Czaban/Cooley The Drive

I Moved fm NOVA in January to SE VA and listen to The Drive from time to time via ESPN 980 app. I learned yesterday, while listening to them say a final goodbye to Gary Williams, that as of next Friday the show will come to an end. Does anyone know if Czabe is leaving the time slot or just Cooley/Galdy? What's the word up north?

Chabert staying on that time slot and will be reunited with Andy Polian. Cooley will be doing a morning show on the same station.

ANYTHING is better than those two asshats at ESPN in the morning and Cooley was/is actually pretty entertaining on the radio. Good deal. Something interesting to trade back and forth with between him and the Junkies.

Surprised that they are dropping Mike and Mike. Didn't think the suits would let that happen.

A big portion of their ESPN licensing fee includes this kind of crap programming. Once the current licensing fee expired, Red Zebra (Dan Snyder's company that owns 980AM), made a command decision that rather then pay exorbitant licensing fees for a nationally syndicated show with absolutely ZERO local references and local relevance to the DC broadcasting market, they have chosen instead to bump up their local talent who have all polished their skills here for several years now and go with 17 hours of live and local.
It costs them less to use in-house talent to fill 17 hours, then it does to pay ESPN for use of Mike and Mike instead. Oh, they'll still be an ESPN branded station but, that's just to tie them overnight each day until 5am when they return to local programming.
The challenge will be now the station has to sell all of that advertising locally itself instead of relying on ESPN's national sales team to bring in the big fish. If you have skill and experience in DC radio ad sales, this would be a really good time to pursue a position there...
