Is a car dealership Processing Fee of $595.00 legal?
Posted by: Car Shopping Fool ()

I am shopping for a car, and I keep running into this outrageous Processing Fee issue. Some fees are as low a $395.00 -The most I have seen is $699.00

Is this fee legal?

How can I get around paying all of this money for doing paperwork to sell me a car?

You

a - tell them to take the processing fee of the cars price
b - tell them to fuck off, you're not paying the fee or you're walking away

don't get too attached, you have to be ready to walk away at any time. Those slimy bastards will waive the fee after speaking to their "managers" 10 times.

Tesla can't take over the stealership business model soon enough.

Of course it's legal. Why wouldn't it be?

There's this secret technique, used by car buyers the world over, and I'm going to share it with you FOR FREE!

Negotiate.

When you get into "the room" with the closer (AKA, Finance Manager), tell 'em you don't want to pay their bullshit "doc" fee and won't buy the car if they don't take it off.

If they refuse, walk away. Literally. If they know you're a serious buyer, and all that's standing in the way of making a sale is their bullshit fee, the salesman or Finance Manager will call you back into the room and make the deal. Every. Time.

Yes it is legal here. I've been told that some states do cap the fee.

The way to get around it is to negotiate an "out the door" price. You really don't care how much of what you pay is allocated to the car itself, how much is for taxes and how much is for dealer fees. All you should care about is what you write the check for. So throw it back on them to allocate the price.

I was told by one dealer the fee was required, and it was so that the office staff could get paid for their very hard work.

A dealer is required to charge the same processing fee to every customer. So, if the dealer sets their processing fee at $500, everyone who buys a car from that dealer has to pay the same $500 whether they're buying a used Kia or a high-end Mercedes.

They can charge you whatever fee they want. The fee basically covers their overhead and gives them a fixed per-unit profit, so they make a certain amount of money regardless of how much they sell any particular car for.

Since the fee is not negotiable, decide on the "out-the-door" price you want to pay and include the fee in your negotiation to get that price. Begin your negotiation with "What's the out-the-door price on this?"

If the dealer doesn't want to include the fee in the negotiation, then you walk. Pure and simple.

If you're really offended by the idea of a dealer's fee, buy your car in Maryland. Their doc fees are limited by law to $300.

Bill N. has it right. Start out by making it plain that you are negotiating for the bottom line. This isn't a strange concept for them. It isn't unusual for people to do this. They know how to do it. Go to a different dealer if they act like they can't do it this way. The negotiated price will be higher to compensate, but at least you shouldn't get surprised when you go to the business office.

They may not want to include actual taxes and tag fees that go to the government, but they should be able to tell you what they are before you get to the business office.

They will have to go to their manager for approval at least once. Remind them that you are negotiating for the bottom line. This going to their manager is a negotiating ploy. You know damn well that they know what their manager will or won't approve. Be prepared to walk.

When you do go to the business office, be prepared to say "no" a lot. And be prepared to walk. Refuse to pay extra for extras that they suddenly discover that this car has (undercoat, that terrible clear coat stuff they want to put on the paint). As always, be prepared to walk.

there is an "excess profit law" in the USA but it is really the "loan sharking law"

(1) excess profit must be to such an ammount it offends the judge
being that he's probably "in on it" (political businesses)
he's unlikely to be shocked

(2) more that you could use except not in your situation in the USA is the
"loan shark law" which is something like %600 interest

rate aside, their is a set legal rate and beyond it is illegal and loan
sharking even if your not italian

infact fx co gov did that to me (they called it "late fees" - i said
i wasnt late it was their fault - and the so called loan was never
valid loan from me to them to begin with - so i have them on 3 counts)

Thank you for the good info, and the good advise. I see where being willing to walk away from any car/deal is very important.

So as I read the replies, the fee is just another way dealers pad their bottom line.

Thanks again.

While I know I am probably getting raped anyway, that is why I like the Carmax concept. Do I have to negotiate when I go to Lowes to by a washer and dryer? Do I have to negotiate when I go buy a new refrigerator? Why is buying a car such a god damn hassle? It's the only industry that is like that. Well, other than roofers, siding installers, fence builders..... I hate all of it.

You forgot doctors and lawyers. Show me a construction job of any size where there weren't some extras. Then there are those ads for products with rebates, and the price in the big print is the post rebate price. Don't forget the stores where the same stuff is on sale half of the month or that offer you a 25% discount with a coupon.

Its all a bunch of marketing BS. Its more important for some people to have the illusion that they got a good deal than it is for them to buy it at a decent price. Dealer offers you a low price on the car you want to buy and then piles on the fees. Or he gives you a great trade in price on your old vehicle but sells you the car at list.

WRONG. THAT'S A LIE BY G2.

PRESSURE SALES TACTICS, ALSO "LOW BALLING", AND OTHER TACTICS WERE MADE ILLEGAL, telling the customer "the deal with disappear if they don't do it now", illegal.

However - there is a ?day sales law now so you can certainly return the car get all your money back if you've changed your mind. If they say no: CALL THE POLICE FILE A CRIMINAL REPORT, then take your report number and see the clerk at the courthouse.

They were not illegal in, say, the 1950's, but Congress did pass many Consumer Laws since then.

they made pressure sales tactics illegal but couldn't enforce it, so instead they turned to "you can return the car after a pressure sale for a full refund", as a catch all so they wouldn't have to enforce allot of etiquette rules with difficult to handle cross-testimony and lying salesman

Gerrymanderer2 (G2, the OP original poster or spammer just above, perhaps both) posts several lies on ffu daily - many think he's a fx co gov worker who is getting paid to do it for false DNC democrat "advertising". He floods ffu with useless posts to bump down major news, demoralize americans. G2 posts fecal matter, mutilated bodies, child porn, foreign drug ads and sneaker ads, tells people to kill themselves and government should seize them and put them on psych pills in prison without a trial - decided by DNC democrats gov workers, promotes kangaroo courthouse trials, gives anti-religious rants, gives satanic ritual rants, posts black males with large dicks on white young females, portends white low birth rate and fall of USA whites, suggestive of food tampering/poisoning to solve the white problem, and anything possible to demoralize any americans on ffu - all of which are fake news he never responds to proofs it is fake. (perhaps g2 is a chinese prisoner or isis member - but definitely knowledgeable of fx co gov from the inside at times). The website operator has told him "not to post or return" (in an existing post by the sysop): not because of a political leaning but for continual illegal and gross spam along with messages that are only to demoralize if not kill others. G2 plays at financial terrorism as well; continually reporting fake and false financial data. G2 fakes emergency pleas to deaden the real response to any real one - like a devil. G2 continually spams FFU - which all users complain of: it is a real DoS attack - the attacks are not just topic bumps but designed to inject key words to kill ffu and google search results. G2 continually promotes drug use, alcoholic experimentation, and tries to convince members to meet hookers using photos from the 1990's (i doubt any that did are not arrested or dead). G2 continually posts racist posts and gay posts egging others to comment - then attacks who does - AND RECORDS IT (likely for political extortion). G2 and dems MONITOR AND RECORD* "conservatives who blast out these democrat lies and illegal abuse of telephone privilege (sometimes in a raw manner, being so jaded by the job)" (users who object to G2's actions listed so far). One ffu member discovered a south american country recording FFU databasing all posts in a non-chat database format - and when questioned - another member quickly said it was all coincidence and that this was done everywhere in the world on all sites: WHICH IS A LIE. Not all countries record the every word of what fairfaxians say on blogs. Extortion is also mentioned by G2. And the idea he's fishing for comments he can use against anyone who'd run for office is "just assume he's in that business" - and i've warned others that is what he fishes for - excuses to attack conservatives and or to extort them.

SOME POSTERS ON FFU FEEL G2 IS A JOKER: I ASSURE YOU THE ABOVE COMPLAINTS ARE GENUINELY A THREAT TO ONLOOKERS (THE UN-INTIATED), NON-DEMOCRATS, AND TO ANYONE STATING THAT LAWS SHOULD BE IMPOSED ON DEMOCRATS EQUALLY AS DEMOCRATS IMPOSE THEM ON OTHERS: MONEY

LEGAL NOTICE: DEMOCRATS HAVE `SWATTED' THE HOMES OF SOME FFU POSTS WHO REFUTE G2 AND CALL DEMS OUT ON THEFT AND LIES - AND EXPOSE THE LAWS THEY COULD BE PROSECUTED FOR BREACH OF TRUST. THAT'S A CONFIRMED WITNESSED FACT. IT IS NO JOKE WHAT G2 IS DOING. HIS CONTINUAL FISHING IS NOT IDLE - THEY ARE TRIGGERED AND ARMED. which i've warned others about since, about 2010 - that G2 is fishing for men to "erase" politically, by any means available to him

G2 has now been wimpering that anti-G2 posts are "unfair" and that users who protest G2 should be blocked, SWATTED (see above), and forced on medications (see above), and that "someone else is G2". However - do not let the vicious foreign attacker fool you into your death our out of your community: G2 has been active since exactly the beginning of 2017 "hillary has already won the election" set of lies and has only DOUBLED spam recently - yes the suicide taunting of others, false information, and all else listed above. He is not wimpering for help he has doubled the spam and vicious attacks (or they, communist/facist using federal money. I pinned him correctly when I began this warning post.

GO BACK TO HELL G2. YOU ARE EXPOSED.

G2 has posted tens of thousand of fake questions he doesn't really want an answer to - either to advertise to some fool they can't get their money back when infact they can

or just to spam FFU to "visually erase" damning news about area democrats
