UMCP vs. UVA vs. GMU vs. VA Tech

Just wondering what other FFX residents thought of the schools listed in the subject. I'm a senior who got accepted to all four. I have a pretty good idea of what GMU, UVA, and Tech have to offer being a VA resident. What about the University of Maryland, College Park though? Not from MD so I don't know what its reputation is. Anyone have any recommendations?

The University of Maryland is inferior to all 3 of those Virginia schools. Why would you pay out-of-state tuition to go to an inferior school?

Congrats for being accepted, those are all good schools. I'd cross UMCP off this list, as MuTG6 posted it will cost you a lot of money.

I graduated from GMU about 10 years ago. Knowing what I know now, I would've saved money and gone to NOVA for a couple years then transferred into a VA university.

Honestly undergrad doesn't really matter anymore, it's a box you check off in order to qualify for most professional jobs. Just go somewhere reputable and pick a major with some value and get good grades.

I know a guy who graduated from Strayer and does quite well because he works his ass off and the execs like him.

I'd say it goes

UMCP
UVA
VA Tech

I'd put GMU as a commuter school and not in that list. My all time favorite would be Harvard or MIT.

This person does not have the smallest clue what they are talking about so just disregard.

UMCP is basically a school with at least 30% thugs. I'd stay away.

UVA, VT, GMU are all excellent. It's just a matter of personal preference, what your major will be and how much money you want to spend. I agree with the other poster. Go to NOVA for 2 years and save yourself a ton of money.

My guess is that most people would rank both UVa and Virginia Tech above Maryland. Many would probably rank Mason higher as well. However it isn't a question of which school is in theory better. It is a question of which school is better FOR YOU.

If you are a Virginia resident and haven't been offered a very nice scholarship package, Maryland is going to be the more expensive choice. So what is the reason for paying more money to go there? Do they offer a program you are interested in which is not available in one of your other three choices? Is Maryland's program that you are interested in better than the other three choices? Do you have the opportunity to work part time near College Park? Is your significant other going there, or you are living in Alexandria and hope to stay at home? Will you be able to graduate from Maryland in three years rather than 4 at the other schools? Do Maryland students do better at getting into the graduate program you are looking at than students from the other schools. Are you hoping to be the big fish in a slightly inferior pond rather than just another fish in a superior pond?

Or are you just bragging?

Undergrad really is just a baseline qualifier (**EDIT** for job applications). Absolutely go to NVCC then transfer to a 4 year institution. I am biased, so take this ranking with a grain of salt but I say the order of preference is UVa, VT, GMU, getting hit by a bus, any Maryland school.

UVA is a very good school, as are GMU and VT. UMD is good but out of state and in a less than savory location. Good luck deciding!

To be fair, Johns Hopkins is a great school, but it is private.

You obviously haven't been to CP in years. The "thugs" you see standing around
on the streets are illegal immigrant trash and not students. Say goodbye to affordable off campus housing. PG is a sanctuary county. Thank you Democrats.

I can give you a perspective as it would apply to a business degree. As a business person hiring people I would not apply a much weight for or against a candidate from any of these schools. I might give MD a slight edge because their school of business carries has gotten a few national accolades. UVA and VA Tech are about the same (VA Tech is accountant central). GMU might come in slightly behind the others but again its not a big variance.

GMU is near DC so there is a lot of local things to do. UVA is more high brow if you are into that. VA Tech is more rural and obviously has a big football tradition which by the way keeps you more connected to the school after graduation. I got nothing good to say about MD.

UVA is clearly in a different category than the other schools listed from a prestige standpoint. Depending on the area of study, it may or may not be a better choice than Tech or Mason.

I would not choose UMD over any of them unless they had a specialized program I was interested in that was top notch or if they offered me a full ride.

Not enough information to give much better advice than you have already gotten.

Maryland is ghetto. If you've got the brains for it (unlikely), get an engineering or CS degree from Tech. If not, study anthropology at UVA and later work as a bank teller.

After recently touring a LOT of schools and hearing so much about how UVA is "the school" I was really put off by the place for many reasons. Freshman housing is questionable. Then most have to move off campus for there 2nd-4th year. There is a big off campus housing racket in Cville because everyone knows the kids have to move off campus.

Why would you want to spend 4 years of your life in sub par dorms that most do not have Air Conditioning. If you are a snooty private school kid UVA may be up your ally, but VA Tech Hands down is where you should consider going.

If you have not been there, you need to visit.

UMD, yea, its PG County. Off campus can be sketchy.

Hopkins, it in the middle of a dump. I do not care what the school rep is, just go visit. My son stayed on campus for a week. Just look at all the guard shacks, cameras, access gates and key cards required. More like a prison, but to keep the inmates OUT and the students IN.

GMU, campus layout SUX. I guess once you find your dorm and get into the center of the school it is not bad, but I would not want to commute there for love nor money.

Just admit you didn't get in and get on with you preferred max-AC choice of freshman dorm.

Most UVA grads don't want to work in waste management, so I'm thinking you don't get a lot of resumes.

If you are a wannabe prepster/lax brah who thinks a piece of paper from C'ville is important, likes Greek life, is nerdy enough to wear a tie to a football game and is otherwise an obnoxious, entitled bitch, than UVA is THE place for you!

And no I wasn't accepted at UVA. Didn't even apply, not even as a safety, and went to higher ranked school, at least according to USNWR.

That's fucking funny. My neighbor got a biology degree from UVA and worked as a bank teller. Then he moved up in the world and sold office supplies.

To the OP,

If you haven't accepted and paid the deposit in any of those schools by now (except maybe Mason as I don't know about that one), you already are on a waiting list and probably won't get in. They've all moved on and have started assigning dorm rooms to new folks by now. Sorry, maybe next year.
