Medical care in Jail
Posted by: Clark ()

I have 3 month sentence i need to do. I was wondering if the county would allow me to continue taking my medication for hair loss. I have medical slip indicating I have to take them. How does it normally work.

If it isn't medication for a geniune illness, I doubt they will let you take your hair loss medication. I think your balding problem can wait until you get out of jail.

Just curious, why are you going to jail?

It's for probation violation charge from 2000, I really thought they forgot about it but I guess not. It's serious because it's medical procedure that I had and I need to continue taking medication for it or otherwise it would reverse everything.

I doubt they will let you take that particular medication. It sounds like it is cosmetic and not medical. If this is Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, they barely give you enough food to live on, so don't expect any consideration when it comes to hair loss. I know its important to you, but I don't think it will be to the jail staff. I'm sure its disheartening to think you have to start all over again.

Best advice I have is to get your doctor to write a letter stating your case. If you have an attorney, get him involved too. Good luck.

Ask your doctor if there's any way he could justify saying that it would be medically dangerous or medically something or other to discontinue use of this drug too quickly, or at all.

Even though it is not for a health problem, it could still, possibly, be dangerous to stop taking the medication suddenly. Some drugs can cause seizures or other adverse reactions if you stop taking them suddenly.

Rebecca's advice about getting your lawyer involved is probably the best way to go. I'm sure he can file a petition with the court requesting the judge to note in your sentencing that you should be allowed to continue taking this and any other prescribed medications.

Above all, I don't think it's up to the sheriff's department to be deciding which medications are medically necessary and which are not. How do they know that you aren't being prescribed a hair growth medication "outside the box" for a more serious issue like high blood pressure or some rare disease?

But I've heard from people who have been to Fairfax jail with real medicines prescribed that were never given their medicines while in jail. So definitely bring a copy of the prescription and maybe even a note from your doctor for any medications you are taking, and bring it up with the Judge, first, and then with the jailors.

To survive in stir you need to belong to a prison gang.

If you're white, that pretty much means the skinheads.

Skinheads don't have no hair. Problem solved.

Relax. I'm pretty sure our government isn't going to make YOU pay for it.

You pay taxes, just like the rest of us, you don't pay for individual things. You don't own every expenditure of the government -- besides, there are other forms of income that the government also uses to pay for these things, fees, licenses, fines, etc.

But the problem with that is, our government has become structurally designed to waste taxes, so you either have a problem with paying taxes, or you accept the waste that comes with it.

Being outraged at any specific expenditure, or yelling at a cop that "I pay your taxes" is silly. Your tax dollars, along with the 160 million other individuals and however many corporate and business taxpayers goes into a general fund that is then distributed among all the agencies, programs, etc.

Your taxes are your payment for citizenship, not the purchase of a right to demand how that money be spent. You already have that right in other ways, like petitioning your lawmakers to change laws or whatever.

It would be like saying that since you pay rent, you have a right to insist upon how the landlord spends that money. You may not like that he spends some of it on slot machines, or on booze, but you owed the rent, and that is now his income, to with as he sees fit.

With the government, you have voting rights, not taxpayer's rights. Don't like how the money is spent, change the law. But it has nothing to do with how much you pay or the fact that you pay taxes.

Fairfax abovegrnd, what's your problem dude? Do you have a stick up your ass to make you this grouchy? Your not paying for anyone's medical treatment so do us a favor and STFU. The jail has a legal obligation to provide with the same medications we were on in the streets. They better have my medication ready and waiting for on my first day of incarceration or god help I will sue the county to bankcrupcy.

I doubt you will be able to sue the county to bankruptcy. You have a right to medical care, and all, but you will not bring the county to its knees over your little court case. You definitely should pursue all legal and medical rulings, but at best you can ensure that the county respects your doctor's medical decisions.

Either way, it won't actually impact un-Farirfax aboveground's wallet. His taxes will be the same this year and next year, as they were last year. Getting caught up in that "not on my tax dollars" trap is silly. Whether the county provides every prisoner with viagra, or hair growth drugs, or not, his taxes will not go up or down unless the general assembly votes to raise or lower taxes.

Oh, wait. I forgot. We don't pay taxes based on a percentage of our income. We are actually given an itemized bill from the government, and we have to pay that itemized bill each year. So if you get hair growth pills while in jail, I'm going to have to pay a little bit more in taxes next April. SO FUCK YOU! YOU COST ME MORE TAX MONEY!!!

The original charge was assault on a police officer, and a robbery of a residence with a weopon. My lawyer assured me I can bring my medication to the jail on my first day and once the doctor says they are legitimate I can continue taking them.

I wish you the best of luck with getting any medical treatment at Fairfax for anything not life-threatening. My son has a serious condition (has metal sticking out of his arm - was put in to hold his elbow together after a 30 foot fall 2 years ago) - the doctor he saw at the jail said he might need another skin graft - he referred him to a specialist - that was a month ago! While my son made a mistake and is paying for it, I don't think the cost should be the loss of his arm (he thinks mold is growing around the bloody part). Does anyone know of any agency to intervene? At some point, this should be humanitarian.

By the way, I pay my fair share of taxes and my son is fully covered by my insurance ....which has been used in the past when he was transferred to another facilty for a short time.

As for the burgers and fries comments earlier - my son says he is hungry ...and he has lost a lot of weight.

Clark, see if your lawyer can have your jail time postponed until 2014. Then under Obama care they will have to give it to you. You see you have a pre-exiting condition which is covered under the new health bill and best of all you won't have to pay for it. We the working people will pay it for you.
Actaully you should not have to go to jail. You said you did not mean to strike the officer. He had not bussines to arrest you anyway. You see under this new Socialist Goverment if I work hard for something and you don't,I am expected to share my stuff with you. So in fact you did not commit any crime, you were taking what you were entitled to.Fire you lawyer he did a terrible job for you.
He should have sued the police on your behalf so we the working people could pay your settlement. After all you are entitled to it.

I have been incarcerated a numerous of times and receiving proper medical treatment is NOT going to happen. The majority of our taxes paid to the government are going into someone's pockets!! I have never committed a violent crime, just driving on suspended licenses and possession of marijuana. I have Brittle Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and they would not give me insulin until my Blood Glucose Level was over 250 because they could not afford to give me proper care. The Medical staff would get frustrated with me and used violence to make me sign a waiver saying that I didn't want treatment when i did!!! They were using a Type 2 Diabetic Regimen to treat my Type 1 diabetes. Brittle Type 1 Diabetes statistically is shown in 3 diabetics out of 100,000. Which, I have the rarest form of Diabetes. One of the leading causes of Ketoacidosis is not enough insulin.High blood sugar makes the blood sticky and causes the kidneys to waste extra water (fluid). These things cause the blood to become "thick". when the body lacks insulin, the cells have to use fat and muscle for energy, which causes acids to build up in the blood. High levels of acid in the blood worsen the symptoms of diabetes; thirst, weakness, frequent urination, cramps, nausea, weight loss, and the inability to function clearly; and if untreated can lead to Ketoacidosis. The Jail House Authorities do not care about you infact they probably want you to die!! My kidneys are failing now and I am going on the insulin pump next month!! I still have a warrant out for my arrest. I am actively on the run from law enforcement because I feel that my life is in danger!!! FUCK THE JUDGE! FUCK THE DA! FUCK THE POLICE! FUCK THE SHERIFF!!

If the prison system made James Trafficant (D-Ohio) turn over his hairpiece when he had to go to jail for corruption, what makes you think they'll keep your prescription for Rogaine active?

I did read something a short time back that jail was more stressful for women than it is for men. Apparently, because they don't have access to makeup and hair coloring, they really start to show their mileage. This is what's causing the stress for the ladies.

Clark, better do your research, Fairfax County Sheriff's Office has never lost a law suit. In the furture you will have to decide weather to stay out of jail or go bald. My guess is your going to lose your hair while serving your 3 months.

I am transexual male taking breast hormone growth. It's very important that I continue to take these pills or I can have serious health complications. I am serving an eight month sentence, and have supplies for said time. Would I be able to bring those with me when I turn myself in?

Long Dong,

I here ya talkin....when I was in the can in fairfax county we could get eggs and cheese whenever we wanted. I dont know what all this talk is about starvin in jail. We just ordered up the chow and it was delivered. So. Clark no problem, they may be serving steak and eggs now. Does anybody know what the house anal lube is in the fairfax jail. It was issued once a week by the sheriff, it was unmarked, but was awsome lube. My bunkmate and I thought it was analeze, but seems alittle less sticky. Clark if you can find out what the house brand of anal lube is and post it when you get out....that would be awesome.

Once you are there, have a family member or friend bring up all your medications , as long as they are prescription they have to give them to you. There is a box on the 2nd floor of visiting to put them in. Now if they are narcotics they won't let you have them. I was in there in 2004 for a driving charge anyway , I had brought all my meds but they would not let me have my pain meds they changed the rules used to be prior to 03 if you brought them they would put you in medical while you were taking them. I had 2 herinated discs in my back. They said unless u are pregnant and on drugs when come in nope, they give you nothing for withdrawls either, saw some pretty messed up cases of really sick people. Funny thing is you get charged 2.00 a day rent to be there.. Best advice stay out of trouble!!!
