This afternoon, around 1:30 p.m. officers were called to the 5800 block of Cameron Run Terrace at Riverside Park Swimming Pool, in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County, for a report of a 20 year old life-guard experiencing emotional distress. Officers attempted to communicate with the subject, using crisis intervention training techniques; however, the man continued to ignore the officer’s attempted communication.

The pool was evacuated and officers continued to attempt to communicate with him but he instead jumped in the pool, swam, exited the pool, and began talking out loud. The man only spoke Polish and a Polish-speaking officer was summoned to the scene. This officer continued to attempt communication to no avail. The distressed man then jumped back into the pool and sank to the bottom at which point another lifeguard along with the assistance of the officers were able to bring the man out of the water. The man was unresponsive when he was taken out of the pool. Fire and Rescue personnel assisted the man and after regaining consciousness, he became combative. He was taken into custody for his own protection and transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital in a non-life-threatening condition where he will be evaluated.

Somehow it's cheaper to fly a summer lifeguard in from halfway around the world, find temp housing for them....all because there is not ONE teenager willing to learn CPR and pass a lifeguard training course? That seems beyond ridiculous and I can't see how such logic benefits anyone.

There aren't many jobs (or training classes) that you can succeed in whilst constantly texting or playing on FB or Instagram. And believe me, most early 20 somethings would rather face criminal charges than hand over the smart phone.

Several years ago a Polish teenager got a job working as a lifeguard at a swimming pool in PG County. He asked a typical PG County thug at the pool to show a pool pass to indicate that he had right to be there, and the thug pulled out a pistol and knocked out most of the kid's front teeth with it. The kid was sent back home minus his teeth.

Quite a welcome to America...

If i was a life guard for 20 years I'd be going crazy too. That's a long time.

Our pool has lifeguards that are all local kids who grew up at the pool every summer. That's the way I did it growing up and I assumed most pools did it this way as well. I'd never heard of the importation of lifeguards until I heard about this story.

The kids in these apartment pools are monsters. They provoke and taunt these young international lifeguards who don't speak any English. They push them until the life guards show them what they're made of.

Businesses likely benefit from using the int'l companies in bypassing liabilities and the high cost of insurance against liability claims. The foreign kids are probably under paid or just slaves. Who knows? No one cares about them. Everyone hates them.

A whole pool full of niglets would drive anybody crazy.

They are not paying locals 12.50 btw ( they are both paid minimum wages). Where they make the money is in rent, uniforms, training, etc. Many of these pool companies own properties that they shove a dozen foreigners in and then charge each of them hundreds of dollars a month for. They also have to use the company's life guard shirts ($20) and lifeguard swimsuits ($80). They also have to pay for the training and certification ($350). All of these expenses are deducted from their paychecks. If these foreigners were smart they'd go for the jobs in Ocean City on the boardwalk...at least they'd have fun. I also knew a Ukrainian lifeguard who told me she paid thousands just to get the chance to come over here.

Of course, what we don't see is if (it sounds like it based on the person videoing this event and narrating, saying that he's been down there a long time THIS TIME) he may have already went into the water, at least, once before this video was taken.

In any event, that's the first time I've ever seen someone almost drown AND it was at his own doing. Stupid is as stupid does. I guess if you're going to take your life into your own hands you better make sure that you're ready to die. This guy got lucky!

Yeah,in the video the guy appears to be weirdly calm and surrounded by cops until he quietly goes back into the water. Obviously the cops were called there for a reason so he must have been going nuts at some point. But looking at the video I just don't see why they didn't grab the guy before he went back into the water.

And then when he stayed down for so long. Yikes. You could see that the other lifeguard was getting nervous and wanted to go in after him but was waiting for the o.k. to do it. Then when that lifeguard saw the cops getting ready to go in he just went and got him. When they saw how purple the guy's face is that is when the officers jumped in to help bring him out of the water. Crazy.

I don't think that they were that worried because drowning yourself like that is not even that easy. Your reflexes kick in and if you can swim you come up for air. This guy didn't do that. And apparently the officers underestimated just how long he had been down there and didn't want to risk trying to rescue him only to have him grab a hold of one of them and drown them....this guy was the swimmer after all.

Local kids cannot pass the physical requirements needed...but they could play lifeguard on a game console like a champ, and then tell you how they feel about it!

Nah. They aren't all like that. I've seen them swim lap after lap at swim team practice and at meets and then at the beach they'll go swimming in the ocean like dolphins. And ride their bikes. And jog. And play ball.

Lots of local kids are in pretty decent shape - both mentally and physically.
