How do FFX Station Residents.....
Posted by: HeatherH ()

So, I know that talking about money among those who have it is gauche so I am asking in an anonymous forum. However, my parents came to town this weekend and driving to Clifton, they got lost off Burke Station Road and drove around Clifton Road, Chapel Road, Wolf Shoals Road, etc. When they got to dinner, dad was like "What do these people DO that they can afford these homes?" I live in FFX Station in a small home I bought in 1991 and it occurred to me that I never really thought about it or my neighbors who keep to themselves. So, I was wondering "How do FFX Station residents come by the money to buy these beautiful homes?"

They were especially wowed by this big white lit up home, driving out of FFX Station on Clifton Road right around where the road turns into Burke Station Road. It is on the right, all lit up and looks like the White House or an Embassy. What is THAT all about?

So, good people of FFX Underground, if you live in FFX Station, or grew up in FFX Station or can direct me to a FFX career data census type survey by zip code or something, can you help me out with this question? I hate having unanswered questions running about in my head! ;) THX!

There are two questions here--how did those people get their money, and who would want to be associated with a Greek Revival-Tudor-Tuscan Palazzo anyway? There is a lot of money around. Tech, construction, lobbying, lawyering, all contribute to the recession-proof economy. Also, nothing says the money was made here. Gulf money can show up anywhere, and some ruling families have big houses scattered here and there so they don't have to rent when they come to town on business or shopping trips. As for the monstrosity factor, as the saying goes, there's no accounting for taste.

It would never occur to a liberal, but they may have earned it. Some people have the balls to start a business and actually do something productive. Or they may be trust-fund liberals living off the work of their ancestors.

If you look in the real estate section where homes are purchased, you will see names that you cannot pronounce.

The American Dream is over.
The immagrant dream is just beginning.

Overall FFX Station is not so expensive, there are a few of the larger houses close to or over 2M, however, most are in the $750k-$1.5M range.

Doctors, Lawyers, Lobbyist, Business Owners, Federal Employees can all afford these houses. Some cannot afford these houses but live there with very little financial cushion.

The problem with FFX Station IMHO it is in the middle of no where. Sux to get to DC, Tysons, Falls Church, Fairview Park.

I guess if you work in Springfield or Annandale is might be convenient.

Schools are ok I guess.

Here is and example of what you get for $1M, no bushes on 5 acres!

I live in Clifton. Probably in one of "those homes" you refer to.

I work on Wall Street and many of my neighbors are contractors of some sort, with a few lawyers sprinkled in.

there's a sprinkling of money here and there as pointed out in other posts. for most, it's credit to keep up with the Joneses. just about all of that 111K per household goes to service debt and cover taxes.

I work, and earn my money. I also have other income, besides my 9-5, or whatever hours I choose.

FWIW, I worked at Fairview Park years ago, and it only took 22 minutes to get there. Easy commute.

I live in Fairfax Station. My commute to Alexandria is not bad at all. 35 minutes or so, most days. There's some big mansions here, but mostly there are a lot of pretty normal houses - 3,4 bedrooms, 4000 s.f., $700,000. Yeah, that's a lot, but not compared to a lot of areas around here.

Per Census Quick Facts, median household income in Fairfax Station is about $164,000 per year. That's a whole lot more than in some decaying shithole inner suburbs, but it's not at all out of line with what goes on along the pleasant and prosperous swath of 123 from the Potomac all the way to the Occoquan.

Too bad you can't afford to live in the better parts.

Many of the $1 mill + homes are constructed out of European stucco which is like a big sponge resulting in rotted wood. They can't sell them.

LOL! Head on over to the Vienna Inn and get some gravy-fries to go with that biggie-sized order of Envy & Butthurt. Your station in life is to live in the dumps. Wallow in the inferiority, dude. It's what defines you.

Stucco is installed by any reputable builder in at least three layers over a double-layer moisture barrier with special door and window sealers assuring that any water collected will drain down and out before ever reaching the framing. As with other exterior surfaces, outer layers of waterproofing paint or sealant will help guard further against leakage. Stucco is a tough, durable, effective, and in many places, popular product that has been used successfully for decades. Your claims above are simply nonsense.

I used to live in Fairfax Station before retiring and leaving the area. We bought our Fx Stn home in 1985. Paid a tad under $200k for it. Sold it 2006 for $1.2M.

Fairfax Station has many wonderful starter homes. We lived there until we could afford Great Falls.

Why would I want to see the over-crowded, down-scale, Culmore-ish section of 123?

Culmore, as we all know, is approximately adjacent to and would be all but indistinguishable from Falls Church City were it not for the near 40-year presence of the Peking Gourmet Inn, an upscale Chinese eatery in the Culmore Shopping Center that prepares and serves what may very well be the best Peking Duck anywhere in the DC Metro area. Falls Church City of course has no sort of comparable restaurant at all. Heck, even the likes of Burger King and Long John Silver's recently closed down there. The place is just an empty tasteless wasteland.

Both the man and the female married paychecks there. In many townhome communities, you will find women who married a paycheck, in Fairfax Station, they both did.

Don't discount those that won the housing lottery of the late 90s/early 2000s. Yes lot of people earning big incomes. But if you were middle class and saw your home double, triple in value you're sitting pretty now. Harder for middle class now that came in after the housing bubble that are trying to upgrade their living situation. That applies to most of No.VA.

Still haunted by the ghosts of posters past. Such a weak mind. No wonder you can't afford to live anywhere but next door to Culmore.

Most highly successful couples become highly successful long after they become married. Smart guy meets smart gal. They team up. They each pursue a career. They move up their professional ladders. They end up calling all the shots -- eventually, not immediately.

What a cry-baby, It has never been easy to buy a house. Young people have always had to work hard, scrimp, and save in order to be able to buy into the dream. It has always been a scary thing over the early going. If you have been shut out of the current show, man up. It's your own fault, not anyone's from all those decades ago.
