Anyone ever used PropanTaxi.com?

I heard an add on the radio today for $10 propane exchanges through propanetaxi.com. I normally pay abour $20 at Home Depot, and wanted to see if any has used the propane delivery service?

Thanks!

Never used em but let me know. I have considered it. They tout tht their tanks are 20 lb as opposed to 15 or 18 lb at Home De Pot.

Yes I use them, they are great. I signed up online, left my empty tank on my porch, the next morning the new tank was there. Easy, fairly cheap ($20), and no hassels. It's a great and convenient service.

If I knew I was getting 20lbs I'd use them rather than drive an empty somewhere else. But I'm not trading for the 15lbs ripoffs unless my tank is looking real bad.

I've used them once. They came and installed the new tank no problem, didn't even knock on the door to bother me. Good service, because I hate people...

I used them a couple times, and only recently did I remember that my propane tanks used to last me two years, and now they only last me about 2 or 3 months.

I'm pretty sure I'm not cooking any more frequently that in the past.

However, this has been going on longer, even when I was getting my tanks at Home Depot.

Years ago, I used to get my tanks refilled at a gas station near Fairfax Circle, and only had to make that trek about every 2 years.

If I sucked at cooking, wouldn't I use up the propane faster?

Sorry for liking my burgers rare, and cooking them for 4 minutes on each side.

We started using them last year. We found some old tanks at the curb on trash day. Used those to trade in for fresh tanks. We get two tanks at a time, so we're never without a supply of propane for grilling. Great service, quick, worth the $$$.

yeah...the exchange tanks dont last as long as filling the tank yourself. When I filled the tanks myself I would get about a year of use on one tank. Now I have to exchange the tank at least twice during grilling season.

I actually heard awhile back that when the price of gas/propane went up instead of the exchange companies charging more for each tank exchange they just put less propane in the tank.

I think i am going back to filling up the tank myself...as soon as i can get a nicer tank then the peeling/rusting tanks i receive with the exchanges

So I'm not crazy? I remember having to drive to this one gas station on 50 near fairfax circle, to get my tank filled. And I remember only doing it every 2 years.

That sort of makes sense. But, aren't they actually weighed, not filled with a certain volume?

I guess since I haven't actually ever weighed my tanks from PropaneTaxi or Home Depot, and only saw the filling station weigh my tanks as they filled them, I really can't compare anything to know for sure.

I don't know if you can still buy a new tank, or if there are places like that gas station on rt. 50, anymore. I suspect these new "value added" middlemen have put all the old middlemen out of business.

Fuck it. I'm just going to start buying hardwood charcoal exclusively. I have an old school weber kettle grill sitting next to my big ass stainless steel gas grill. I actually like the flavor of a good cut of steak cooked over hardwood coals better than on my fancy expensive gas grill. I usually only use it for smoking fish and grass fed steaks, but I think I'll sell my gas grill and use the weber exclusively.

PT's radio jingle is kinda retro.
Sometimes I like it. Sometimes it makes
me want to gouge one of my eyes with a Philip's head.

So, you are a "direct heat" griller. Amature.

I signed up for the service last week, and it was great. So much easier then taking my tank to Home Depot and looking for someone to open the cage.

Price is also the same as HD, so its a no brainer for me going forward.

I also called and confirmed the tank is 17lbs compared to the 15lbs you get at HD.

For burgers? Yes, but I'm not a "massive fire" griller. I know how many coals to use for whatever I'm cooking, and how to arrange them based on what I'm cooking. I try to cook my burgers at about 250 - 300 degrees (not the meat's temp, the temp over the coals. I cook the meat to about 120-130)

If I'm roasting a whole chicken, I put the coals on one side, and the chicken on the opposite side. If I'm cooking salmon, I arrange the coals in a ring around the outside and put the salmon in the middle. Unless I'm using a glaze on the salmon that I want to blacken, then I just cook it right over the coals.

Go to the burke nursery off of west ox. I used to fill tanks there. The weight of the tank is the empty weight. A 17lb tank weighs 17lbs empty. Filled they weigh around 40lbs. The problem these days is the overfill protection devices (OPD). This limits the amount of gas you can actually put into the tank instead of going by weight. But nonetheless when you get your old tank filled at a place such as the burke nursery, you know that it is being filled to capacity and you are getting your money's worth. It costs $20 to get a tank filled at this place.
