Willard's compared to Dickey's is like Morton's compared to Swizzlers.

Won't do Willard's even if it is free. Tried that dump 3 times because my company does that barbeque lunch thing, and the food from Willard's is crap.

Can't complain too much, because the company paid for the lunches.

Dixie Bones is the place to go.

Dickie's, Willard's, Dixie Bones, all not worth it.

Where's the best? My backyard. I got a secret recipe and none ya'll is gettin' any. So, suck it. I read this thread this morning and got a hankerin' for some. It'll be ready by supper time. Enjoy driving all around looking for some mediocre cue. I'll be at home with a cold one in my hand lickin' my fingers.

Aldie Country Store in Loudoun had probably the best bbq i've ever had. People came from miles around for it. It was interestingly enough run by a Hindu family. They really knew their shit when it comes to bbq. Unfortunately, it closed down a few months ago. I guess some health codes were violated. Never got me sick though.

The only BBQ that any good in Fairfax County was Pepper's Texas Bar-B-Q in Fairfax and Reston. They use to do a rotisserie pork BBQ that would melt in mouth. You couldn't eat a sandwich with out getting BBQ sauce on you. And, they had awesome fries.

Unfortunately Pepper's Texas Bar-B-Q sold the place to Sweet Heat BBQ.

I can't tell if this is a troll thread or not...because I know there are many people that live off crappy chain food and think it's the best and put their nose up at anything that is quality.

Do yourself a favor and take a drive to Buz and Neds in Richmond.

I use to think The Pit stop in aldie on the weekends was great, but the chicken just tastes like lighter fluid, but honestly who the hell gets chicken when buying bbq? The pulled pork is great though. Oh, and their kale salad is amazing...can't believe I almost forgot that.

You would have to pay me to eat at Dickey's BBQ.

The best BBQ that was ever in this area and it only lasted a couple of years was next to the Centreville movie complex. Doc Harry's, nothing was even close to the ribs in this area.
And I've eaten ribs in Texas, KC, Memphis, and NC. Nothing here was close.

Doc Harry's won BBQ contests all throughout Memphis and Mississippi. Hands down best.

I agree with one poster here about Dixie Bones, excellent.

Willard's lives off the biz at the Dulles Expo Center. C minus at best.
Red, Hot, and Blue. Not bad but overpriced.

Pit Boss is correct, as it works for me also as I been at it forever.
One more thing, if you cook with gas at your home, do not call it BBQ.

Get back on the subject here about BBQ.

High Cotton in Kitty Hawk, NC is the best I've had. Never liked brisket until I had it here. Chicken, pork and sides were great too

Then again, it's the beach. Everything is better at the beach.

Do you know why these BBQ threads are pointless? BBQ means so many things to so many people. So many different kinds of meat, so many methods of preparation, rubs, no rubs, so many sauces and even a school of thought that there shouldn't be a sauce. For every BBQ you find, there is always a group that won't identify that meat as BBQ.

The best we can do is discuss roasted meat preparations.

And lastly, the cheap bastards on this board rate poorly any that costs more than a $1 for a week's worth of food.

The BBQ around here is much like all of the other dine out food, average. Not one place mentioned here would last a year in D/FW, Austin, KC, Memphis....

Guys are making much better Q in their backyard than you can buy.

So, opening myself up to being pilloried (but not really caring, de gustibus non est disputandum and all that), but we love the brisket from Dinosaur BBQ. Originally out of Rochester, NY, they have one in Baltimore, and it's just as good.

OK, have at me...

*shrug* I've had BBQ in many states, I like what I like. I don't know that the owners are *from* NY and neither do you, eh? Seems like transplanting to a BBQ desert would guarantee success (though Franklin's in Austin doesn't need to do that, obviously)!

If you have had BBQ in many states, then you haven't had "true BBQ" since only the BBQ from my location of origination is the only way roasted meat should be prepared. Of course, you will never experience this because it is only available in my backyard and you must accept my ad hominem argument because I must be right since you are wrong.

The only real people here that are uniformed about BBQ are the folks who think Dickie's is good. All the other opinions such as yours can be considered quality BBQ.
But then again, often times the backyard Q done with charcoal or on a smoker (non gas) can be Top of the Line!

Unless they are Native American, they aren't "from NY".

As far as Dickey's, I haven't eaten there yet. I am going to reserve judgement until I do.

Interestingly, I was in Dixie Bones the other day (yes, I was eating roasted meat). The menu had an FAQ on the back. One of the questions/answers was "Is this NC BBQ? No." It's sad.

It's decent enough for fast food and the sides aren't bad. Another one is opening very soon next to Wegman's at Telegraph and Beulah so it's another place to go for lunch.

It is more of a Alabama Style BBQ - Tastes similar to NC style don't you think?

Flavors over by the corner of Columbia Pike and Carlin Springs. Get it with a side if mac n cheese and greens. The chicken is made to order, so don't go if you're in a hurry. It's damn good and worth the wait.

Second High Cotton (for that area)....but if you are going that far, cut your trip in half and stop at Pierce's in Williamsburg.

Nothing wrong with Dickie's though. For being comparable to the Chipotle and other counter-style ordering chains, I'm happy with what I get for the value.

I used to go a function that was catered every year by Dixie Bones.
They brought in the Ribs, Chicken and BQQ Beef.
I will say I was never disappointed with the ribs. Loaded with meat and very tender.

Pierces is not what it used to be, the sauce is really good though. Top notch.

If you are comparing Dickey's to other fast food, it's fine. If you are comparing it to good/great BBQ, not so much.

Same here - just tasteless pork "BBQ". Also, I ordered the meal and after I ordered the meal the child behind the counter says, "Our fryers are broken so there aren't any fries or anything." Well, how about letting me know that BEFORE you take my money douchebag?? So I can go someplace else. Seriously, I don't know how they get away with calling themselves a BBQ joint.

actually: even Jesus said "pay your taxes fairly"

and before him, the same was mandatory in Rome and before that taught in Greece's famous auditorium classes and schools

If you want GOOD BBQ, stop at "Chillin and Grillin Shack in Aylett. They have won awards for best BBQ in Virginia.

first of all, it's barbecue - the C stands for Cow. Brisket & ribs off a COW.

Second, in this area, Hill Country in DC is the best I've found. Rocklands is passable for those of you too afraid to go into the District.

Third, if you have to sauce it, you're meat's not good enough

and Fourth, none of it compares to doing your own. Planning on doing some short ribs this weekend. Salt/Pepper rub overnight, and 12 hours of cherry wood smoke with some apple juice in the drip pans.

Dickey's is garbage. Their food is terrible. Ribs made me sick. Pulled pork sandwich is average at best. They used to do a terrible time managing their sides. Never had fries or mac and cheese, but always had like 20 kinds of beans. And when they did have fries, they sucked as well. Dickey's is the worst.

Hill Country is definitely the best in the area. In the Fairfax area Famous Dave's is my favorite. Rockland's is also quite tasty. Red Hot and Blue is about as good as Dickey's.

New barbecue place going into Greenbriar Town Center next to the Buffalo Wing Factory. They are going to take up three retail spaces. Just started demolition, so it will probably not open until spring.

Mission BBQ should be opening some stores in Fairfax soon. They're getting close-one opened in Stafford. One Mission is here there will be good BBQ in Fairfax. Mission is one of Maryland's best exports, along with Old Bay. Meantime you can cross the border to Maryland and have some great BBQ.

You are correct. Mission BBQ for Greenbriar Town Center. If you look at the site plan at http://www.regencycenters.com/retail-space/va/chantilly/greenbriar-town-center#.WFXJBVMrK70 they have Mission BBQ down for the location next to BWF. It only shows them occupying one space, but I was told they are taking everything from BWF all the way to the end of the building.

Famous Dave's sucks ass. There is no meat on the baby backs and the fucking mac and cheese has corn in it. Only thing good there is the sausage links. Beans are passable but all their sides have jalapeno in it.....

After you figure out how to do it yourself, then going to a chain is pretty much meh.

Mission BBQ is open in Greenbrier. The line was out the door for dinner this weekend. Couldn't get in.

I have been to High Cotton, and they are real good, but next time you are in Kitty Hawk try The Pig Man BBQ. - On the right as you are heading south on RT 12.

Took some brisket out from there last week. Pleasant people, nice place. Of course, it just opened, so there were like 30 people working--will see if that continues. Alas, the brisket was dry, tasted more like pot roast. Definitely not like Dinosaur BBQ brisket.

They have potato salad for six months of the year and some sort of cheesy potato thing the other six. We're in potato salad season now. I mention this 'cause looking at their website, my wife said "What kind of BBQ place doesn't have potato salad?!" and then we found out the story. Alas, not our style of potato salad, either -- too much mustard. But I know some folks will like it.

We tried three of their sauces (all except spicy): all were good, not even sure which we liked best. And the fries were very good (though coldish by the time we got 'em home, but that's not Mission's fault -- must order the food warmer in the next car).

Of course your tastes may vary. And we're not giving up on Mission after one try! Just one man's report.

Flame on...

More than one kind of BBQ can be good. Chain restaurants and BBQ contests are killing the regional varieties, which IMHO is a bad thing. People get accustomed to one particular flavor or style of BBQ and then anything else, no matter how well-prepared and delicious, is deemed "no good". Open you taste buds a little.

To whom was that directed? 'Cause I'd absolutely agree. And it always makes me laugh whenever I read reviews of BBQ places, because they're *always* all over the place, because a Texas BBQ place gets panned by the NC folks and vice versa (and so on, with the other variations). The only time I get irritated is when I can't figure out which kind of BBQ it is!
