Process and Timeline on Stuart Name Change Issue
Dear Stuart Community,
I want to thank everyone for their thoughtful comments as part of the Stuart name change conversation we’ve been having over the past several months. Students, parents, alumni and community members have provided valuable insights in emails, in comments to our survey and at the May 23, 2016, community meeting.
After reading historical documents and arguments on both sides, considering all the community input to date and discussing this with my colleagues on the School Board, I do believe this high school should have a name that is more reflective and respectful of a diverse community. At the same time, we need a path that gives the community more time to have input into the decision and address key concerns.
The approach I’m putting forward today would create a working group to give further study and consideration to the best way to achieve a goal of renaming the school, to report back to the Board with recommendations by June 2017. The working group would explore public-private partnerships to finance a name change; ways to prevent added burdens on the school’s booster clubs, PTSA and Stuart school administration; the best method for transitioning from the old name to the new; proper records retention, and the best timing for such a change. The working group would also solicit ideas for a new name while identifying ways to honor and preserve the school’s history, traditions and past achievements and to memorialize its decades as J.E.B. Stuart High School.
This Proposal will be posted as New Business, Item 6.02 for the Board’s June 30, 2016, regular meeting and as an Action Item at our July 28, 2016 meeting. The Board doesn’t discuss or vote on New Business items. This will provide for a month for public comment, review and possible revisions before a vote on July 28, 2016.
If approved by the School Board, the working group would consist of students, parents, community members, alumni, and business and community leaders to be chosen by the Superintendent in consultation with the Board.
From the comments to date, it’s clear there are strong feelings for and against a name change. The most frequent concern and objection raised is about cost and the burden on either the school system or PTSA and boosters. One of the working group’s main tasks would be to find viable solutions to address this barrier.
Background on this issue, and the public comment received at our community meeting, can be found here: Proposal to Change the Name of J.E.B. Stuart HS
If you would like to comment or provide suggestions between now and July 28, you may write to the full School Board at

ssevans@fcps.edu. You may also sign up to testify at our regular School Board meetings on June 30, July 14 or July 28 by going to Citizen Participation Link on the Monday before the meeting:
I look forward to receiving more community input on this proposed approach as a way to move forward.
Sandy
