Does anyone know the process for getting security clearance

Some lady knocked on my door asking questions about my neighbor

I really don't like the guy and don't have anything nice to say about him

Are these interviews meaningful or a bunch of bs

You need a job that requires one.

Yes, if you start the clearance they will ask for your neighbor's information as far back as 10 years. You have to provide references that they will interview.

Security Clearances are often kind of a farce IMHO.

So what can happen is sometimes "official" government agents visit to find out about a neighbor, sometimes it is a flunky government contractor. Often the government contractors do not visit, but call.

Whether or not you know, like or even despise the neighbor, it is best to answer the questions the best you can about the person. You are only one person out of many that may be interviewed.

What the purpose is to understand if the neighbor can easily be bribed or has a past history of reckless behavior. Is the neighbor a good and patriotic citizen and do they appear to be living beyond their means. They often ask about possible drug and alcohol use as well.

Sometimes these clearance checks are for something as simple a promotion in a government agency even if they do not require a clearance or work with classified materials. I had a neighbor that works the EPA and apparently was up for a promotion and the "government contractor" security clearance folks came poking around. I checked with another friend of mine at the EPA and he told me that this kind of "background" check is starting to become more "SOP" these days for transfers and promotions. Maybe to do a bit more due diligence than in years past.

I do not really know or associate with the neighbor that was being checked out, even though I have lived here for 16 years, the dude and family is a bit strange, have few friends and other that some very empty and casual conversions, I rarely see the guy or his family. A bit strange IHMO because I am out walking often and see and speak with many of my other neighbors. This guy is really not neighborly or social, again a bit strange.

I just told the "contract" security firm to do some Internet searching and come up with their own conclusion. I did not say much positive or negative. When I was asked if I thought the guy was a security risk, my response was this was not my job to determine this, I had no idea either way. I just mentioned that few people really knew much about this family and we do not hang out and socialize. I had no interest in suggesting that this guy would not be a security risk, because again, I should not be put in a situation I had to make this kind of call.

Yes, updates on security are very important. The fact that you don't like your neighbor should not enter into your answering questions. If you must, you can always say we aren't friends, but I know nothing that would make him a security risk.
Remember, you are not the only neighbor who will be interviewed.

Also something to remember, the person going for the clearance can request a copy of the investigation if they fail and see who was interviewed and what they said.

Uh, yeah, no they can't. So you've got a huge "FUCK YOU" going for you.

But what is true is if you ask the investigator to show you her tits or his penis, depending, they have to, by law.

I had that happen to me. They asked about a neighbor two doors down. I told them I didn't know much about her as she works and I hardly see her. Just try to be honest. She is a good quiet neighbor so that works for me. I let her know they asked me about her. She knew that it would happen to one or more of her neighbors.

When my security clearance was conducted they interviewed four of my neighbors,
my high school principal and one teacher, the local police chief and county
sheriff, and those are only the ones I know about. It was easy for them
because I'd lived in the same house all my life. If you've moved around a
lot, expect more.

If you say something defamatory to an investigator, it's advisable not to bank on the subject never finding out who said it. If a clearance is denied there will be written reasons for the adverse determination. The decision may contain enough information to attribute specific details back to their source, even though specific individuals are not named.

Moreover, although investigation records are not supposed to be released to the subject, others who may have a sufficiently close relationship with the subject might disclose details in confidence, particularly if they felt it was something out of character.

There's a Marine at Special Ops with a Top Secret security clearance living with a lover outside his marriage and said woman has a lengthy arrest record. There are some locals people here in the suburbs working to free this wife from her husband's grip. If that guy, a colonel, can maintain a security clearance and live with a lover, anyone can. Social media tells it all and so does his lover.

What's his name, faggot? So many flaws in this story. When you're active duty military they give you the clearance you need don't really do an investigation (BRADLEY MANNING), but you can still eff up and lose your clearance. Adultery is already an offence under the UCMJ, at least for an officer, even one with no clearance. What are you waiting for, faggot? Why all the faggotry?

your neighbor can see everything you say about him....by filling out a FOIA after his clearance is denied or approved, he will see everything, everyone said about him...

But it isn't my job to do uncle Sam job
Plus I don't want this guy torching my house if he gets denied

Can't I just tell the interviewer no comment

There is a female contractor named Sharon Moreno of Sterling Va, who has a clearance but illegally accesses websites she has been banned from. He son was banned from the same site and she continues to encourage him to visit the site in violation of state law.

Sharon Moreno has knowingly made numerous false statements to police about the parties on the other side of a civil lawsuit she is involved in. She knowingly conspired with her attorney to send fraudulent bills to one of her witnesses. If Sharon Moreno can hold a clearance, anyone can.

Not always true. Depends on the agency conducting/sponsoring the clearance. Defense, maybe so. Intelligence, not so much. No visibility, no recourse. Just "suitable" or "unsuitable."
