Changing the schools name is just one way, we should also give subsidies to descedents of slaves, institute several white slave experiences so white scum like me can experience what it was like and let the black community. The ultimate thing would be to follow my example and let scores of black men have sex with my wife, because of my white guilt and the history of oppression, its only fair

Most of the sources that find a massacre did occur at Fort Pillow in 1864 also agree there is no indication that Forrest either ordered or participated in the massacre. Some of those same sources even indicate Forrest tried to stop the killing. At best Forrest was guilty of failing to control his men in the immediate aftermath of the storming of the fort.

If you are looking to celebrate a Confederate leader who deliberately sought to kill defenseless black soldiers, a better candidate would be Champ Ferguson. In the aftermath of the Battle of Saltville, Ferguson deliberately killed wounded and surrendered black troops. He was subsequently arrested by the Confederates, and after the war was convicted of murder and hung by the U.S. Or we could go with some of our 20th and 21st century racists.

Forrest was an erratic soldier and undisciplined for leadership. His superiors like Bragg and Johnston didn't even want him in their army. The reason he was relegated to stay in the western theater even during critical times. IIRC he was forced out of the service for a few months.

Name it Timothy Munson High honoring the Munson family who were Northern sympathizers and endured the war at the hands of the 37th NY Infantry. I'm sure you know where Munson's Hill is located.

Timothy B. Munson, who as a native New Yorker felt it necessary to seek refuge in Washington. After the Southern army withdrew from the area he suffered numerous deprivations while under the military rule of the Union Army—-and, ironically, the worst were meted out by the poorly disciplined soldiers of the 37th New York Infantry, from Munson’s home state. In a letter to a Washington newspaper Munson cataloged all the deprivations and offenses and closed with the plea, “My God! How long must these things continue? We may well exclaim, Save us from our friends!!!” [9]

Re-name Stuart after Bayard Rustin, the man who taught MLK about non-violent opposition, organized the 1963 march on Washington, and was shunned by the African American community for years because he was gay, and a Quaker.

Rustin was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

That kind of thing happened on both sides. One of John Morgan's last raids into TN, troops were stealing anything that wasnt nailed down from fellow southerners, robbing banks, and extorting money from towns under threat of arson.

Needless to say it didn't help the southern cause in central Tennessee.

You know who else purges historical names, artifacts and monuments from their society? ISIS.

If this mentality snowballs, why stop at schools? Anybody offended at Lee Highway? Let's just clean up Fairfax County entirely and number everything. "Bill Euille (mayor of the city of Alexandria) tells Washington Post City council will review flags, statues, building and street names when it reconvenes in September." Can Fairfax County Board resist following this lead, budget constraints or not?

Why stop at Jeb? If you're going to erase history and anybody associated with slave history we need to purge any schools, streets, statues, districts (Mason for example) with the names… Benjamin Franklin, Ulysses Grant, John Hancock, Patrick Henry, Sam Houston, Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Johnson, Robert E Lee, James Monroe, James K Polk, Zachary Taylor, John Tyler, Martin Van Buren, George Washington, George Mason, James Madison and the villain in the petition, W. T. Woodson. No doubt we'll find others.

Jeb Stuart's not even associated with "slave history". He was a cavalry officer responsible for shooting and killing American soldiers. He did not live, or die, in northern Virginia. He didn't live around here, renounced his US citizenship, and killed Americans. It's not a "slavery" issue.

He also fucked up the Confederate army's advance into Pennsylvania in 1863, and stupidly got killed down near Richmond a year later.

He's not real worthy of commemoration. More like a historical footnote.

Jeb Stuart's not even associated with "slave history?"

That is the whole reason for this petition…that he supported and fought for slavery. Haven't read anything that said we're embarrassed that he was an inferior cavalryman.

Your quote "He was a cavalry officer responsible for shooting and killing American soldiers."

Wow, so the other 2 plus million participants who engaged in the civil war didn't do the same, only Stuart?

Your quote....He did not live, or die, in northern Virginia. He didn't live around here, renounced his US citizenship, and killed Americans.

Really…well here's a history lesson for you.
In fact, J.E.B. Stuart High School is right in the vicinity of Munson Hill, where Col. Stuart moved his troopers following First Manassas and commanded the Confederate position closest to Washington, DC. As explained on a historical marker along Leesburg Pike, within half a mile of the high school, "From his camp, Stuart watched Union observers ascend in balloons to study him. Stuart built 'Quaker cannons' made of logs and had his men march before large campfires to confound the Federals." A massive Confederate flag flown from Munson Hill could be seen in Washington, DC, causing consternation in the Federal City. It was while encamped at Munson Hill that Stuart was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. The encampment may well have extended to the school grounds.

I suggest you read up on things, the more you know as they say. In his time Virginia was his Sovereign community, much as the United Sates may be for any of us today. Give the man credit for convictions and loyalty, as too making mistakes in battle, well duh, how old was he 27 (?) and how many times has that happened? He was dead at 31.

I agree. In his time their loyalty was to their State and what a great example. It was a fragile time, people don't realize that after the Revolutionary War we weren't automatically the United States, we were a loose confederation of states. Jeb was a Virginian first and a citizen of the United States second. Given the times I can understand his loyalties. But when called upon who did Jeb and R.E Lee defend first, before the CSA, they defended the USA. Must have been a hard choice for both to make that decision to go with the CSA, heart wrenching I would think.

Perhaps you should read the petition and the links in the petition.

"In 1959 Fairfax County named its newest high school to glorify the Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart whose entire military career was dedicated to the perpetuation of slavery.

We must now mute these schools' names that speak to each new generation with the savage vocabulary of ancient prejudice using the syntax of white supremacy…. This isn't political as much as it is symbolic….. the oppressive names and legacies of those who fought to keep slavery and segregation."

Apparently we only celebrate military veterans/war heroes who kill brown people in faraway lands, so we can't have a high school named after an officer who killed white people. It's just not fair! We should name the HS after a Vietnam veteran, maybe a pilot who sprayed napalm all over the landscape, that would be way better.

Naming schools after people is stupid anyway. Just call it Fairfax High School #8.

Can't live with that, I am offended by Lord Fairfax, he owned slaves. Let's just go with #8, if fact we should just number the entire state, streets, communities, districts, schools etc. and remove all names. So how to I get to school #8. Easy take 15 to 20 and then a left on 30. You'll be heading east so right past 19 you'll see a driveway and it's on the left.

Stuart’s genius in military deception techniques were highly regarded by the British during WWII, not only in creating strategy for D-Day maneuvers, but they named their M3 and M5 Stuart tanks after him. (Stuart is famous for using Quaker Guns in his deception at the Battle of Munson Hill, Falls Church, VA.) For a photo of the WWII Stuart tank scroll to the bottom of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._E._B._Stuart.

Stuart’s contributions to society as a whole are recognized globally, yet he is maligned locally. Stuart’s place in history far surpasses his participation in the Confederate Army.

Stuart’s genius should be recognized and as highly regarded by the students of JEB Stuart and our local citizenry as it was by the Allies in WWII and is now by students of the art of warfare. Time proven applications of Stuart's brilliant case study military deception strategies have saved hundreds of thousands of lives over the decades. He deserves to be honored. Why don't the students at JEB Stuart know this already?

So EVERYTHING that is associated with the British should never be celebrated?

EVERYTHING associated with Native Americans is useless?

EVERYTHING having to do with Mexico, the Jewish and Germany should disappear?

They all lost, so they are irrelevant forever?

Interesting that we didn't change the name for the Commonwealth of Virginia after the Revolutionary War. There are lots name changes to take place if we start with JEB Stuart and the Civil War and reach back to the Revolutionary War.

Political correctness never ends. Who wants to write the new history book with the new names?

Even though he was a White Supremacist and a racist, how about Richard Russell High School...if it is good for the US Senate it certainly should be good for the FCPS.

Never seen this much debate over anything at our school, especially over the name. While you can't make everyone happy, at this point, the name should just be kept because while it may have originally had a negative connotation and been to rebel against the Supreme Court's decision of desegregated schools, people have to remember that this is one of the most diverse schools in the nation. The name should be kept to show that even if the original intention was malice, it goes to show that a "school named after a racist" can grow to be diverse, flourishing, and overall a modern example of Americana, without losing the values and historical sense given to it by the name, which should not be changed.

I assume you haven't been to Scotland lately. In 1745 even most of the Scots opposed the efforts of Bonnie Prince Charlie to recover the crown taken from his grandfather. Today he and his followers are celebrated. In Australia you have the Eureka Stockade. In France you have the Paris Commune of 1871. Mexico has Zapatta and Poncho Villa.

It isn't that the Confederacy lost. Like the Nazis, it's what they stood for. But that has nothing to do with the JEB Stuart matter.

As part of the disgrace of "massive resistance" in the wake of 1954's Brown v BOE decision, there were a number of area schools named or renamed with the direct and deliberate intent of intimidating any newly entering black students. Those years are among the darkest and most deplorable in our recent history. Nothing should be done to preserve, commemorate, or show respect for the crude and overt racism of those regrettable times.

Not true, you have been sold a bill of goods, the history is right in the School Board minutes available on line. Schools were NOT renamed. In the minutes, schools were often place names, so the members would know the area and approximately where they were. The final names were not done behind closed doors but at widely attended meetings. Fairfax County was online for opening 20 new elementary schools and 3 high schools within five years. Hey folks, were running out of place names.

Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Falls Church attitudes were not in line with 'massive resistance, check out Matthew Lassiter's book.

The petitioners,(not blaming the kids BTW, they didn't know any better) but the adult architect behind this nonsense did.

For example the minutes refer to 'Merrifield HS", while under construction but in the end that was officially named Luther P Jackson.

The school system has more pressing needs, than changing the name of the school, whether you like history or controversy or not. People need to realize priorities, and if anyone named is controversial it would be WT Woodson.

Simple enough to fix the WT Woodson problem, change the name to Dr. Carter Woodson HS.

This change will still require dealing with the oppressive names of the school sports teams name, so does UVA.

This name change is the dumbest thing that people are wasting their time on.

I guess the names should all be changed to black leaders.

Oh, but wait, many of these school are more Hispanic these days.

Maybe name them after Hispanic leaders.

FCPS has FAR more important things to worry about then folding on name changes.

All black folks currently residing in the US should be GREATFUL for slavery.

Otherwise these folks would be running around barefoot in the Rift Valley throwing spears with dangling earlobes, doing nothing but being Nomadic Herders.

Far more opportunity in the US, just many have chosen NOT to take advantage of the opportunity for generations. Last I checked we have a "minority" running the county and living in the White House, many major cities have "minority" Mayors, Police and Fire Chiefs and School Superintendents. Unfortunately many of these cities have big problems with corruption.

Hiding from the historic roots of an area or culture is a problem. As they say, be careful as History can and will repeat itself.

Yes, changes will be made -Names must be removed. Slave owners from the past are to be the first of that changes we will make, and the other future changes will be made as needed.

Too many "Government Teet Suckers" residing in this area these days.

Too many Yankee Carpet Baggers.

Leave the names of the schools alone, leave the Memorials to the Confederate Soldiers. Most died in the name of States Rights and not the ideals of Slavery.

Slavery was a bad idea, but guess who captured and profited most from the African and Island slaves?

Black and Islanders that wanted to take over a different tribe so they could take land and resources.

What better than to take your competition/enemies, capture and sell them to be transported across the Ocean. What a genius move!!

You've got it wrong. First, as a Superintendent, Woodson was an employee and didn't call the shots; the FCPS Board did that. Secondly, the FCPS Board was the second school system in the Commonwealth to file a desegregation plan; Richmond rejected it. FFX was integrated by 1960 and the federal government awarded funding in recognition of our speedy desegregation.

Get your facts straight and stop the libel and malicious destruction of history.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The Fairfax County School Board will vote later this month on whether to create a work group aimed at renaming a high school named after a Confederate Army general.

If it’s created, the work group would be made up of students, parents, alumni, members of the community and business and community leaders with the goal of renaming J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church.

The group would have until June 2017 to make recommendations to the board.

The proposal was introduced at Thursday’s board meeting, and several people used the citizen participation portion of the meeting to speak on both sides of the issue.

“The NAACP supports changing the name of J.E.B. Stuart High School to better reflect the diversity and inclusion of our public schools,” said George Alber with the Fairfax County NAACP.

“We have a duty to our community to not carry forward the relics of hate from a century ago into the future.”

Nicholas Pisciotta, a 2012 J.E.B. Stuart High graduate, opposes a name change and delivered his comments via video.

“The motion to change the name is a reckless attempt to revise our nation’s past, and deprives the students from this area of the educational opportunity to see how far the nation has advanced. Stuart is one of the most diverse high schools in the nation. It is a magical place,” he said.

Others who spoke took issue with the cost of a name change, which the school system estimates would be just under $700,000.

I see no reason to change the name of J.E.B. Stuart High School, Robert E. Lee High School or any other school in the county which may be named after Confederate generals or other Confederate figures. Like it or not, it is part of our history and we should acknowledge our history, good, bad and ugly.

I also object to the cost of the name change. The estimated $700,000 it would cost to change a school name is money that would be much better spent on more productive uses, or else cut from the budget, thus relieving some burden on Fairfax County taxpayers.

Some of that $700,000 relates to money that will be spent one way or the other, because it included the costs of uniforms and equipment that are periodically replaced in the normal course of business. The referendum to change the name also proposes to explore private fund-raising, which makes sense since a petition to change the school's name got almost 35,000 signatures from people all over the country. Some of those people would contribute to a fund to defray the cost associated with a name change, but otherwise have no obligation to give FCPS a dime.

I find most of the opposition to changing the name to be reactionary and to come from older whites who feel like someone is crapping on their Confederate ancestors' graves by suggesting they are good role models for students at a very diverse high school. They can worship their ancestors on their own time, but FCPS really shouldn't have high schools named after Confederate traitors in 2016.

There is a petition on change.org for changing the name, which apparently Susan Sarandon signed. bfw (big fucking whoop)

The Civil War had NOTHING to do with slavery. It was politically motivated because the government wanted to get up into the states' businesses and the south fought back. The slaves were unfortunately caught in the middle. If it weren't for the slaves there would have been no crops was their thinking. No, there is no justification for the mistreatment of them and that's whatthe blacks cry 'injustice' over. It was over 100 years ago. Freaking get over it!

By this thinking, I should be up in arms because my 9th great-grandfather was an indentured slave when he came over of a ship in the mid 1600s.

This is what's keeping racism alive....it comes from the black as much as it comes from the whites.

Changing a name will make NO difference. It is the ignorance of the blacks that get offended over "Confederate Drive" because it reminds them of what their gg-grandparents endured, yada yada, cough cough, bull shit, bull shit.
