I use resources from other states all the time. Georgia has some great stuff, as does NC. Rockingham County used to have a terrific technology site that I used all the time. Teachers are not doing this for fun - it is on our own time, and teachers have created most of this stuff anyway. Teachers want to help their kids learn.
You may not be aware of this, but at the elementary level, at least, there are virtually no more textbooks. We have online things that are not effective, and all the kids can't see the Smartboard clearly from their desks anyway, so they tune out. So teachers have to create lessons and worksheets for themselves, so many of us pay out of our own funds to buy subscriptions to online resources that have worksheets, Powerpoints, etc. It is impossible to make up lessons for all the subjects on your own.
There are no more spelling books. There are a couple of reading basals, but they are rarely used. There is no science text for younger kids. The math book is online, so the teacher has to print out worksheets if she wants the kids to do problems.
On top of this, EVERY SINGLE lesson has to show that the teacher differentiated for all 30 kids in the room. If not, the principal will ding her in her observation. It is not like the old days, where you started teaching on page one and covered the material in order.
So I think teachers all over the country should use anything they can to help the kids learn and give them a break.
