So Many People Bitch about the Taxes, The Salaries, The Fire, Police, Govt workers, Helicopters. I am curious what is your Perfect World? and what is the cost for it? and Where does that income come from? I know as an Adult in Fairfax County, I am pleased with the services we get for our money, Much Better than living in Prince William County, or other places in the Commonwealth. You can start with your Profession or Line of work and the elaborate. This should be interesting.. Before the children start, I will say I am in Public Safety, The Salary Starting was $18K 28 years ago, over the next (almost) 3 decades and currently $64K. No Its not Fairfax, Gas was .99 a Gallon, Rent $525 a month 1BR apt, and we didn't have Cell Phones. PS one line comments show your maturity, but you wouldn't get that even if it slapped you in the face.. and Min Wage was $2.80 an hour...

I am of the same opinion. We really don't have recessions around here like other parts of the country. I don't mind the taxes because they pay for a lot. On the few occasions I needed to dial 911 they showed up fast. Traffic sucks but they build roads pretty fast. Snow removal is light years better than it was 20 years ago which is pretty good since there are many winters with little to no snow. Top notch schools are not cheap and they keep the property values up. Rather than cut taxes, I'd rather there be more transparency on how it is being spent.

You really do get a lot of cool shit for your tax money here. for a while, I had $400 of my rent paid for.

A good long while I was making 3K/mo and having less than 1K go to most expenses (to include utilities, cable/internet, insurance, etc). If you know how to find and navigate the system, then you can do pretty well.

People who bitch about housing costs have it easy, shit is cheap compared to the big cities and salaries are even higher here.

How about a life not in Fairfax County?

I work in tech. Remotely. So I took my job to Charlottesville. Lower housing costs, less traffic, more mountains, and I get to live in the city!

Also, the beer is better here. The women too.

Less traffic? Guess you haven't been to the "downtown" area on the weekend. Also, the women are stuck up cunts.

LOL!!! When was the last time you were here to drink?
Are you talking brew-pubs, breweries? bars?
There's only a few non-brew pub breweries in Charlottesville proper.
South Street and Champion which are decent. They're on-par with Fair Winds here.
But, we also have Port City, the Great American Beer Festival 2015 Best Small Brewery winner.

So let's open up to region to let Starr Hill and other breweries in. (As you know Starr Hill is in Crozet, not Charlottesville.) I'll even give you the larger region of Central Virginia breweries. But that opens up us to the region.

Fairfax region breweries
DC Brau, 3 Stars, Atlas Brewing, Port City, Lost Rhino, Heritage, Fair Winds, Old Ox, Right Proper, Forge Brew Works, Adroit Theory

Central Virginia breweries
South Street, Champion, Starr Hill, Blue Mountain, Three Notch'd, Wild Wolf, Devil's Backbone (BTW, ALL of these we in Fairfax can pick up at Whole Foods or Wegman's)

Brewpubs? Not even close to Fairfax.
You got no Dogfish Head (we got 2), Mad Fox, Capital City, Sweetwater, Ornery, Caboose Brewing, even chains like Gordon Biersch, Rockbottom.

Not only that, ChurchKey and Bluejacket in DC destroy anything in the Charlottesville region for selection and quality.

You know BB you and I are probably about the same age and I went to Lake Braddock and grew up in Kings Park but I had to flee Fairfax county in the mid 90s because I just felt It was getting too crowded and traffic was worse every day. I had a townhouse in Centreville and was not liking it. Noisy neighbors and parking wars were getting me down. I fled to Fauquier county and got 5 acres and have been very happy since.
Things might have turned out different had I been living in a single family house like my parents had but as I am also a civil servant I just couldn't afford it.
