Worst in and out parking for a business in Fairfax County that just isn't worth the hassle?
Posted by: Survey Says ()

My vote goes to Home Depot in Merrifield with a close 2nd to Home Depot in Price Club Plaza. Getting in and out of these places just isn't worth the hassle. Why hasn't a developer figured a convenient one way in and one way out method of parking yet? If it isn't a car you're going to hit, it is a person!

Let's say you. What businesses do you dread visiting in the area due to parking?

Lots of home depots seem to have this problem. I hate the one near Springfield mall. The adjacent shops are also a pain to get in and out.

Also getting out of the Bradlick shopping center to go east on Braddock can be a nightmare at times. Hear they are allowing the little crummy house across the street to be rezoned/bulldozed to make way for a Mooslim funeral home. That'll make traffic there even worse.

Check out the Target in Herndon where the parkway crosses Sunset Hills. It's freaking genius:

https://www.google.com/maps/@38.9543967,-77.3687979,129m/data=!3m1!1e3

Entering traffic has a couple of ways into the lot with the first entrance heavily favored, but exiting traffic is all routed to the south edge of the lot because of the median on the entrance road.

As for the Price Club Home Depot, never use the eastern entrance to leave the parking lot. If you are picking up a lot of shit and need to park in front of the store, then drive around the building to get out. There is always a path through the back alley because they take deliveries. If staff are working their forklifts, it's never blocked for more than a few minutes at a time.

Just forget about Merrifield Home Depot. That garage is a nightmare.

For the Springfield Mall Home Depot, enter where the Borders used to be. If you aren't buying a lot of shit, then just park in the lower level of the garage and walk up the metal staircase.

If you are getting a lot of stuff, then drive around the back to get to the entrance level and park in the southwest corner--there are usually spots there. Leave the same way you came in. There's an all-way stop sign at the entrance road. I have rarely been stranded there for a second light while it's taken me up to three light cycles to get out while leaving from the Home Depot entrance.

I remember the night 40+ years ago that Fairfax Surf Shop caught fire. That is how the house lost most of it's second floor.

7 Corners and Baileys Corner have heavy traffic but the shopping areas are easy to get in and out of. The REI is very simple in and out. Sometimes hard to find a spot, but that would be a different topic.

Plaza America is no treat. I don't have a problem with Lowes in Chantilly, personally.

I do wonder about the thought process of some of the folks who designed these lots. I mean, Fairfax Wegmans is lousy, but was clearly a compromise based on the weird access to the property. Plaza America has the parking laid out so weirdly that it makes things 100x worse than it needs to be!

I know this is about Fairfax County - BUT

There is a strip shopping center in Bealeton, Virginia at the corner of RT28 and RT17 that is almost impossible to get in, and is like the hedge maze from the movie The Shining to get out of.

Stores are boxed in by concrete islands. There is 1 exit that is a driving skills exercise to get through.

This place designed by a drunken inbred.

Landmark Plaza is a pain in the ass. The secret is to go out the back way and come out on Lincolnia Rd.

Tysons Walmart - only one way in and out of lot. Frequent backups.

Tysons I (AMC, Food Court) - Usually park on east side, closest to Beltway, so we can take elevator from parking lot to 6th floor bridge over to Food Court. This used to be good parking but became difficult when Mall dedicated half of the spaces on lower floors of garage to valet parking, even though most of those spaces remain vacant at all times.

There's a strip of parking just west of the Total Wine. If you park there, you can get in and out on Pickett just north of the light that's usually backed up right in front of Total Wine.

There is also an alley that goes around that entire center. If you need to go any direction other than north on Pickett, then make the first u-turn. It beats the hell out of sitting at that light in front of Total Wine for two or more changes.

Getting in and out of Shoppers Food Warehouse in Herndon is a cluster. Doesn't matter if you exit on Sunrise Valley or Centreville Road. Just one giant cluster and causes me to grocery shop elsewhere. Too many businesses in that shopping center with that awful parking lot: Ned Devine's, Gold's, Chuck E Cheese, McDonald's and so on.

Trader Joes Centreville isn't that bad. It seems that everyone just wants to absolutely park as close a possible. If you park back a couple of rows, even though you have to walk a bit (heaven forbid!) it makes up for the exasperation of trying to park in the first row. It's also easier to get out as you have completely avoided the mess up close to the store.
