People bringing dogs into Fairfax Home Depot

WTF is up with this? I was at the checkout this evening and a guy in front of me had a dog with him. Then this couple walks down the plumbing aisle towards the checkout with TWO DOGS and all of the dogs started barking at each other. Did I miss something? Was it take-your-dog-to-home-depot-day?

It was Pups-in-the Park Day at the Nats on Saturday. Dogs sit with their owners at many restaurants in Europe. Maybe you should re-examine the basis of some of your fears and expectations.

Big Deal -- I agree with M67HU, and I am a HUGE dog-lover. Not everyone loves dogs, some people have had a dog bite them, attack them, etc.

I never take my dog to PetsMart -- I know my dog, I don't know yours or how you control it. They're dogs and anything could happen.

Nats Park probably advertises Dog Day and non dog lovers can stay away, not so much with people trying to fix up their homes and encountering pets. That being said these places are probably one incident from a huge lawsuit and banning this practice.

Also, Europeans are entitled shits...

I have seen this before at Home Depot.

I can top this. I had somebody bring their dog into a hospital (and Emergency Room) where I worked. No, they were NOT a service animal. They could not understand why they could not do this. "It is too hot to leave them in the car. What do you expect me to do?" "Leave."

Not our problem. I guess we could have called Animal Control since they obviously did not know how to care for an animal.

They left. With the dog. Presumably to take them home, where they belonged.

Now we will start finding dog poop and pee in the aisles at Home Depot.

Most Home Depot's allow dogs in. I take mine all the time, but I also know how to control him. While my dog is friendly and would never bite anyone, I cannot stand when someone just walks up and starts petting them.

Always ask and take it slow. My dog is trained and certified to go into hospitals and is used as a therapy dog, but most ar not.

Service dogs are allowed in hospitals.

Pets are not.

It depends. Pets are allowed in the hospital when doctors believe the visit will help boost a patient's mental state. They are usually brought in caged and then united with the patient-owner in an office or meeting space. It can be a very positive thing.

They do that about once a month throughout the season. It's been going on for some years now and seems to be very popular with both dogs and owners.

I can't tell you how many times I hear people say this. And yet both times I was bitten by a dog it was by a "friendly" dog that would "never bite."

Half my family is German, living in Germany. They have dogs. They never take them to the restaurant/grocery store/subway....

They take them hunting and to the lake and to the park....you know, places where dogs belong.

I have noticed a trend of some dog owners becoming so obsessed with their dogs that they feel the need to"include" their dog as an equal member of the family in everything. Thus Rover needs to come along to pick out new cabinet knobs or a screen door. There is really no good reason to bring your dog to home depot.

I would rather have a encounter with a controlled, properly tethered dog.

Instead of on those un-restrained, out of control, vicious monsters that these modern parents have spawned.

I totally agree.

There is no reason for a (non-service) dog to be in Home Depot or any other store. Except for maybe a pet store, but they have to have special materials to clean up the accidents that happen all over the store.

Gross.

A lot of people are scared of dogs. And they have every right to be. Many people have been bitten and mauled by the family pet or somebody else's dog. People get totally engrossed in shopping and the dog is lunging at other shoppers.

Keep them home.

The last few times I went to Tysons Galleria I've seen people with dogs there. I've also seen them in MOM's Organic Market in Herndon - a woman walking her dog in the store once and I believe the same woman with the dog in the shopping cart! I couldn't believe it. Jeez, if you can't leave your treasured little idol at home for a couple of hours maybe you should just stay in the house and get everything delivered so you can stay right with poochie and worship it.

Kids should never be brought in to a restaurant, anyone that does this is mentally stunted. Have you ever heard of take out?! Do you think everyone else wants to hear a crying baby or a whiny kid?! NO! Do the world a favor and take your "experience" home!

I've seen this from DC to Old Town. Parents bringing kids into bars. Some, young enough to be strapped to daddy's cuckold chest while he sips a local sourced, progressive microbrew, and mommy is talking about how backwards Southerners are with her entitled friends.

Don't have kids, having not contributed to over-population, I feel entitled to treat my dog like somebody else would treat a baby. Shut up about it or I will get pregnant, refuse to work and go on welfare.

It's not a law, dummy. The simple fact is that German dogs are frequent sights in German restaurants, and none of the German people think a thing of it. It's normal. Whole different attitude there that you have plainly never managed to pick up on.

Fairfax Home Depot actually has a sign that states no pets are allowed in the store. Some managers don't care and probably don't want to piss off paying customers, but it is at their discretion whether dogs are allowed.

I have seen people with dogs at both Home Depot and Lowe's being told that their dog cannot be in the store.

Actually I do not believe the Fairfax Home Depot allows pet dogs in the store. Some Home Depots do, but it is usually up to the manager. The Leesburg HD does allow them, so I brought my dog with me to the Fairfax one, but if you look outside at the entrance door, the sign says no pets allowed. So back on the car my dog went and I cut my shopping time short.

You can read and also believe that rules apply to you. A lot of folks don't think that rules apply to them (and also can't read.

Perhaps HD thinks it is safeguarding itself by posting this sign and not enforcing the rules, and thereby, avoiding a potential lawsuit if there is a problem with the dogs. Its not.

Huh, I don't see where I said it was a law? Can you point out that part to me?
Here's the point, my illiterate friend, while people in Germany may take their dogs to dinner, that doesn't make it right nor do all German dog owners feel that way....only the ones who don't have any respect for other people in society.

I have a dog, wonderful old lab. She doesn't go inside stores, restaurants, grocery stores....because I am not so self important to think just because she's MY dog (therefore special) she belongs there.

Boy, you're dumb. The law does not require German people to take dogs out shopping and dining. And the fact that some folks you might know in Germany choose NOT to take their dogs out shopping and dining does counter the plain and simple fact that many thousands of other Germans do. Dogs out and about are a common sight there. Deal with it.

Here's the point, dull-brain -- YOU don't make that call. Germans do. And they plainly don't care what your stupid mores and pointless values about the matter are.

Big Deal, you argue like the typical dolt you are. Can't seem to keep your brain concentrated? Do the letters and numbers get all jumbled up look like sguiggly lines and stuff? You get confused easily?

You included in your discussion:

I never said it was. Never even mentioned the word law.

That said, my point is that if everyone had a little concern for other people rather than thinking they and their stupid fucking dog need to be in the restaurant, grocery store, Home Depot...things might just be a little better. But no, you and your kind just feel the need to do whatever you want whenever you want with no regard for anyone else. This applies to many areas; while driving, at work..... Too much to ask from the "do what I want crowd' I suppose.

Do what I want or, I'm going to call you a P.O.S doing what you want.
Maybe we should put it up for a vote. If we did, the dogs would win. People love dogs! Dog's aren't dirty like people think. People who own dogs are healthier than those who don't. Stress causes health problems. People who hate dogs tend to be uptight. We don't catch illnesses from dogs, they don't catch them from us. Now, children pass around a lot of sickness to adults. I worked at a daycare once and got sick 4 times in 2 months and quit. So, maybe its those filthy things that should be kept at home.

To the allergic people, maybe pop a Benadryl, it'll relax you a bit too.

A few years back, a neighbor woman let her big dogs into her unfenced front yard (they would have been lonely in her fenced back yard) so the dogs could be with her and kids as they put up holiday lights in the front. I guess she wanted the dogs to get in on the holiday spirit. (Makes as much sense as the dogs helping to pick new cabinet knobs.)

Of course, it's her own front yard. If the dogs were trained to stay there, no problem, but she couldn't be bothered to train them. If she staked/tied the dogs in the front, no problem, but she couldn't be bothered to do that.

Her dogs had menaced my leashed dog and me about a week earlier, but turned away at about 20 feet. A few days after that encounter, I asked the woman as politely as possible to please keep the dogs on leashes when off her property. She was evasive and dismissive. I explained that my dog had been mugged previously by off-leash dogs and I didn't want it to happen again.

I had been carrying a walking stick after the previous mugging. After the woman make it clear that she didn't care about the safety of my dog or me, I dug-out the pepper spray that I had bought for my wife years earlier (she didn't want to carry it).

One day, the woman, her kids, and dogs (?) worked on the holiday lights, unbeknownst to me. I was minding my own business as I walked my leashed dog on a sidewalk 5 houses from my house, 3 houses from the woman's house.

The woman's dogs were more interested in angrily charging 200 feet towards my leashed dog and me, instead of continuing to help with the holiday lights. The larger of the two dogs closed to about 8 feet and changed from barking and snarling to deep growling and baring his teeth. I pepper sprayed that dog before he could move in to bite me or my dog.

The dog owner actually explained to the Animal Control Officer that she brought the dogs into the unfenced front yard for the set up of the holiday lights.

The few times that I moved my dog from our fenced back yard to our unfenced front yard to be with me as I worked in the front, I put the dog on line that kept her in our front yard. Really kind of easy to do.

A week or so after that first pepper spray incident, the woman's husband came after my wife, my dog, and me as we walked on a dead end street. Brandishing his big dog like a weapon and as the dog strained on his leash (so they did own leashes) to pull menacingly towards my little dog, the husband shouted insults and threats.

He yelled, "stay away from my dogs, stay away from my family!" [I thought about that later, his dogs were both healthy and young. Bigger dog was about 85 lbs and his smaller dog was about 65 lbs. Unless you're Usain Bolt, I don't think that you can stay away from the dogs when they run towards you.]

My reply was "keep your dogs on leashes when off your property!" He declared "B___s___, they're the neighborhood dogs, a__wipe."

I never knew when there was an election for neighborhood dogs.

The guy was especially mad b/c I had made videos of the loose dogs in the earlier incident. I guessed that his wife and he would otherwise be lying to the police/animal control about what had happened.

I love dogs, big dogs, little dogs, medium dogs, but my responsibility was to keep my dog safe from dogs that were illegally off leash when they presented an immediate danger. Since I started carrying pepper spray, I encountered dozens of loose dogs without the need to use pepper spray or call Animal Control. They were all either friendly (in which case I petted them if owner was around & gave permission) or the dogs were indifferent, no threat to me or mine.

Almost two years after the 1st pepper spray incident, the neighbors' two big dogs again charged my dog and me. My wife was with me this time. The dogs charged side-by-side at top speed. I instinctively grabbed the MACE brand pepper gel that I now carried (longer range and less blowback into your own face than with pepper spray) and sprayed the dogs. Soon, the dogs had done a 180 and were running back to their yard as fast as they had charged in the aborted attack.

Again, the woman had intentionally let her dogs into the front yard with no plan to keep them from running loose. Husband and wife dog owners then shouted threats, vulgarities, and insults as my wife, my dog, and me hurried home. Husband shouted "F---ing a--hole, why don't you try and spray me!"

Guy was standing in his yard as he issued that challenge to mutual combat. I wasn't interested in fighting and sure as hell wasn't going to go into his yard. Police (called by me) later told me that the husband and wife let their two dogs into their house without ever washing off the pepper gel and petted the dogs covered with pepper gel. So their whole house and husband and wife were pepper sprayed (indirectly).

The irony of his challenge to me to spray him was that he sprayed himself, indirectly. If your dog was covered with bad stuff whether it's mud, manure, chemical, whatever, you would keep the dog outside until you had washed the stuff off the dog. You wouldn't bring the dog inside and you would not pet the dog if he's covered with bad stuff. I thought that was elementary.

Again, I had video and audio of most of the event and used that to explain the circumstances to the officers.

Officers spent 45 minutes or so at the dog owners' house. When the lead female officer returned to my house, she told me that the guy tried to argue with her as she told him repeatedly that I had a right to do everything that I had done (i.e., spray his charging illegally off-leash dogs) to defend my wife, myself, and my dog.

Thanks. I will never understand how my neighbors thought that they had a right to let their untrained, poorly socialized dogs loose to charge other people and leashed dogs in the neighborhood.

The dog owners committed a series of epic failures as pet owners, then tried to blame me for the logical consequences of their irresponsibility. The most astounding failure of those pet owners was not immediately washing the dogs, outside, and getting the pepper off the dogs. I sure didn't want to hurt their dogs, just wanted to make sure that they didn't hurt my wife, my dog, or me.

In both of the pepper incidents, the officers assured me that the sprayed dogs would be fine, that the pepper spray/gel would not cause permanent damage to the dogs. That was what my prior research indicated.

My back-up to the pepper spray/gel was my walking stick, but I definitely did not want to hit any dogs with it (unless absolutely necessary) as it could really injure the dogs. The problem wasn't so much with the dogs, as with their irresponsible owners.

I just wanted to walk my dog in peace and dared to defend my 27 lb dog, photo below, from their loose and charging, angrily barking, 85 lb and 65 lb dogs.

file.php?2,file=228185,filename=dog.jpg

Our dog was rescued from a high-kill animal shelter to be trained in prison, before we adopted her. (You can see the shadow of the prison concertina wire in the photo.) She was an American Foxhound/Beagle mix and, sadly, died about 3 months after the pepper gel incident, almost 13 years after we got her. She was well worth defending.

Dear Dog Walker1-

Your dog is adorable.

I was also charged from the rear by a strange dog while walking in the neighborhood. Scared the crap out of me. I thought I was going to have to grab a branch or throw rocks at the beast.

Thanks.

I never took my dog in any store other than pet stores with signs indicating that leashed pets were allowed. I always assumed that pets were not allowed in stores unless a sign indicated otherwise. At the same time, I guess it's up to the store owner or manager to set the policy, unless health regulations forbid dogs in a particular venue such as a food store or restaurant.

Responsible dog owners do not take their dogs to inappropriate places.

Bad dog owners often do things that give all dog owners a bad reputation.

Years ago I was in a pool store when a customer walked in with a huge, mean, leashed German shepherd. There were no signs about dogs in the store.

[Don't think that I'm hating on German shepherds b/c I've known and met many that were as sweet as a dog could be, but there are mean dogs within almost any breed.]

My first reaction was that the odor of the noxious pool chemicals, annoying to my nose, would be especially irritating to a dog's sensitive nose.

Employee walked slowly over to offer help to the dog owning customer, whereupon the unmuzzled dog let out a loud angry bark that shook the store and caused alarm to everyone in the store.

Another customer, who was a lot braver than I was, turned to the dog owner and calmly said: "I have a dog like that at home. I would never take him out in public without a muzzle on and would never take him in a store like this."

Either the irresponsible dog owner ignored the reprimand or replied too softly for me to hear.

Thanks. Below are a couple more photos of my dog. When she was young she loved to get on the rail of the deck (like a cat) and walk along the top of the rail looking down for squirrels, chipmunks, or similar critters that would dare invade her back yard. Other photo shows her being chased by a buddy at a dog park, again one of her favorite activities as a young dog.

The strange dog that charged you from behind probably caused you to have a primal fear response.

My first run-in with one of the neighbors’ dogs was likewise terrifying.

Walking my dog on a leash as always, I was using a headlamp to see through the dark as it was about 8 at night. I heard the sound of a large animal running at a high rate of speed. Turning my head to the source of the sound, I initially saw a large black animal with large teeth. For a second or two, I thought it was a wild animal, maybe a bear. As I got my light on the animal, I saw that it was a black dog running at me from the neighbors’ yard.

As the dog ran into the street, I was yelling, “no, no, no!” I could hear a woman calling the dog back and the voice seemed to be coming from the neighbors’ yard. The dog turned back towards the neighbors’ yard when he had reached about 20 feet from me.

[It was reminiscent of an event when I was a kid in rural coastal California. Friend and I were hiking in a field when a wild boar started chasing us. We ducked through a barbed wire fence, and also climbed a small tree in case the boar, at least 200 lbs of mean, crashed through the fence. That type of event creates a primal fear response.]

Would you believe that the woman is a federal administrative official? I don’t want to specify which dept/agency and I can’t really determine how high up she is, probably moderately high up. I will say that the dept/agency is sufficiently important that you would wonder how someone like her could pass vetting and work there. I’m pretty sure that she worked for TSA at the time of the various incidents that I described, but she has apparently moved up into a new bureaucracy since then.

Husband apparently was a big man on campus, 30 years ago. In what is likely (IMHO) a textbook case of overcompensation, he now has “BIG” along with some initials on his license plate.

Conversations with the couple were hilarious (in retrospect, after danger from husband and dogs had passed) and often surreal. The woman evades responsibility like a 13 year old teenager.

As my wife, dog, and I hurried home after the pepper gel incident, the wife sobbed like a teenager "you sprayed our family pets, you're a bully." [I wanted to say "your dogs menaced my family pet," but it's hard to argue with a delusional person. I just keep saying "keep your dogs on leashes when off your property" and "I have a right to defend my wife, myself, and my dog."]

She also said, "just you wait, [my first & last names] 'til your dog gets loose."

(This was absurd b/c her dogs did not get loose. She set them loose.)

Husband chimed in, his voice dripping with hate, "I can't wait! I can't wait 'til your dog gets loose." (So, what? They would torture my dog if she had gotten loose, even though she would have posed no threat to them or their big dogs? That seemed to be the implication.)

Woman, federal official, shouts at me "You better watch yourself [my first & last names] when you're around our property!"

Since my house is on a cul-de-sac and the dog owners' house is where my street joins the only exit street, I have to drive or walk past the dog owners' house whenever I leave my home.

A few days after the dog charged me in that very first incident with no pepper used, and after she and her husband had ignored polite emails asking about the dog, I first asked her in person if it was her dog that charged me, she said that she didn’t know, while displaying various obvious mannerisms of deception.

“Well, do your dogs spend a lot of time out and about in the neighborhood?” I asked.

“Yes.” She said. “Well, why is that? I mean what do they do, open the doors?” I asked.

“Yes, they can open the doors,” she said, laughing. She might as well have said, “I can’t be responsible to control my dogs b/c they can open doors.” After that conversation, I retrieved the pepper spray that my wife refused to carry after I bought it for her years earlier.

I get it, I really do. In the minds of this couple, they and their dogs can do no wrong.

There was an incident a few years where a woman was angrily denouncing the guy who shot her brother to death. It seemed that her brother was with 2 other armed men who went into a bar at night. The 3 armed robbers pointed guns at the patrons and employees and demanded that the people get on the ground. One patron, who had a concealed carry permit and a hidden gun, did not get on the ground. Instead, he waited for the robbers to walk past him, whereupon that patron pulled out his gun and shot the woman’s brother to death. The other two robbers fled in fear.

She said, “He was a good brother and a good person. He just wanted money. He wouldn’t have shot anybody. He never hurt anybody in his life. That man should have warned my brother first. He had no right to shoot him.” [I’m paraphrasing all that. Police investigation cleared the shooter as justifiably shooting in defense of self and others.]

In the mind of that woman, her brother could do no wrong. The justifiably- killed armed robber and his family are the victims, to this woman.
I am not making that up.

Whether it’s on the news, Cops TV show with real criminals, or crime TV shows or movies, criminals or their relatives will often find a way to justify illegal actions. “I had to kill him b/c he humiliated me about my bad picks in the NCAA brackets” or similar nonsense, says the criminal. "I had no choice, don't you see?"

Now, I’m not saying that setting big, poorly-socialized, menacing dogs loose is on a par with armed robbery. I’m just saying that the dog owner couple love their dogs like the woman loved her brother. They can’t imagine a scenario where they or their dogs are responsible for unfortunate results of their actions. And the woman can’t accept that her armed robber-brother threw his life away and caused his own death by pointing guns to rob people.

Clearly the dog owners were the authors of their own misfortune. Yet, in their minds, they and their dogs are the victims of a mean neighbor, that would be me.

Dog Walker1 you get better and better.
Let me explain some things-

Many of us love dogs. I in particular am in absolute awe of service dogs. Those are very well trained dogs and are never a problem.

However, that does mean that I like a huge (or little) dog jumping all over me, drooling all over my clothes, dodging one at a grocery store or other store, lunging at me and/or charging at me while I am taking a nice stroll around the neighborhood, etc. I do not like dodging manure and puddles of pee that they leave all over public places.

Your pets will be just fine at home. If they are not, then maybe you need to re-think why you have an animal living with you.

And I also don't see the need to take them to restaurants, even with an outdoor seating area. Particularly when the servers are treating them better than they treat me, and the owners expect this. Doggie treats, special water bowls, etc. Been to Clarendon and Shirlington lately? I struggle to get a glass of water or a clean fork and see the dogs getting treating like royalty.

Looks like a lot of whining losers in here. People that apparently have an inferiority complex toward dogs.

No one is asking for a consensus as to whether or not you can or should bring a dog into HD or anywhere else. The fact is if the store allows it, the it is perfectly acceptable. It doesn't matter what you think. If what you thought mattered the HD policies or local ordinances would adjusted. As a result, your opinion and views are unobjectively irrelevant. You can respond to that but can't argue with it. Hopefully HD starts throwing dog days soon.

If your net worth is north of $500,000 please feel free to punch me

Exact mentality that has killed this country, especially this area.

Act like a douche. Get punched. Sue the person who punched you for acting like a douche.

You're a faggot.

I'll intersperse my answer with from indented quotes from you.

Thank you.

I met the nicest German shepherd service dog a few years ago. Old college friend and I met out of town to see the college team play. My friend had a paralyzed friend S who lived near the game site. My friend and I stayed one night at S's house with his wife and service dog Lemon.

Lemon was big and sweet. Well behaved, but she would push her head into your hand, signaling "pet me, pet me." Service dog was trained to pick up and get items for S.

Wife of S had put me in the bedroom upstairs, S & wife, and my college buddy downstairs. Wife of S told me that Lemon sleeps downstairs normally, but might get upstairs to patrol if I got up in the night. Sure enough, when I used the bathroom at 4 am, Lemon came up to my room and was lying down on the throw rug at the end of my bed when I returned to the bed room.

Beautiful, sweet, loving dog, but, if anyone had ever entered that house with evil intent, she would have ripped them apart. You could just tell that.

My dog never wanted to jump on strangers nor would I have let her. She might wag her tail and hope to get petted, but I'd keep her away from people unless they wanted to greet her.

I always carried bags for picking up crap when I took my dog on a walk or to a park, whatever, but was often appalled b/c a significant minority of dog owners don't bother to pick up after their dogs.

I think it was Ocean City, MD where I saw a sign indicating that officers could check anyone walking a dog and the person must by law have a suitable bag or device to pick up dog crap. Otherwise, officer writes a ticket for a $50 fine.

The beauty of the law is that the officer doesn't need to see the dog crap and the owner walk away without picking it up. The burden is on the owner to always have the means to pick it up if he is walking his dog. Pretty simple burden to meet if you're more responsible than a stereotypical 13 year old.

Self-entitled assholes. That is the problem with this area. Everyone thinks because they have some shit job with a government contract they are special. Wake up. You aren't. Leave your pets at home asshole. We both know if your dog shits or pisses in a store you aren't going to clean it up.

No you won't. You probably don't even go to Home Depot. If you do it's probably for a soda or lightbulbs. People like you probably don't even own an establishment to improve. lol. nice try.

also if you did decide to commit a crime of stabbing a dog.. you'll probably mess up and cut yourself. the dog will probably attack you and the owner will probably knock both of your teeth out and hold you down until the police come and arrest you. while that could be mildly funny to watch, i'd advise you just grow up and move on, loser.
