30 years ago when Mike was alive, the chili dogs were the shit. So were the Chili Macs.

This was back when he had the bread ties on strings across the inside. He had thousands of the bread ties because he sold countless chili dogs.

Last time I went there was 2011 - Never been back.

Most Vienna moms are into chili dogging.

I suppose that's what you resort to when your average Vienna dad is a fudge packer.

That picture looks like someone took a diseased shit on a pair of hotdogs. That's just morally wrong.

Chili is a stew, not a sauce. It belongs in a cup or a bowl. Only.

When I was in the Navy, a buddy of mine went on Liberty in the PI, and caught something that made his pecker look just like that. But no bun.

The Doc give him a shot, and a bottle of pills to cure it. He couldn't drink any beer or booze for about a month.

The place is disgusting. They make money.. why do they have the same tables and seats since 1910? Good question. The bathroom is basically a part of the dining area. If one of the fat people decides to take a crap in the one person bathroom.. Good luck eating your food without throwing up. The tables are sticky with ketchup and soda spilled in the 60's.

The food itself gives bar food a bad name. The famous chili dogs are tasteless. The chili is out of a can and the hot dog is from the dollar store. Everything on the menu will give you the sh#ts. No joke.. my friend is still in the bathroom. "

Same (turkey) dogs as always. Same chili as always. They still sell some 10,000 of them a month. If you don't like them, don't buy any. No one will care.

I can, and do make better chili dogs at home. I prepare a zesty beef base chili, and serve it up over a jumbo sized Kosher beef frank.

Top with chopped(fine)onions, and freshly grated(real)extra sharp cheddar.

The Vienna Inn used beef franks 30+ years ago, but they went cheap, and lost my business.

Same way for me only I like to run the chili through a blender for a couple of
pulses and then cook it down to a near paste. I also place the dog under the
broiler just long enough to melt the cheese and slightly toast the bun.

I wish I could buy those spicy bite hot dogs that 7-11 sells. They are made by Oscar Mayer. I tried to get Apu the Hot Doggie Attendant to sell me a case of them.

Oscar Mayer ships them frozen in 50 count boxes.

Absolutely, I agree that you can make a great chili dog and bowl of chili at home. Get a loaf of that fresh "every morning French Bread" from Giant $1.99 or any store and cut it about foot long and then in half. Chili is always a matter of choice, with or without beans. I like the beans and sharp cheddar cheese on top, maybe a few onions. The quality of the hot dog is also key. Buy the bun length or 1/4 lb. Hebrew National at BJ's. If you buy the crappy 8 for a dollar dogs, well you'll regret it. Who knows what the hell they put in those? It sure ain't BEEF.

Never been to Vienna Inn, always wanted to go, but after reading this comments. Nope.

The chili dogs were something to experience. Mike got older and his worthless son got involved in the kitchen, and that is when it went wrong.

The décor inside is what it is, back in the day we would fold over an empty Marlboro Red box, and put it under the table leg that caused the table to wobble.

If there were onions left on the table from the previous diner, it was a bonus!

It is what it is, a cheap bar with hot dogs. I get that it's a local icon, but I never understood the draw. For cheap beer and cheap dogs, it's exactly what I would expect.

I've eaten a zillion chili dogs in my lifetime and I went to the Vienna Inn so excited about getting a good chili dog. Really, they were no better than what you get at 7-11, and the guy behind the counter at 7-11 was much nicer than the waitress at the Vienna Inn.

No, they didn't. The VI has always used turkey dogs and the same original recipe for the chili. Meanwhile nobody cares at all about you or your business. And they are right not to.

LOL! Phillip was a foodie -- a Culinary Institute graduate. He was but a hired hand in the kitchen and had nothing to do with the chili dogs. As a manager, you can blame him for expanding the menu and making the place more family-friendly before deciding to pack it in and move to Connecticut, but that's about it. Mike and Mollie were the top guns then, with VI-lifer Marty Volk at the helm since 2000. Check out Church Street Pizza as well, if you haven't before.

Hasn't changed. Except nobody's dumb enough to have a Marlboro Red box on hand anymore.

This may not be any of my business, but we bought many a keg at the Vienna Inn back in the 1970's. We usually got 3 or 4 kegs, and drove over to the ice rink on Pickett Road to shovel ice into the back of my buddies pick-up.

The three of us would get a 12 pack of chili dogs to go, and yes they were beef hotdogs back in 1977. I know this because I asked them why the chili dogs were so good.

And after the ice melted the next day there would be all this gross dust like crap on the kegs and in the truck bed.. LOL

And those Dogs were .25 cents and a beer .37 cents.. In 1975. 1.25 Cents for a Pizza. 1.25 cents for lots of things..Chili Mac.. Tell them at the register what you had and pay. The beer can collection, the shuffleboard. The plywood beat booths, the fur strips across the ceiling tiles completely Beat that was the Vienna Inn then. And full of "Vienna Types" .And Lots of WW2/Korean War Vets back then still around. And Mike in the back at the walk in Beer cooler renting the taps, showing you the kegs..

No, they were NOT beef. Ever. Mike Abraham was quite a generous guy, but he was also cheap. He started out with turkey dogs on May 1, 1960, and nothing has been changed at any point since.

Mike left because he was dead. Philip was already gone at that point, so Mollie ran the place herself for a while, but soon sold to Marty Vogt who had grown up in the VI kitchen. Might have been born there.

And it was the two sister waitresses -- Erma and Dolores -- who started the gruff-and-grouchy thing. The VI was of course an edgier place back then and the girls needed a way to keep the yahoos in line. Sort of like the fire-breathing nuns in Catholic schools that you hear about. For her part, Mollie Abraham was a rabble-rousing liberal feminist, so she encouraged the whole thing. The routine worked for all concerned, but times, staff, and the clientele have of course all changed since.

Me too. I had a friend who was unfortunate enough to order a "coke". The crabby waitress told him "This is a beer joint! If you want a coke,it is over there. Go get it yourself!". The rest of us busted out laughing. That was around 1988 and I still remember it vividly. During Redskins games, Mike walked around with a cigar box of wooden nickels. Whenever the Redskins scored a touchdown, you could buy a beer for 5 cents using the wooden nickel.

Having cashed out and fled Vienna some time ago, I saw this thread and the mention of the Vienna Inn.

Mike Abraham....Pretty much an asshole...capable of random acts of kindness (contrition?), but also capable of duplicity and fraud (his scheming brought down the Bank of Vienna).

But hey, that doesn't get in the way of a chili-dog...it was his fishwife partner, Molly, who fancied herself some sort of loveable gruff tavern keeper, when she was just a foul-mouth harridan, that ruined the place.

The icing on the cake was the son. Culinary school doesn't bestow a personality on you. That little shit chased away many customers.

Good riddance to all them.

I was visiting Vienna recently, and stopped at the Vienna Inn. Decor pretty much the same...minus the strings of bread-tabs, and the staff was friendly and made it a pleasant place...nicer than it ever was in the "old days."

Still the honor system, however, on better days, they ask what table you were sitting at and they can usually pull up and order.

The burgers are good at the Inn as well. They also always have very good tomatoes for the sandwiches.

Marty seems like a decent guy, the wait staff is all younger gals that are reasonable pleasant and some good to look at, even for the dirty old men.

Same crappy tables and chairs, the old phone booth is still there, my kids love the burgers, dogs and fries. They have decent specials and soups that the older crowd seems to enjoy. I see a few regular old ladies stop in for a chili dog or a bowl of soup often as well.

The Inn is the Inn. The dogs are good, overall the food is all decent and consistent. I would not say anything is outstanding but just good, reasonable priced grub.

Spurred by your anecdote about the Bank of Vienna, I did a search for articles. The Post had an interesting article in 1982 about the chicanery: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/business/1982/10/04/in-house-dispute-leaves-bank-of-vienna-ripe-for-takeover/c468d8a1-d353-4835-8ce7-42926fce31bf/
