Lightning bugs (lack of)

Is it too early in the season, or does it just seem like the yards around here were teeming with lightning bugs?

I see one or two in the evening, but not the light shows I remember...

Less woods and more car pollution have killed off the lighting bugs.

I've lived here since I was kid - noticeably fewer fireflies around. Kinda sad.

Someone already had this same thread yesterday. To save you the time, we determined that the lightning bugs all moved out of Fairfax due to liberal tax hikes to support the illegals and tranny policies; the bugs can't afford the area anymore.

are you in the outer suburbs? I've noticed around here, Annandale, there have been fewer and fewer over the years. Along with fewer and fewer fields and trees. It seems every time I go somewhere I haven't been in a year or so there's a new office building or new plastic looking apartments or McMansions. I was in Vienna the other day with the girlfriend and decided to go home via Park Ave. and Cedar Ln. so I could show the girlfriend the little "easter house". a small white house painted with pastel trim. What a surprise, Park Ave is now lined with these giant McMansions that all look like they're made of plastic and the easter house is gone.

They mostly live around marshy and wooded areas. A whole lot of that has been paved over during the last 50 years. Heck, you won't even see mosquitos around more heavily populated areas. Light pollution also disrupts their breeding patterns, and we have a lot of well-lit property around. And when half your neighborhood is spraying their lawns with chemicals, that doesn't help keep them around either.

Many residents are having their yards sprayed for the illegal Mosquito and its having a trickle down effect killing all Insects. http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150620/PC1207/150629964/1268/commercial-mosquito-control-business-is-growing-but-spraying-could-hurt-good-bugs&source=RSS

Ah. I was right. We switched to another commonly this year called Bee Kind that is supposed to be better for beneficial insects like bees. I hope it helps not kill lightening bugs as well, but not sure.

I live in McLean - but I do live in a wooded area with a stream in the back yard. I also spray the yard for mosquitos but the lightening bugs are still here like crazy. But like your point - its probably because the area isn't crazy over developed.

Hey y'all, some years there would be thousands in the woods and fields along According creek, blinking like the stars in the night sky, which by the way y'all can also no longer see here. They come and go depending on the weather in the winter and during breeding times... But there sure ain't as many as there used to be 'round here...

We have thousands of them in the pines behind our home - look like 70 foot Christmas trees. Magical.
