FCPS to Start One Week Prior to Labor Day 2017/18

The Board directed the Superintendent to prepare a calendar for the 2017-18 school year that reflects a start date one week prior to Labor Day. http://www.fcps.edu/index.shtml

I call BS - The survey was open March 30 - April 13, 2016 and they have the board meeting on April 18th. Not much room for discussion. How many major decisions are made like this within a 3 week period? The survey is window dressing.

Im pissed I like the last week of Aug as a vacation time. Also Im pissed my kids lose a week maybe two of vacation the 1st year. My kids get straight A's in all the hardest classes, why should they have to sit through even more BS?

At least school lets out earlier after SOLs, one week less of meaningless school

My kids get full vacation - bs to deprive them. If implemented Ill pull them early in june in the amount their vacation is being cut. They earn that break

The calendar for 2017-18 -- however it is drafted -- ultimately has to be approved. Only Tamara Kaufax voted against the idea of taking a look at an earlier start date. We'll see what (if anything) comes of it.

Ironically, your kids won't want to get out that last week. That's when all the yearbook signing, parties, concerts, field days etc. are.

Just cowboy up, be a responsible parent, and plan your vacation within the 9-10 weeks the kids will still have off.

I didnt say they would have to get it all at once. There will be lots of 4 day weekends if they would prefer that to the end of school. They would get to pick. An employer doesnt get to cut your vacation in half for no reason neither does the school

they claim one more week in September will help them better prepare for a test (SOL) mid May - I guess its possible but seems kind of absurd.

Got a note from the principal saying it would help with the AP tests happening this week. Really? An extra week in August will have an effect 35+ weeks later in May. Give me a fucking break.

Everybody is a pansy. No one has guts enough to say what they think and stand on it. If they do, they just apologize later.

For fear of a media backlash, the principal chooses the easy way out.

Wrong. They will move the SOLs up a week. No matter when school ends, they will need three weeks after the final SOL to wrap up testing. If school gets out earlier, SOL tests start earlier.

The window now closes June 24. If schools wanted to start SOL testing June 1st and run it up to June 24th, they could. But they won't. Because they need all initial testing wrapped up by June 1/2 so that they can use the weeks after that to do remediation and retakes and then pack all the shit up and send it back to the state.

If you get out a week earlier, the testing will wrap up May 23/24 or so so that there is still a three week chunk of time afterward with which to tie up all the loose ends.

I agree with your point but to clarify, they early start is for the AP exams which are scheduled by the state and are usually toward the end of May.

Assuming a block schedule, starting school a week earlier gets the kids about 3-4.5 hours of extra instructional time in their classes. Doubtful that extra few hours is going to make a difference.

So why did they have a survey and decision all in a 3 week period with little announcement prior? We only get a month to have our voices heard on the school year start? Also, many are neglecting to mention this is a Temporary Waiver - FCPS would have to return to the old start schedule in several years if this is not made permanent.

2017-18 is still 18 months away. Nobody has decided anything beyond the notion of taking a look at what an alternate calendar might look like.

With more and more of the school districts obtaining waivers to open before Labor Day, Kings Dominion will now have to hire day laborers to close out the last week before eventually adjusting their calendar for good.

Loudoun started a week before Fairfax this year but somehow manages to be out June 9th. Perhaps Fairfax should take a look at all the built in snow days and extra days off that the '15-16 calendar includes and cut back a bit. Kids going until June 23 this year is absurd! Looks like they have extra snow days this year that won't be used!

It's either too many snow days or too few. You ignorant assfucks won't decide which to complain about until after the fact. Losers!

Nice, they barely go to school in Fairfax county anyway. Not sure why we even pay teachers.

Fairfax county school teachers are home half the year.

I bet you cannot find more than 5 families that want this. Prime time (lower rates and less people) vacation at the beaches in the 3rd week of Aug. Im pretty sure the teachers don't even want this.

Have you seen that big cinderblock building they call a high school? 12 months out of the year is just too damn long for anyone to be institutionalized. Sucks. Big Gov’t wants your kids. Don’t let 'em kid ya.

Admin is the one that wants this, teachers generally support it too if you believe the survey they slapped up for 3 weeks with little announcement. Parents are split ~51% for 49% against the change; look here for the results http://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/A9382F6DCB2C/$file/Calendar%20Survey%20Results%20April%202016.pdf

Why are we wasting money trying to find out what stupid-ass parents think we ought to do? You want control over your child's education, home-school the little brats. Otherwise, shut the fuck up and let the teachers and admins who have actually trained for this work do their jobs.

my kids will not miss vacation we will grant it end of year or during the year - fcps doesnt get to screw them like that. Bonus is they get amazing grades regardless.

All this fretting over SOL's shows how stupid NCLB is. I feel sorry for the slower kids with the pressure of SOL's on their shoulders.
