganda. They need more money for the transgender bathrooms, and some of the turf fields are beginning to show their age.

It comes from the dark recesses of his back side. It is 28 percent which is from the language of the referendum. Here is the link. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/mealstax/images/2016-meals-tax-referendum-pamphlet.pdf

You are right about the meals tax not passing.

You are wrong about more money. The Board of Supervisors has had it with FCPS. If they try raising property taxes again, people will revolt. Just look at what happened in California back in the 70s, the voters capped property taxes at 1%.

Couney spending will have to go down. That will mean fewer parties, employee iPads, departmental newsletters, bonuses, and so on. Eventually someone will do a top to bottom review of the County, and entire offices will be cut.

Not a chance, bitch.

I have 27 years with the county and we have gotten what we want every single time. All you stupid taxpayers can do is slow it down a little.

We want your money and we are going to take your money and it's completely legal. If you don't like it feel free to move elsewhere.
