Unique New Store! Hippy/Vintage/New Age/Earthy
Posted by: Katie Luciano ()
Date: July 29, 2009 04:40AM

Hey Everyone!
Thanks Adam for letting me know about this place!
My name is Katie Luciano and I've recently begun renting out a room in a wonderful store called Grateful Gardens, located in Fairfax, Virginia.
I am 22 years old and proud to say I am now a business owner and lucky enough to be doing something I absolutely love. My store (aka room) is called Mission Catnip (can you tell I have a lot of cats?) and I think Mission Catnip is a store many in this area will enjoy.

We sell a huge variety of items.....
lots of handmade jewelry (all jewelry in Mission Catnip is designed by me)
hippy mushroom pendants
vintage clothing, purses, decor
classic rock records
tie dye
jars for storing herbs
herbs
new age books
Marley/Rasta merchandise
60's hippy clothing
candles
incense
body jewelry

PLUS all the great merchandise located in Grateful Gardens. Again, my name is Katie and my room is the 2nd room to your left when you walk in. Trust me it'll stand out! I've put a lot of heart into what we sell and I hope you all are pleased to have a store like this in the area! Beach towns aren't the only ones that need hippy shops!

We are located within Grateful Gardens(purple building) @ 11923 Lee Highway Fairfax, VA 22030!

Come out and support local artists and I truly look forward to hearing from all of you. If you have any questions email me at missioncatnip@gmail.com Thanks again!!

With love and peace
Katie

Just think. Dad the Attorney saved all those years with the hope that little Katie here would go to Harvard. Instead, he gets this. How long before she is at NoVA taking accounting courses?

Yeah, I think it was called "New Rave." Is this not the same place? As I recall; it was a head shop without paraphernalia and sex toys..

Is new rave still there? Is this now the hippy district? Legato/Lee :: Haight/Ashbury

Do you have any good herbs or hydroponic systems? It looks like a major fail. You would attract alot of people if you sold nice bongs, vaporizers, bee line hemp, grinders and other toking tools.

How is this "hippy"?
You have no lava lamps, no blacklight posters, no paisley and tie die banners or shirts and only about 30 records.
This is some new yuppie hippy thing going on here. Obviously you've never met any true hippies from the 60's and 70's, so you may want to rebrand this as more of an eastern meditation equipment store.

With all the trash that is sold around here, it's nice to see a unique store. I think she will be surprised at the number of hippie's in FFX county.

And now for the ceremonial FU bashing ...

I know exactly where this store is. It's been under about 5 different names since I lived near there in the mid 90's. It used to be painted yellow with all kinds of tie-dyed bullshit out on the street. Now it's purple. I always pictured going inside and there would be some dirty, unwashed hippie sitting at the front in a tie dye shirt, no shoes and a rat's nest of a hairdo.

Remember, I'm renting out a room in this store. Grateful Gardens is the rest of the store. And I've noticed people were asking for black light items, if there's a demand, then we'll absolutely sell it. Personally, my house adorns black light and lava lamps galore but unfortunately most want to go to Spencers to pick up black light gear then stop by a small shop. So we will see as the months progress. Appreciate the feedback though.....I am lucky to hear about what the community wants to see. Thanks all.

Either way, if you are all hippies then I'm sure you wouldn't mind stop by to lend some support to a local artist. :) Thanks again for all the feedback, good and bad.

All looks hippie to me:

hippy mushroom pendants
vintage clothing, purses, decor
classic rock records
tie dye
jars for storing herbs
herbs
new age books
Marley/Rasta merchandise
60's hippy clothing
candles
incense
body jewelry

How about some peace signs, wild Greatful Dead fragrances - http://www.asylum.co.uk/2009/07/22/hash-perfume-smells-of-grateful-dead-concerts/,

Oh and some art work signage, not something that it looks like a 5 year old made it.

http://www.hippieshop.com/

Hit up some local Dead Heads and related shows. Like - http://www.transformus.com/

Brand your store with some label so other will see where to get stuff. Maybe some free trinket necklace and of course offer your customers something to come back for.

looks badass.
funny that people are dumb enough to think hippie is all weed and blacklight.

I wouldn't worry about these people Katie, they're the kind of tokers that think they're hippie because they got a tie dye sundress at target. "look, my purse has a peace sign on it! I'm in style! lets smoke a blunt!"

tools.

Appreciate the effort, nova certainly needed a bit of retro.
The store looks awesome!

I'd rather smell like pachouli than that stink they sell at abercrombie.
Don't let the tower stand in your way, a place like this will be insanely popular once the right people know about it!

So tell us all what YOU think hippies are all about. Many of us on this sight were around during the "hippy movement" and probably took part in it. There is a difference between phish heads and 60's and 70's hippies.
Personally, I never met any hippies that used pachouli back in the day. That's reserved for slimy 80's-90's Grateful Dead followers and other groupies.

well the new "hippies" aint all about peace love and patouli

theyre all about the drugz, mayn. so unless you're gonna cater to that demographic than the room store is gonna sink. dont callum herb jar, just callum nug jarz. And sell some straight brimmed new era caps. all the drug kids are piggy backing and parasiting on the scene and destroying whats left of the already rotting sub culture.

i don't know, maybe a lifestyle?
it's not about excessive consumption of drugs because it's cool, getting a lava lamp from target, buying mass-produced imported-from-china blacklight posters at spencers, and going to walmart for printed "tie dye" from child labor workshops...that i do know.

hippie is handmade, local artists, organic farming, doing what you feel is right, love, peace, and movement(s).

perhaps i'm not old enough to be a part of the original "hippy movement," but are 60's, 70's, and phish heads called anything but hippy?
"oh, look at that 60's hippy over there"

From what it looks like, the place has a bit of everything. smoke? stash jars. vintage? clothing and purses. art, jewelry, painted trinkets? might not be the best ever, but someone MADE it. music? classic rock records. decor? looks in line.

an activist is someone who speaks out when nobody else will. i may not be an activist, i may not be the one that opened a hippie store in the middle of my-parents-credit-card NOVA, but this chick is.

I'm going to stop by the store today. I may not buy anything and I may not like anything...but shame on anyone that is not supportive of a local girl trying to provide this for the community.

Thanks for the kind words circus monkey. I think you sound pretty awesome :)
I think the good thing about the products I sell is that they will appeal to different types of people. I want to bring as diverse customers as possible. I think we all can learn from each other. Even if we don't all fit the bill of what a "perfect hippy" is. I don't. And I'm pretty confident to say no one fits that "perfect hippy" ideal. The idea of being a hippy is to go against the norm in some way...branch out...do what makes us happy. Promote calmness and respect of each other. My perfect "hippy" outing is to take my dogs to a park and draw or make jewelry. Others may be different. Whether you are starring at a black light poster wearing tie dye and smoking.......or wearing patchouli and eating organic vegetables..............I'd hope we all same similar ideals. But we will see.

In the wise words of Cat Stevens....
Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
'Cause there's a million things to be
You know that there are

And if you want to live high, live high
And if you want to live low, live low
'Cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are.

Ready set go...let the insults fly.

I'm cool with the store and have no problem with what Katie is doing. I just don't think she should market her section of the store as being hippy related. The term hippy was mostly considered an insult when it was most popularized. It's what parents, cops and other authority figures called anyone with long hair.
Unfortunately, Bobo is part right in that most people today view hippies as total losers, deadheads and sleezballs that would rather douce themselves in pachouli than take a shower. Most don't have any money and it's unlikely that there are enough of them in this area to make your store prosperous.

This isn't really about what a true hippy is or isn't. It's about the questionable marketing technique you've employed in promoting your new business. Already you've seen the divide there is regarding this strategy.

so what is the name for this style/person?
the title of the post was hippy/vintage/new age/earthy...i think that pretty well classifies it as a bit o' everything.

i don't shun the hippie tag people place on me, despite it being a demeaning term for everyone that falls within the crowd this store appeals to. i am not dirty, i am not smelly, i have a good job and wear a tie to work (sometimes).

The first guy had it right. In this economic climate, in the middle of the Capitalist World Capital, there's no way this place will stand a chance. It's niche at best, and the hippy/vintage/new age/earthy community won't be able (or won't be willing) to support it fiscally. Six months, tops.

That said? Sure, good on ya for starting a store, and good luck to you. Just don't be surprised when nobody buys any of your goods and you are forced to quit.

I really appreciate all the concern but trust me I'm not living in a fantasy world. I also find nothing wrong with a positive outlook and not passing on oppurtunities. I know too many people that have passed on dreams for fear of failure. I'm not afraid to fail but I will work my hardest not to.

And in response, yes the records are good ones. We add more every week so there will be something for everyone. I can't remember a definite list right now but let's see.
Rolling stones, Beatles, Cream, Cat Stevens, ELO, Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller Band, John Denver.....I'll update later if you want with a better list.
Don't forget if you visit both Grateful Gardens and my room has records and both have a different assortment that is updated often!

Katie, I think you have a good attitude and stand a chance.

But this stuff about "people going to spencers (or other stores)" is exposing a flaw in your logic behind not carrying certain products. Those people are going to those places to buy products they want (establishing demand), and they know to go to those places because... hold on here... those businesses advertised the products in question.

I'm just saying, if you market correctly, that the "people are more interested in buying that elsewhere" stuff evaporates. You need to let people know they can get that stuff through you... might I also suggest you use blacklights, etc as a "loss leader"... use the established market to get people into your store, by offering (for convenient example) the exact same blacklights CHEAPER than spencers. I would also recommend you have a higher-quality choice available, so people can choose to upgrade when it's right in front of them.

It doesn't have to be blacklights but you need a draw.. something you know people go elsewhere to buy that you can offer cheaper. Then when they get there, they buy all your other stuff at a markup. The fact that stoners are a lot of your clientele should help... they tend to lose track of advanced concepts like frugality when in a shopping situation. On that lone point I will claim expertise.

Giant loses money on soda to get you in the store...

Katie,

Here's your problem: Nothing you sell is sexy.

As others have already pointed out, this area is a shallow, commercial cesspool. The average girl around here does not want to wear a shapeless tie-dye shirt; she wants to wear something that will attract the attention of another yuppie.

Alternatively, she wants something that will make her look better than the other girls she's with, so they'll be like, so super jealous of that cute little top with the sparkly Grateful Dead teddy on it. Then those bitches will go to your store and get something for when they go out with their OTHER friends, so they'll be like, so super jealous of that cute little top with the...

Well, you get the idea. Guaranteed that, throughout this entire cycle, a couple of them are going to have stupid hippie friends that are totally stoked on your vibe, man.

You gotta get 'em with the sexy hook. That's how you'll sell your candles and other hippie shit. There's not exactly a dense hippie population in this area (sorry, but thank God).

Whatever you do, don't start a drum circle. I will personally lead the lynch mob.

GODDAMNIT!

Alright, I'm going to Home Depot tomorrow for a pitchfork and some torch-making materials. Anyone want me to pick something up while I'm there?

Katie,

You would have a HUGE Market at the Beach (VA Beach for instance). Good luck around here, but I would say it's about 50/50 as to whether or not you'll pick up a huge clientele.

At least its not Korean or has illegals standing outside it.

Does it have space for H2 and Navigator parking?

Katie,

You are smart to sublease the space, because it's not nearly the investment or risk. It's also good that you have a store thats complimentary to your host and that your inventory probably didn't set you back tens of thousands. Your location is possibly a really good retail location, it gets tons of motorists past it everyday and since it is old, it can't be that unreasonable.

It's actually not a bad time to go into retail, because rents are down and what you are selling are the kind of things that give the right person a lot of joy for not so much money. A lot of the boutiques in Georgetown got started in the 70's when the economy sucked and rents were low, when things rebounded in the 80's they were behind the 8 ball.

Not crazy about the old hippy stuff, but good luck to you. You sound like you have a great attitude and over 600 people have already seen your post.

Thanks WingNut I appreciate the kind words very much. And yeah, positive attitude doesn't hurt!

Just as another comment to everyone who looks/reads this. We've all seemed to get stuck on the hippy aspect of the store. Which is fine....BUT I also have a lot of my handmade jewelry designs that aren't for a "hippy" necessarily. As well as some pretty cool vintage stuff. But again, thanks for everyone who gave me feedback and suggestions. It is appreciated!
Peace and Love
Katie :)

Ammo is hard to find in this area and there are alot of threads here about it. Hows business did you sell anything yet? I may stop buy to pick up a 420 jar.

Hey there ffxstoner,
Business is actually good. I've sold some of my handmade bigger jewelry pieces as well as some of my crystal pendents and glass blown mushroom pendants. People also seem to like the vintage mushroom stuff!
Of course I'd like it to be better, so if you like the stuff you see grab some business cards and spread the word. It feels good because it seems like everyone who goes in really likes our little room :)
Go check out the jars for sure! I made sure they were perfect for storing herb...all seal...good size. There's one in particular that has "smoke herb" on it that I could see you liking. But I'd be so pleased if you'd check us out.

Don't forget my little store is the second room on the left and check out some of the awesome things Grateful Gardens has too!

And that makes sense about ammo, although I didn't expect it to be hard to find. Someone should pick up that idea for a new store! :)

Love and Peace,
Katie

"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Katie,

Pretty cool spot you have there.
I stopped by yesterday after work and I love the style.

The main store part was a bit retail with the tapestries, sterling silver rings, and tie dye shirts...but your room...wow.
i love it.

I picked up a few of your vinyls (the who, santana, and three dog night in case you're trying to track it =) and I got one of those glass mushroom necklaces for my girl.

good job for sure, your room has such a great feel to it!

i saw a sign posted for it, when are you getting the body jewelry in?

Katie - Are you familiar with that place in Manassas that is similar to yours? I believe it's called DragonSong. I haven't been there in years, but they have a wide selection of glasswares and the owner (who looks strangely enough, like David Crosby) is a pretty chill dude.

Also, we should have body jewelry in by middle of next week! It's some pretty nice stuff too...and I'm keeping it cheap. Probably around $10 for 99% of pieces. Thanks again for the positive feedback! It's nice to know all my hard work is appreciated!!
With Peace,

I know that Xbox modding guy was giving 10% off to FU users.

I say absolutely. That sounds like a great idea and one that I've been actually trying to figure out to do. I'll post details in the next week. I'll be honest, since I'm renting a room out I need to figure out the logistics of a 10% thing. If it would be just my room...or entire store. etc etc. So please just give me a few days to figure that out. But I didn't want you to think I was against the idea. I'd like to start a mailing list as well so I can mail coupons to customers over the next months. Hope this is a sufficient answer. Sorry I can't do more right away. And for those that have visited the store already.......thanks so much. I think as you visit and see my prices you won't feel so hesitant.

Thanks again for feedback.

Peace,
Katie

I think I really would like to meet katie.

"hippie" girls are actually pretty cool. All the jokes about being hairy and smelly, that's bullshit.

My experience has been that they are pretty damn hot, and very open minded.

Open minded is the key word or phrase.

Awesome! Good to see that other hippies are still alive in the Fairfax area! It seems like there are fewer and fewer of us each day!
It sucks that there aren't more open minded, free thinking, free spirited people in this part of town!
I do have to say that I haven't shaved at all in 2 years and my boyfriend loves it. Hair is natural and there's something wrong with a society that can't tolerate natural men and women. It's all because the man wants you to give him money for the razors to shave your legs... it's all about money these days.
beat the man!
haha!
I must drop by this Grateful Gardens place!

How much for a romp behind the store? In this economy, it has to be a regular situation.

I've had a couple of friends try smoking nip and most of them said it didn't do anything. Most people online agree. I had one friend who said he was "tripping balls" on it, but he's a liar more often than not. So, no, you don't get a real buzz from catnip.

Also, thanks for bringing this back up to the front, I really want to check this place out. Are they still open? If so, they've almost beat those 6 month estimates.

So it's been years since I've posted and I'm excited to announce the grand opening of my Etsy online jewelry store!!

http://www.etsy.com/shop/missioncatnip

As you all know, sadly, our store and mother store did not work out. But life is about chances and I enjoy each and every chapter. Jewelry is still a passion for me and I have over 100 pieces to add. Custom orders are always welcome!

I have many different types of jewelry. One of my favorite designs we have is created from river glass found on different hikes in the Potomac River. Some of our pieces date back to the 1800's and the miles of hiking is worth finding such amazing treasures buried beneath the dirt and rock of the Potomac River. The amazing pieces of river glass are then wire wrapped for a one of a kind pendant!
Many necklaces are made from gemstone beads and aim to have an eloquent connection with nature. Materials include malachite, tigers eye, hematite, amethyst, amber and much more!
We even have a glow in the dark/ black light jewelry section. I know so many of you showed so much support over the time we had our store so I am excited to share with you this next chapter. Many new items are listed each day! Also, in honor of our grand opening we will have the entire store 15% off until Halloween. Thanks in advance for all the sales and support!!!
Enjoy!

Peace and Love,
Katie
