Stupidity of Fairfax City Council =More Traffic
Posted by: Deetman ()

The mayor and city council of Fairfax, and their "smart growth" committees are funny.

Everyone agrees Fairfax Blvd Shopping Center at Fairfax Blvd/Pickett in the circle was an eyesore.

Yet to build loads of apartment rentals in that area, is only going to make a traffic disaster far worse. I live in the city, and while they've made reasonable decisions before, this ones worth a dunce cap.

I have no doubt no council member or mayor Silverware will answer this, but your decision to this makes the whole area worse, not better and my guess is home values will decrease.

Is that the Scout on the Circle project? I know they're demolishing parts of the old site but hadn't heard if the project ever got a grocery store. If not, the project may not even happen...

I think the developers are paying off council members. It all build build build build with no regards to how that surge in traffic is going to cripple the roads.

Get ready for driving two miles taking 20 minutes.

Fairfax Circle is just the beginning. Hang on, it’s going to get worse.

Demolishing parts? The only thing I've noticed being demolished is/was the tiny H&R Block building.

From what I hear, they don't even have funding. I don't understand why they didn't have to show they had funding prior to the project being approved.

A fair question. Considering they make I believe $5 to $8,000 a year for lots of appearances, meetings and such after their real jobs.

When project was getting quick "approval", city was told Harris Teeters was going to sign on. Never happened. Never was likely to happen.
Now the anchor is unknown or not substantial enough to finance the vision of the Mayor and City Council.
They can still demolish pads without financing. That's how they make it look like something is happening over there. We'll see.

It's not surprising with Greenfeld(11th term) and others on the council to add to the morass of chokeholds not on 66. It's already commuter hell on Fairfax Blvd, and very busy through periods of the day.

And from what I've heard, Teeter pulled out. The location sucks for a grocery store. Cheap condos across the street with washing machines downstairs, and "supposed apartments " yet to be built.

Maybe the shitty hotels just south caused a problem too. Then again the circle is a cluster, and even a mixed used new title loan place and a park would have been better than this drivel. Silverware and council don't like this board, and even with the ouster of Loftus by three or so votes, the song remains the same.

Don't call those hotels shitty. They are history. They help me remember (imagine) how the road use to look in a different time. When you straighten-out the bends, flatten the hills, widen the road and remove the trees and other visual markers, you remove everything. Those hotels don't look trashy. The only thing run down and trashy is all the vacant property and commercial For Sale signs. Again, the voters have elected officials who sell them out the first chance they get. VOTE DIFFERENTLY next election. Save your town.

The hotels while "kind of historic ", need to clean up their shit and boot the dope and drunk users there.

There are plenty of historical sites in old town, Earps Ordinary and the Courthouse among others .

Yet these don't have much to do with Silverware and pals from making a one decent city a shithole. The apartments along with the title max loans and other crap=not helpful for traffic or property values. A boneheaded decision.

The members on council are blindly in the tank for Silverspoon. Not sure what, if anything, they have to gain besides losing all their seats next go around.
There are several other projects with apartments going up and down fairfax blvd that the traffic will be only part of the problem.
Did everyone here bitching about this actually vote in May? Or do voters have any confidence in the local elections now that we know Silverware will order recounts if he doesn't get his pick of snowflakes. There's a cancer in the city now.

They definitely do as he says. Only Loftus didn't blindly follow and she's now off the council. Stehle will be another follower.

Bunch of clueless whiny babblers. Times are changing. The City needs to also. Back in the day, the City didn't want New Lee Highway plowing right through the middle of town. So it followed a bypass around the town. But now that strip has been passes by and it needs to be revitalized. Replacing dying retail with newborn mixed-use development is one way to do that.

The roads do not need improvements. You assholes need to get rid of all those cars and start walking or using public transportation. You can rent a zipcar a couple times a year but that is it!

Its not whining, rather reality. No new roads with added apartments are a horrendous decision. Same goes for a lot of empty space in the "revitalized old town." There's a reason the gimmick water park at North St and University is there.

The way to improve the city is to improve the congestion first, then it will make it more viable for businesses such as title loan places.

Fairfax City has to stop. Tap the breaks. Specifically the mayor and city manager. It's unfortunate the city council members show no signs in taking the lead on this. Retaliation is a real fear of this group.

The city was a bit late joining the redevelopment bubble party and are now poised to get their clocks cleaned by ramming through the zoning rewrite, applying for state transportation funding matches on projects the public does not support, and for displaying a complete lack of fiscal discipline.

It appears there may be another temple in the making with discussion of a new city community center.

This may be a long 2 years.

Either Fairfax City works to stay relevant or it runs the risk of becoming the next Falls Church.

Actually it does need to stop. It's looking more like the Falls Church of the county, than the independent city of the same name.

I believe that Stehle entered the race as a means of retaliation against Ms. Loftus, hence her being off the council. Her and Greenfield must have seen the Silverware political dynasty up close, as Jeff lost by 3 or 4 votes.

Watch if he gets even more pro development, because all this council and dynasty have done is destroy a once vibrant and less traffic infused community.

Pretty soon it will be faster to walk around the county than drive. The streets are already overloaded and FFX county board just keeps giving out permits for high-rise buildings.

Time to start making builder pay for a FFX underground subway system.

What does the City Council say about all the businesses that have vacated and all the business that don’t want to come to the City? I would say the City Council has not made the City inviting to business at the least and a hardship for many (those wanting out). There are a lot of vacant properties, For SALE and For Lease signs up. We’re starting to look like a run down, dump.

Like the Town Of Vienna, Fairfax City is nothing more than a series of ugly, outdated strip malls and a clusterfuck of gridlocked traffic. The "old town" consists of banks, bailbondsmen, law offices, narrow sidewalks and too many lanes of cars racing to beat the next traffic light. What a pathetic mess!
