NATIONAL NIGHT OUT 2009
America’s Night Out Against Crime
On Tuesday, August 4, over 180 neighborhoods and communities throughout Fairfax County are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “25th Annual National Night Out” crime and drug prevention event. Between 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. neighbors, friends and families lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside together. Some may simply turn on the lights to their homes. Others will have block parties with pot luck dinners or ice cream socials. Some communities are expecting a handful of residents where others expect more than 200 residents. Police officers visit with as many neighborhood gatherings as possible. The size or type of activity is not the key: rather it is the participation in order to:
•Heighten awareness of crime and drug prevention
•Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts
•Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
•Send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Fairfax County Police Department, will involve more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, Washington D.C., U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, more than 37 million people are expected to participate in ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime’ this year. NNO 2009 is once again being supported in part by the Target Corporation and the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.
