There are people who are not Costco members? How shocking! :)
I get my gas at Costco regularly and there are a LOT of people who
are non-members. They just "ask" the drivers waiting in line behind
them to swipe their membership cards.
However, some Costco gas stations aren't that much cheaper than nearby
gas stationns these days. A difference of 1 or 2 pennies per gallson isn't
enough to make me drive the extra 2 miles to get gas from Costco.
In fact, on Tuesdays, the Sunoco near me gives a 6-cent discount per gallon
of premium... making it actually 3 cents per gallon cheaper than Costco's
premium gas.
Lately a lot of the stuff that Costco sells cost more than
the same stuff you get at Giant(groceries) and BestBuy(electronics).
My problem with them is the lines, the costco in sterling is the only one I know of with gas (and have easy access to), and the lines are always long as a motherfucker during the day, and since costco's hours suck, they are closed by the time I can go anyway.
Not that it matters for me, I work graveyard shift at a noc and my commute is ten miles in a straight line down 28, going against rush hour. I fill my tank once every two weeks and I am good.
I stopped using costco for groceries because the selection sucks and the place always seems full of wide-eyed foreigners figuring out how to maneuver their cart properly, and never succeeding. The electronics deals there have not been good for more than ten years... they just can't do the volume to justify discounting at that level. Not to mention they have a horrible reputation for service on those items.
I usually go over to woodbridge, gas is usually 9 cents or so cheaper. There's a mobil by the 95 and Jeff Davis Highway that usually has the cheapest in that area.
Stuff in city of Manassas or PW county on Liberia has cheap gas. I used to go to the BP just over the Rt 29 bull run bridge, but a lot of forign people started going there and they cranked up prices and there's always a line.
There's a Conoco gas station on 123 Ox road in Lorton which almost always has the cheapest gas in the area - 93 Premium was $2.99 on Friday. I drive there daily, seems like Wed and Thu are the cheapest days there.
As for Costco, I've discovered that their pump may not check whether your membership is current. This happened to me in Sterling - I've purchased gas ok and then went to do some shopping and at checkout it turned out my membership had expired. I've asked cashier if it was correct since I was able to buy gas 5 mins before, and she said their pumps don't check for expiration. YMMV of course.
Lee Highway in Arlington has six or seven stations within spitting distance of each other. The generic-brand station is $2.54 at the moment (the one at the corner of Lee Highway and Illinois St).
