If you have your own plane it could be done, even with a little Cessna.
They are public airports and you do have the right to use them. You'd have to be rated to fly IFR and make sure your plane is equipped to fly under instrument conditions. You'd also have to go through the headache of filing a flight plan and studying up on all the local waypoints and navaids you'll be directed to use. You'd be in pretty deep shit if air traffic controllers directed you to someplace you can't find it because you don't have the right electronics or just don't know where they're talking about. And bring a wad of cash with you to cover landing fees. Not sure what they'd be, could be over a thousand just to land. Bring money to park too. And have fun with hassle of getting your plane back out. Be prepared to spend a few hours planning your way out and bring money for that too.

If I recall correctly, there was an incident where a plane took off from either DCA or IAD and had to make an emergency landing at the other Washington area airport. This was probably back in the 70's or 80's.

You were the one who also recalled that a movie was made in which the Heart and Hand Restaurant in Clifton was featured.
How do you recall all this stuff?

I spent a good portion of my life in the D.C. area, specifically Springfield and Fairfax Station. 1970 - 2006 when I hauled my ass off to better pastures. And believe me when I tell you, there ARE better pastures than the D.C. Metro area.

I think he said the other day that he moved to Florida.

I imagine that's pretty hectic. All the traffic behind you is doing over 200 knots and you're moving less than 90. I bet you're getting off that runway pronto, and the controllers can't be real happy trying to keep all that traffic separated.

there are actually a few of these on youtube but they're all clips of just the final approach and no audio. would be neat to see one & hear one get vectored in by ATC with full comm audio.

If so, none of them are in Florida. And of course from Arlington to Winchester, NoVa has been becoming increasingly popular as an upscale retirement destination.

Back in the 70's there were operational limits placed on aircraft that were inside the capabilities of their engineered ranges...to combat this, several airlines with west coast bound flights would take off from DCA, land at IAD, before ultimately landing at LAX or whatever the final west coast destination was. I took this route about 15 times and on 2 or 3 occasions, people actually got off at IAD...

This stupid fuck is so fulfilled in his new location that he feels the need to tell us about it every few months. Must be boring in paradise.

Yes we did it once. We booked a flight from Dulles to st Lucia and weren't paying attention and the return flight was to national. The return flight was over booked and they had open seats on a flight going to Dulles an hour later, but dipshit United airlines wanted $150 each ticket to make a change. Inflexible bastards. So two people got bumped and we had to hoof it to Dulles from national to get our car from lt parking. Thats my Dulles to national flight story.

Shut your pie hole, dweeb. I enjoy hearing from those who have the sense and/or ability to leave this dreadful area. It gives me hope that one day I, too, can leave this area and spend my remaining days in a better geographical/cultural area.

When something really terrible happens during your life, it can sometimes be difficult to get it out of your mind. Maybe this is where Petey is.

I've done this. You don't have to be IFR. Landing fees are negligible. However, since 9/11 you can't do it ever again.
