Pokemon GO, the game that is surging in popularity internationally. Some of you guys may or may not have heard or tried to play it. Others might already be on the trend. Fairfax natives who do play - what is your favorite location for pokestops, and where do you go to catch pokemon? P.S. NORTHERN VIRGINIA KNOWS NO TEAM BUT THE TEAM IN THE NORTH WHOSE NAME IS TEAM MYSTIC.

Do you need to wander around irl to find better pokemon?? would I be able to wander around the woods and find them or would I need to go to a mall or some place with other pokemon go accounts. Seems like a fun game but I don't really understand it

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/07/armed-muggers-use-pokemon-go-to-find-victims/

pickachoo.jpg

Pokémon Go's Wednesday launch on iOS and Android has proven a rousing success for franchise creator Nintendo and app developer Niantic, with the app rocketing (Team Rocketing?) up every major download and top-grossing chart. With arguably the biggest augmented-reality gaming audience ever in the West, the game is attracting a lot of attention, including good stock-related news for Nintendo—but it has also already proven ripe for exploitation of its players.

In particular, one major social aspect of the game—its "beacon" function—has already been taken advantage of in the city of O'Fallon, Missouri. That city's police department made a statement on Sunday morning confirming that a group of four armed men had used the app to lure victims to a specific place, at which point they mugged the unknowing Pokémon Go players.

The statement mentioned similar robberies taking place in neighboring St. Louis and St. Charles counties. A Gizmodo report received a statement from O'Fallon's police department, stating that "about eight or nine people" were targeted by these muggings in all.

Pokémon Go requires that its players walk to a nearly exact point in the real world—whose required distance can vary based on your smartphone and its GPS signal—to interact with its major systems, which include battle-loaded Gyms and item-granting Pokéstops. Additionally, players can use items, either found in the game or purchased with real-world money, to sweeten a Pokéstop so that it attracts more collectible (and lucrative) Pokémon monsters. O'Fallon's police department went so far as to clarify that this very thing happened in the case of these reported muggings: "You can add a beacon to a Pokéstop to lure more players. Apparently [the muggers] were using the app to locate people standing around in the middle of a parking lot or whatever other location they were in."

The statement also included a warning: "If you use this app (or other similar type apps) or have children that do, we ask you to please use caution when alerting strangers of your future location."

Niantic, the app developers behind Pokémon Go, has attracted negative attention for its precise-GPS requirements in the past, as opposed to its apps allowing players to simply be near a real-life location in the game. In particular, its warring-faction game Ingress was criticized by US military representatives in 2014 since it sometimes required players to drive up to restricted military buildings and bases to claim that game's territories.

But with Pokémon Go's popularity already surging past Ingress's peak, we can only imagine seeing more negative stories about a video game's use of real-life locations—especially one with such a "kid-friendly" franchise as Pokémon involved. (For example, on Sunday, The Independent reported on issues with loitering that the app has already attracted for some homeowners.) Niantic has not yet responded to Ars Technica's questions about whether its location-requirement system might be altered as a result of recent negative stories. We will update this report if that changes.

Happy to see this game in use. Kids leaving the house for first time since school is out. Walking several miles every day. Miracles happen. Seen more kids around the neighborhood outside than at any time in the last 15 years I think. This is good. OK maybe some safety issues but overall just use commonsense and have some fun.

Not all positive, 3 guys were already robbed at gun point while playing Pokemon go, it's a safe haven for criminals, someone playing decides to go to a disclosed location when there aren't many people around and it's a perfect opportunity to rob someone. They've been watching where Pokemon go players go. And DC is the least safest place to play.

Be careful kids. There has already been a few robberies committed by Democrat-voting felons, using Pokemon Go to lure kids to an area.

I wonder how many times the cops need to get involved with this nonsense. We had someone come up onto out porch at 3 in the morning Monday night, pounding on our front window and yelling something about "Peekachu". fucker ran off as soon as I turned the front lights on but it scared my whole family, we thought he was trying to break in. can't believe they'd let stuff like this happen over a game.

The new app update is utter shit.

Niantic took down pokegps and poke vision. But they haven't fixed the 3 step glitch. In fact, they just removed that feature all together, so that we now can only wander around aimlessly and hope that we find something good.

To break those sheerly out of spite when you have no alternative to make the game tolerable is just childish. And this post, I also agree with: https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo/comments/4vk6e4/niantic_should_go_after_botters_and_spoofers/d5z92xm

You are a fucking loser. You belong in the Mike O'Meara Show thread. Ask for peekza, he is the best pokeman player in NoVa.

HIGH SPAWN RATE AREAS include Mosaic District, Old Town Alexandria, Old Town Fairfax, and D.C. (Obviously) I had one friend go from 1 - 14 in a day and another 12 - 22 both in D.C.

WATER TYPES spawn in Mason A LOT. Especially around the pond. You'll see many trainers at all hours at the pond dropping lures. More can be found around the creek south of Mosby Woods Dr, Burke lake, any creeks usually that are on google maps.

TONS of PokeStops are littered throughout cemeteries. Drive through them once or twice with a buddy that takes care of your phone (don't fucking pokemon go and drive) once or twice and your bag will be full. Of course, be respectful because you're in a fucking cemetery and mind the grounds keepers. Don't make things harder for the rest of us.

Since Niantic shut down PokeVision, I suggest using alternative apps to track Pokemon. I use SmartPoke2 which scans my surrounding area and I've found it to be accurate.

Pokemon GO? Huh. This game is quite interesting because I know that because of that game, people were put in jail! However, I really like the Pokemon itself, since this is a culture that makes kids happy. My son and my daughter actually really like to see how Pokemon attacks the opponents. However, I remember that I played in the Sega Megadrive Pokemon game in the back of the nineties. I still remember my enjoyable memories. Sometimes, I download the rom of the Pokemon from the https://romsie.com/ database that allows downloading any kind of classic game at any time. How do you think?
