Do we not have cars in 2016? God forbid the schools teach a worthwhile trade. I assume "huh" has a philosophy degree, no job and cries like most millennias about his student debt.

Does Mr. Steger still have all his fingers?
No self-respecting shop teacher retires with all their digits.

Oh, I don't know about that...have you LOOKED under the hoods of cars today?

LBSS class of '89 here. I took 4 years of auto shop. I've restored 3 cars from the 60's since then. I've blueprinted and rebuilt a Jaguar V-12, one of the most complicated non-racing engines ever built. I don't work on anything built in this century and for good reason...the manufacturers really aren't building the cars in a way that a shade tree can wrench on them. They want you bringing them back to the dealership. And while my automotive education stopped in '89 (I'm a naval officer now...), there's no way that kids in auto shop today are being taught to tear down and rebuild engines and transmissions. Auto Shop today is basic automotive repair. Back in my day, you learned and could address any problem on any system.

Something tells me Mr. Steger does not have an online Ed.D. degree, has no use for Flip Flippen and knows more about teaching than all of the bureaucrats in Gatehouse put together. He should be the next superintendent.

Fool, Fairfax High School is owned by the CITY of Fairfax. None of the Fairfax COUNTY turf field horseshit applies to us. When we, the taxpayers of the CITY of Fairfax, decided FHS should have a turf field, we, the taxpayers of the CITY of Fairfax paid for it.

Unless you live in the CITY, and I know you don't, STFU.

It's possible he didn't have a degree at all.

My best friend dropped out of high school and ultimately became a top line mechanic at a big new car dealership. After 15 years or so of that, he was offered a job teaching auto shop in another Virginia public school system. Since his wife made big bucks, he could handle the pay cut so he jumped on it.

He's retired now after 30 some years, but he has thousands of kids that remember what a cool teacher he was.

I don't know if it could happen today, but back then, the school system waived their usual education requirements to fill the position. Apparently, ace mechanics that are good with kids and will work for not a lot of money are few and far between.

I have a cousin who dropped out of high school and became a welder.
He eventually started his own company. When he was ready to retire he sold the company for mega bucks because they catered to large manufacturing companies
on a contract basis. After that he taught welding at a local community
college and worked there until he turned 70.

I taught for many years with Les. Outstanding man. I miss the days where I could bring my car to his shop and get repairs done during the day by students. All free of charge. He's the end of a proud line of FFX teachers/mentors/good dudes.

If somebody takes care of you? They take care of you. If they went above and beyond...you tip them. Fuck no tipping policies. The valet at my club stopped somebody from stealing my Mercedes. They have a no tip policy. Don't think for one minute I didn't drop a thousand on that kid for doing the right thing. I handed a sealed envelope with the cash to the locker room attendant and told him to put it in the boy's locker. I get to leave my car under the porte-cociere now...

For an auto shop teacher fixing your car for free, assuming the repairs were quality work...you go to him at the end of the year and tip him $20 per repair. You don't need to make a big show of it. Catch the man going out the door on the way home, have the fresh bills pre-folded into a tight stack folded in quarters and then just shake the man's hand with the bills palmed and say, "I just wanted to say thank you for taking care of my car this year." Pass the bills and walk away...
