McElveen was the commencement speaker at Langley a few years back. Overall he was not bad for that commencement.

However, I expect the McElveen is now starting to push his agenda into any of the commencement speeches. This should not be happening and would be a rather sad state if McElveen is starting to intertwine things about the school names, inclusion policies and so forth into commencement speeches that should be for and about kids graduating from High School.

Our graduation, Annandale, is tonight. I kept asking my son if he knew who the speaker was going to be, not on the AHS website, etc. So, I'm assuming its going to be some flake.

When I was at TJ, news anchors, reporters, etc. were popular as graduation speakers. I can't image what hell that would be if they were selected as speakers. But at least it wasn't a surprise for us, we knew who the speaker was going to be...

On the bright side at least the end of FCPS is in sight for our family -- except for the real estate taxes. Thank GOD.

Talked to a parent who was at the Annandale grad ceremony, and who was still somewhat burned out from the all night grad party afterwards. Her assessment was as follows:

When Ryan was introduced there was extremely loud cheering from the student body, and the response was equally as strong at the end. He seems to have been a popular choice for a large number of the graduates. The content of the speech and the way it was delivered seemed to be more oriented towards the graduates than to the adults, so parts of it came across as lame to some of the parents. I did not hear anything about swearing so perhaps blanche is simply sensitive about language that is part of the high school vernacular. (Also blanche do you expect us to believe that given what Annandale is, you only now had a reason to appologize to your son for sending him there?) The Adelles joke did bomb. The Trump comment was minimal and went over well with most of those there. There was some negative feedback on this from a few conservative parents at the party. Otherwise party politics were not a big part of the speech, although Ryan's personal history in politics was.

Over the years I have been at a number of graduations where local or national politicians gave the commencement address. Politics have either directly or indirectly been a prominant feature of most of those addresses. If you don't want politics in a commencement speech, then do not have a politician or a political commentator as your commencement speaker.

Bill I agree with part of what you say however Mr. McElveen is not a politician , he's a school Board member. As such the school board members and teachers should teach and speak objectively with students and not insert their personal politics.

My thoughts are I don't want my children indoctrinated by a teachers position and they are very influential in a students life.

I was there and it was disgusting to hear this jerk speak. His speech spoke a lot about bullying yet there he was up on stage openly mocking anyone who disagreed with him. No one booed him as we tried to respect his time on stage. He had no respect whatsoever and made an ass out of himself by renaming the school Kanye West Highschool to use one example. To think he thought it was okay to demean the name of the high school on these kids diplomas. Diplomas they should be proud of and were made out to be insults. He made multiple references to slavery and Trump building a wall around the arena. He said R.E. Lee would have called it an emancipation instead of graduation.

His high points in being a school board member were hugging a transgender kid whom he helped allow to walk across the stage in his choice of clothing, an illegal immigrant (his words) graduating, and some other pillar of liberal causes.

I am so happy my step-son is out of school.

I wish there were some kind of video of his speech.

My son graduated from Lee and my jaw about hit the floor during Ryan's commencement address. It was very political and filled with the talking points of social justice warriors.

He talked about how diverse the class was then said it was good Trump was too busy to attend because he'd likely be building a wall around the arena to keep them all in. He then mentioned something about our "first woman president" clearly alluding to his love for Hillary. For transparency, I am not a Trump supporter and I still found the comment to be extremely tacky.

He bashed the school being named after an "oppressive figure", and that in keeping with the trend of renaming buildings, he hoped they'd rename the school. He then joked that he'd change the name to Kanye West High (because he's such a positive figure, right?) After that he told them that it's a bad thing their diplomas will have Robert E. Lee's name on it for the rest of their lives.

Some of the self-deprecating humor was funny, but it was very clear which side of the political aisle he's on. It was no surprise to me when I Googled him afterward and read that he previously worked for the Clinton Foundation, and received an award from Nancy Pelosi.

He did not receive a standing ovation. People clapped and maybe a few stood, but not nearly enough people to say he received a standing ovation.

I was pretty disgusted by the address. I feel as though there are so many things to talk about to students entering into adulthood, none of which involve politics. It was very disappointing and uninspiring.

The other reason the kids all know who him is due to the Snow Day Tweets he sends out before FCPS updates their web sit. Apparently his father was a long time teacher, might have even worked for the school board??? and he gets inside scoop on school closings, so ALL the kids follow him on Twitter to know when schools will be delayed or closed.

If FCPS would tweet useful info, maybe the kids would follow FCPS rather than McElveen.

It is insulating and in VERY poor taste to mock the fact that the graduates have Lee High School on their diploma. How many of these kids walked out thinking they had done something wrong?? The crap about Trump and the wall, SO many idiots have NO idea that about 25% of the Southern border along the borer already has a wall. In many place the wall it insufficient, in other places the wall is not enough without patrols and surveillance.

Between the ignorant/lazy/biased press and the sheepeople that follow the fools in front to them, many in the US do not think there is currently a wall along any part of the Southern border!

About 2000 miles of border and currently about 500 miles of wall. We need both physical barrier and strong patrols along the Southern border. What is wrong with keeping people from sneaking in and smuggling things into the US?

This is the Fairfax way, expect someone else to do something you do not want to do!

Why not get some of the Channel 7 News reporters that are SO interested in FCPS and FOIA. They can track down the video company that recorded the commencement and pay the $20 and get the DVD. A video is FAR better than a copy of a speech because I would bet Ryan deviated from the written speech quite a bit!

If you are that opposed to him, the solution is simple. Run better candidates for school board in the next election and get out and vote.

Here's the math. There are over 640,000 registered voters in Fairfax County. In School Board elections the top three vote getters among at large candidates are elected. Despite the campaign against him, in 2015 McElveen got 83,000 votes. That was less than 13% of the total registered voters, but still was enough to put him second among the at large candidates and 3,000 votes ahead of Republican Hough who came in third. It was also roughly 9,000 votes more than his next two challengers (one Republican and one Democrat). If Hough had gotten 4,000 more votes and another candidate, Republican or Democrat, had pulled 84,000 votes, McElveen would be gone. McElveen won because Republicans couldn't find at least two candidates who could get 13.5% of the registered voters.

Before you start bloviating about how Fairfax is a cesspool of liberalism, consider this. In 2012 Romney and Allen both got over 200,000 votes in Fairfax County. In 2013 Cuccinelli got 110,000 votes in Fairfax, with Republican candidates for Lt. Gov. and Attorney Gen also getting more than 100,00 votes. In 2014 Gillespie got over 120,000 votes from Fairfax and Republican House candidates got over 130,000. Your own people didn't turn out and vote in 2015.

AGAIN?!?! McElveen left the stage last night during graduation to TAKE A PHONE CALL. Now, who calls him out of that kind of thing? If he's too important to be completely there then he's not available to be on the stage at the ceremony in the first place. Narcissist. Raging narcissist.

That does not mean they don't have an interest in the outcome of the election. 50% plus of every real estate tax dollar collected is being spent on the school system. If a family member is in the hospital or even passes away while on stage, you cannot do anything about it anyway.

Either do not show up for the speech or commit to it and deal with personal matters afterwards.

Maybe the phone call thing was part of the speech/performance?

That usually works the other way around -- a liberal vandalizes the personal property of someone he/she disagrees with. If I supported Trump (NOT) there is no way in hell I'd put a bumpersticker on my car announcing my view

Actually, that makes sense considering the rest of his act. He was validating the students' attachment to their devices. Interesting. Someone should have called the men in white coats while he was exhibiting these signs of lunacy on stage. They could have carried him away and that would be that.
