Westfield Athletic Dominance
Posted by: NorthernRegionFan ()

Has any one school ever dominated a two year stretch in the two major sports as much as Westfield did the past two years? Went 26-3 over those two years in football appearing in one regional final, and winning a state championship the next year. And in basketball they went 53-5, making it to the title game both years and winning it this year. Not to mention in those 4 seasons over two years, the football and basketball teams did not lose one district game, is this the most dominant two years of the major sports in region history?

What they did this year certainly doesn't get enough press. Not sure a northern region team has EVER won both state championships in the same year. The football guys that also played basketball went 39-2 with two state championships in their senior year. That's unfathomable.

Maybe, maybe not. After all, Westfield was 19-1 in Concorde District play 2011-2014 while Centreville was 16-4.

But your reply was not responsive to the topic at hand:

Has any one school ever dominated a two year stretch in the two major sports as much as Westfield did the past two years?

Westfield only lost 3 games these last 2 years in basketball when the football guys were playing. All 3 were close. They lost 3 games in football. The 3 games that they lost in football were to Centreville, South County and Lake Braddock. They lost to Cville in the playoffs but one in the regular season. They lost to LB in the regular season in '14 but creamed them in the playoffs. Same thing last year, they lost to SOCO when they weren't at full strength but they demolished them in the playoffs. So they beat every team that they played at least once.

Centreville has never been relevant in Basketball and won't be relevant in football anytime soon. Both are sports that Westfield could at least win districts in, if not go further at least in the foreseeable future. I wouldn't go around comparing Centreville athletics to Westfields.

Centreville's basketball team won 11 games the last 3 years. The last time Centreville varsity beat Westfield was on January 8th, 2010. Keep in mind they play 2 times every year. Westfield has won the last 13, you read that right, 13 meetings.

Didn't lake Braddock win the basketball and football northern region title in 2010? That's the last time I can think of a team dominating a year of sports close to this.

LB football won northern region in football in 2009 and 2010. LB basketball did not win northern region in basketball in either school year.

Did south lakes ever have a good football team? I know In the 90's and early 2000's they were a great basketball team, did they ever have football to match?

I'm surprised they aren't contending after getting all the Floris and Fox Mill kids.

They had 3200 kids back then, but the talent in basketball was nowhere near as good. Would be unstoppable if they still had 3000+ kids.

I played football and Soccer for Washington Lee in Arlington. I graduated in 06. Nothing special about Westfield. Their kids aren't more athletically gifted than most. As another poster commented, they had 3000+ kids going to that school. The only real advantage they had in most sports was sheer numbers. I remember playing them in football, and they had a completely different team every quarter. They'd put in the first team for the first quarter, rotate 2nd string in 2nd, 1st again in third, and when the other team was gassed, just put in the water and towel boys.

Soooo how do you figure their basketball team being the first team from fairfax county to win a basketball state championship in 35 years? That just sheer numbers? The thread is about total dominance, not one sport.

They used to have huge numbers but explain their success now. Multiple schools in the Concorde district itself have more kids than Westfield. Their student body lives within the CYA, HYA, and SYA areas so they benefit from great youth programs. Additionally, they are very well coached. Numbers might've been a factor then but now not so much.

Annandale has won 6 state titles in football including the back to back titles in the 90's. In 1978 they won the USA Today National Champtionship. Westfield has a ways to go before they catch up to that....they have a pretty good start.

Westfield has also only been open for 16 years... Plus during none of those state championships did ananadale win a basketball state championship

Heroin must be a miracle drug don't you think? BTW, when did they win a national championship? Like I said, Westfield has a ways to go before it is in the halls of fame like the classic power houses of the 60's and 70's.

You're completely ignoring the whole point of this thread in MULTIPLE SPORTS. Not just football.

What is/was the USA Today national championship? That newspaper was founded in 1982, wasn't around in 1978.

I see your 3 Region titles and 1 state title and raise you, 2 State titles! Still want to claim your run was better?

Young pups think 2 years winning State Championships. Try a little research on Hampton High, Pheobus, etc. No CITY has had near dominance compared to Hampton.

2017 will show how short-lived Westfield's run was...

Hey old man, for a school that's been around for only 16 yrs to have 4 state titles in football is pretty astonishing, (plus back to back state titles)an throw in the basketball state title last year, pretty good.

Btw Centreville has owned Hamtpon past 4 years, live in the now.

Only difference is Westfield, as all other public schools in Northern Virginia, do not recruit/cheat/falsify documents to build programs as they do in the southern part of our state. When was the last time a coach from this area was suspended for recruiting violations. Then while on suspension got in trouble again for recruiting. That's one of many stories over the years in regard to the cheating that goes on, mainly in the Beach area schools. And by the way, that dominance has run its course as far as 6A football goes. Since 1999 the breakdown of state champions goes like this, 12 from the NOVA area, 4 Beach area schools, 2 from Richmond. Bottom line is there are more quality teams in the Northern Virginia area now than anywhere else in the state. We don't cheat up here, we do it the old fashioned way. Get the kids in the youth programs and coach them up all the way through high school. Teach them to honor and respect the game, play hard, don't cheat, let the cards fall where they may.By the way, the original post was about winning state championships in two separate major boys sports. So stop living in the past, your glory days are over.....

Ocean Lakes coach caught illegally recruiting and playing kids not from his school zone, cheater! That coach leaves goes to Catholic school and caught cheating again and they are in trouble again! Can't say that happens at CVHS or WHS.

And powerhouses come and go.

Annandale likely won't be a sports powerhouse again anytime soon, although it was one for about 50 years. W-L in Arlington was the area's sports powerhouse when it was the largest school in the state (for many decades) until the 70s.

If Fairfax builds a new high school in the western part of the county that would definitely affect sports at Westfield.

Westfield is about 600 kids under enrolled right now and that number will keep falling. The county adding more kids to the Westfield Pyramid is more realistic than them taking away kids and building a new high school, especially consider the lack of money for FCPS. If anything Westfield will get more kids from surrounding school pyramids (Centreville, South Lakes, Chantilly) and be even better than they are right now. Youth programs in the area are very strong right now and demographics are almost perfect for sports.

CVHS returning to glory, class of 2019 & 2020 stacked! Best QB in district by far Presley Egberts. Backfield is loaded once again. Edmonds, Price & Woodson transfer.
