There are a lot of really great places within driving distance of the dmv. Shenandoah is huge, tons of great hikes there. Harpers Ferry, Lost River WV, Canaan Valley WV, Dolly Sods Wv, Eastern shore is relatively close. What are you looking to do exactly?

I haven't done it yet, but kayaking seems like a lot of fun especially in the bull run area.

Several spots to fish...

Huntley Meadows is a beautiful area to see/hear a lot of animals and has a decent length path for running as well as one that goes over the wetland area.

There are several farms you can visit and pick produce.

Have you considered driving out to Skyline Drive in a Mini Cooper and committing suicide?

Should be outdoorsy enough for you, and provide us more riveting entertainment.

Wife just took the kids there to walk on the big deck. She said the parking lot was full of minorities blasting bass. There goes that park.

There are multiple parks and wildlife refuges in the Mason Neck area, south of Ft. Belvoir and east of I-95. Lots of opportunity to watch birds, including bald eagles, canoe, kayak and hike. Great Falls park/Patowmack Historical park on the VIRGINIA side of Great Falls is very popular, so if you want solitude go early or during the week. Lots of history and photo opportunities, plus you can walk from Difficult Run upstream to Riverbend park, a Fairfax County park above the falls, and a popular place to put your canoe or kayak in to paddle upstream. The Manassas Battlefield park is huge, with several areas acquired and added to the original park over the years. There are a variety of terrain types within the park and lots of signs giving information on significant troop movements and engagements during the two Battles of Manassas. If you like bicycling, there is an extensive network of paved bicycle/dog walking/regular walking/running paths. Two of the more significant bike paths are the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) and the Mt. Vernon Trails. If you want to drive a short distance try Harper's Ferry WVA, lots of history, beautiful scenery, and you can walk a bit of the Appalachian Trail if you're so inclined. Can't forget the C&O Canal, which starts in Georgetown and follows the Potomac 187 miles upstream to Hagerstown, MD.

There's plenty of opportunities to catch a glimpse of the non-native shitskins, particularly outside 7-11's in Annandale and Falls Church.

I'll second the suggestion of Greats Falls Park, VA. There is an admission charge unless you have a yearly national parks pass, but you can avoid the cost by going to Riverbend Park (free), parking there, and hiking about a mile and 1/2 or so to Great Falls Park. Very nice views of waterfalls and many nice hikes. Don't get on slippery rocks or too close to the water. It's very dangerous and has drowned many people.

You can also see Great Falls from the Maryland side by going to C&O Historical Park (again an admission charge) on the MD side. Hiking, nice views of the falls, and historical interest attractions.

Back on the Virginia side and along the Potomac River, Algonkian Regional Park has nice fields, picnic grounds, a hiking path through the woods, mini-golf, a water park, and river views.

Farther from Fairfax, there's Shenandoah National Park, VA with lots of great views along Skyline Drive. Great park for picnics, camping, and hiking. As mentioned, there's a big fire in the park now, but I think that's in the southern part of the huge park. The north and central sections should be fine.

Skymeadows State Park, VA is really nice for hiking, camping, and views from hilltops. There is usually an admission charge.

George Washington National Forest has many nice hikes and is just past Front Royal, VA.

On the Maryland side of the river and away from the immediate area, are Sugarloaf Mountain (nice hike to summit), Catoctin Mountain Park, and nearby Cunningham Falls State Park, both of which are quite nice.
