Fairfax Office Of Security Issues Tip To Keep Burglars Away While on Vacation

Here are eight ways to keep burglars at bay while you’re away:
1.) Post notes on your door stating you are not home and when you will return. This helps neighbors and delivery people know you're gone.
2.) Don't leave a vehicle parked in your driveway or regular parking spot.
3.) Turn off all the electricity to your house except one or two outside lights. Leave outside lights on 24/7 in the day time to illuminate shady areas.
4.) Ask a trusted neighbor, relative, friend or pet sitter to keep and eye on any mail or newspapers piles; crooks will try to remove or steal newspapers off your driveway. A trusted neighbor will make sure those papers stay right where they land until you get home.
5.) Place a bunch of extra keys near your door with a note for delivery people to leave packages inside(ei. under doormats, flower pots and on top of a porch light.)
6.) Don't consider having someone mow your yard and water your outdoor plants.
7.) Keep all doors and windows open; apartment dwellers, make sure any sliding glass doors are unlocked, especially on the ground floor in case the fire department needs quick access!

Hmmmm...these don't sound like good ideas to me. I think maybe OP is a burglar trying to trick us into making his job easier.

This is good advice because a burglar seeing all these enticements will automatically smell a trap and move on to another house.

Great advice if you're running a booby trap, and you are laying in wait with a 12-gauge in the dark in the house. See how many burglers you can pick off every night, just like shooting ducks in a baby pool!
