Joe Montana, yes, Theisman, no. See the difference there?

You got me curious. So I did check out his stats. No. He is not a HOF candidate. Sorry. He was a good QB. That is all.

No, Theismann doesn't belong. But then, neither does Warren Moon, who skated in. Moon was lucky to play in the pass-happy AFC while Theismann played in the grind-it-out NFC. And Theismann was just another slightly above average white QB while Moon was an average black QB. But being black was all Moon needed.

The Hogs have a better claim to be in the HOF than Theisman.

Yeah, they did a hell of a job keeping LT off Theisman's ass!

But Joe Namath should be in, right?

+1

You clearly are new to this forum. You are far too rational.

Even the best offensive line will occasionally fail, and the injury that JT suffered from Taylor is generally considered a fluke. However if you want to define the performance of the Redskin offensive line by that play, then let's disect it.

Normally the Redskins would have put their left tackle Jacoby on Taylor. However Jacoby was not playing that day. If Taylor blitzed inside it was the responsibility of the replacement left tackle to pick him up. If Taylor went wide though it was the responsibility of the tight end. The Redskins called a flea flicker. The Giants chose to blitz two linebackers. Neither linebacker was fooled by the flea flicker. With the three interior linemen and Riggins selling the flea flicker and the right tackle dealing with the Giant's defensive end there wasn't anyone to block the linebacker blitzing in from the right. Taylor went wide which meant he was going up against the tight end rather than the Redskins left tackle. Because of the time used up in the flea flicker and avoiding the blitzing linebacker from the right Theismann had the ball 7-8 seconds after the snap when Taylor made it around the tight end and reached Theismann.

So in short, wrong play that took too long to develop, substitute players, and even so Taylor only beat an honorary hog.

Hell no, I benched the bastard and only put him in when I needed a punt returner. I think it was when Herb MulKey got hurt. I benched that Jurgensen SOB as well.

Theisman continually had the ability to throw a ball long down field to a runner running at top speed - and would sometimes incredibly reach up with one long arm and have the ball in his hand* and while running - running for a touchdown.

(* Art Monk i think)

the receiver would have a guard running just a couple feet behind hoping to prevent a reception - but a ball placed so exactly as a runner could merely put up a hand and keep running: cannot be stopped

you'd just clap seeing this once or a few times. they did it on a regular basis it was just incredible. (it also was not the only sucessful play they had)

as well - Joe ran the ball enough to get injured quite a few times - to prevent the opposing team from arranging their men too heavily on man-to-man, thus keeping the other team necessarily spread out (since unprotected, joe would always make some yards)

riggins too - at first i thought he was making progress through weak defenses. but no - he was shaming the best defensive lines - and doing it on a regular basis depsite the other team weakining their defense to man-to-man and even double man riggins.

I was excited to see these days - but didn't understand when i was watching that i'd never see a replacement quarterback (or receivers too maybe) who would do the same things again in a lietime (throwing a long pass downfield so exactly that a an olympic speed runner would not have to stop - meaning a sure touchdown)
