The LaVar Arrington show...where to begin? LA is probably a likeable guy, albeit cheesy, but sorry-I don't think he is smart enough to fill 4 hrs of airtime/5 days a week. I would have thought they would give him a crash course in professional radio broadcasting but if they did, i can't tell. I'm still listening though and hoping it turns around for Chad Dukes' sake. I can hear him holding back when LA is searching for the right word and ends up using the wrong one. He wants to jump in and throw LA a lifeline. I miss Jim Rome.

Haven't listened to him yet, could he be any worse than Anita Marks on MASN?

I remember when LA refused to sign some contract that all rookies do so that trading card companies could produce his image on their products. Fleer accidentally produced a few before the caught on and pulled it, so all his rookies were like $300 each.

I can't believe the focus of the hate of this board is not on Mike Wise... his show is not redeemable. He steals all his topics from the other shows, then can't deliver any funny, new, or interesting info or viewpoints. But the worst part is how awkward his show is.. how he plays old classic rock songs and clearly thinks that kind of music is perceived as trendy. Lame. His interactions with his cohost are contrived and boring. Lame. His on-air manner is pretty caustic, but the actual words coming out of his mouth are a constant attempt to be "nice" while attempting an edge.

The format does really well in Baltimore. Sometimes just because you aren't part of the target audience, doesn't mean that it will bomb. I'd much much rather have Big O & Dukes, but if this does much better then there's not much I can do to change things.

I think the issue is that these guys are all sports guys they are not radio guys. You need professional radio guys who talk sports -- like Steve Czaban. Love him or hate him, he's a witty guy who knows how to do a show and knows about sports. He's entertaining and shows some personality. Levar's perspective is the same on every topic -- he takes the p'ayer's side and Dukes takes the fans side and they have the same argument on every segment, every day. It's only been on the air a couple weeks and I'm sick of it. Lavar would be a good guest but he cannot carry the show.

Giving atheletes and coaches their own show almost never works. (i/e John Thompson, John Riggin's, Levar, etc). Surprisingly, they typically don't know much about sports other than their own and at that they seem to know their own position.

Lavar is disappointing so far. Wise is slightly better but neither is compelling radio.

Anyone else notice that WJFK only has like two sponsors (AT&T and some goofy band coming to Wolf Trap). They play the same two ads over and over and over and over and over............................

I registered here because I feel compelled to say that, regardless of his other talents/past achievements, LaVar Arrington is *horrendous* on the radio. The man can't seem to speak without tripping over his own tongue. He may indeed be a lovely person, but to me it sounds like he has the personal magnetism of a stale Twinkie. I feel sorry for Chad. :(

So happy to find this outlet for my "haterade". Will continue listening to support Chad, but this is painful. Been listening since the first show and LA seems so dumb that I actually feel bad for him half the time I'm listening. Still get a few chuckles out of Chad's comments, but not nearly the laughfest i used to have every day with BOAD. LA mispronounces words so often and unecessarily uses big words and excess verbiage that it drives me CRAZY! He spends half his on-air time promoting his restaurant and name-dropping.

He was bitching again about Mike Sellers not getting a pay increase. Fullbacks are no longer every down players. If Sellers went on the market, I doubt he would get any more from any other team than the Redskins are willing to pay (see what happened with Rock Cartwright when he threatened to walk). With the West Coast Offense and emphasis on speed, NFL teams value Tight Ends and Slot Receivers much more than Fullbacks these days.

Let's see. MoM spent most of the year at, what, 22nd place? But that wasn't a ratings disaster.

Anyway, Sports Talk won't have big ratings. But it will attract advertisers (or should).

Ironically, MOM's best ratings were when he was covering the Caps hard and was the lead in to the games

I predict that 980 moves to an FM signal and crushes JFK with superior SPORTS TALK talent

I still think BOAD could beat any of these "donks" handily in the ratings and advertising money if given the chance and some support from the station

I'm sure MOM's show was expensive, but that alone didn't justify a station flip,,,
you still have the junks in the same spot, a terrible mid day show and half of a succesful show. Substituting Lavar for Oscar doesn't make sense,,that show has become painfully boring.

If he is the guy they have in on the weekends, he is pretty damn good. It's a shame they keep idiots like The Junkies and LaVar on the air. They need more Steve Czaban types. People who actually know what they are talking about and who are entertaining.

I think i know who you are talking about, and if so i agree. Kushner seems to be the only guy at the station besides dukes with a pulse.

A sports format is going to have low ratings, especially where there are two stations in the same town. The trick is not to pay big money for a LaVar Arrington-type. Unfortunately, Michael Hughes is too stupid to understand this concept.

Bah, it's numbers for the first week. All you've had so far is people who don't like sports talk stop listening to JFK. You haven't had people who do like sports talk and didn't like "guy talk" start listening and I think unfortunately they outnumber the former.

I don't think I ever saw ratings for BOAD on DCRTV, but I could be wrong. And isn't 20th where MOM started?

I think the question now is, how are the show host going to spin it? Is it going to be usual "Things are getting better, but not where we want them...blah blah" ? Before the scapegoat was the "new" ratings system. Of course now the station has flipped to a more "new ratings" friendly format that is "working well in baltimore".

I just can't listen to Lavar and his ramblings anymore...he makes no sense at all. For example, yesterday he said Favre (or even Jesus Christ himself) should have to compete for the Vikings starting qtrback position against Sage and Tavaris...um, hey Jesus, rising from the dead and miracles aside, why don't you take a seat and let Sage Rosenfels show you how it's done.

The topic of discussion is always inane. First it was, "What is or isn't a 'sport'"? Like, is mountain climbing a sport? Is badminton a sport? Then, yesterday, it was, "What is the bigger national story, Brett Favre signing with the Vikings or Strasburg?"

This is why Arrington was uncoachable. In high school and college he was told "go get that guy with the football," and he would go do it. Then, in the NFL, he was told, "Drop into coverage." LaVar was like, "Huh?"

The only thing he knows about the game is to "go get the guy with the football." Just like LT. LT never dropped into coverage. He blitzed on every play.

Do they speak from their asses any more than the Junkies do? I doubt that. There's lots of firm statements followed by "does that sound right?" or "I think that's right."

These clowns need to STOP spending do much fucking time talking about Jason Campbell. Every day it's the same damn thing, is he good? No. Is he bad? Yes. Then LA and CD have the exact same conversation they have had every day since the format change. A 3 hour "discussion" about Jason Campbell, the most boring, least interesting QB in the NFL.

And while we're at it, why does THE FAN seem to talk about nothing other than Redskins football? It's as if there are no other teams in the league or something. Or maybe other sports? Football is in season and the only teams they talk about are the Redskins 95% of the time (with JC the subject 90% of that time) and Baltimore 5% of the time (with the subject being how much better they are than the skins 100% of the time)

I truly don't think LA has a good grasp on general football let alone any other sport as is evidenced by the fact that he has NOTHING to say, silence, if the subject is anything other than the Skins or LaVarr. God, it's painful listening to him sit silently while MMA fighters are on or baseball players. He was a terrible choice for this role.

The sad part is, this was actually an awesome topic a few months ago on the Big O and Dukes show. They had callers, discussions, arguments, and it was great. Why? Because Chad could speak his mind and have a "don geronimo"-style blow-up at the retarded callers before hanging up on them.

With the new show, Chad is trying to show some excitement but Lavar doesn't get it and Chad isn't able to berate and flush callers like he could before. That became evident week 1 when Lavar was keeping Chad from hanging up on people.

Interesting how what little air there was in the room when this show began evaporated once the actual season began and the worst fears of the team were realized. Everyone went from saying they don't give a shit about The Fan 106.7, to actualy not giving a shit about The Fan 106.7.

I do have to wonder though how much of it is a lack of overlap in listener ship on this board. It has held its position of where it was, not gained ground (where I thought it would), so it's not a complete and utter failure. Maybe just jettisoning O'Meara was enough to make it a great deal more profitable.

I don't know if this board was around back then, but I have to wonder what the reaction would have been when HFS flipped to El Zol.

Sports Reporters are still king compared to Dukes and Lavar.

I think its funny how JFK says 980 has biased coverage. While they are owned by Danny Boy, I think Andy and Steve hammer the skins constantly. Also, DOC Walker can get pretty worked up over some of the Skins' stuff.

Anyway, The Fan is a weak as hell sports talk station.

When HFS switched to El Zol I think it was sort of a big deal in theory, but not really.

Let's face it, the last glory days of HFS was when REM, 10 Thousand Maniacs, U2, Radiohead, etc...were getting air time. This all ended around 1998.

Then the shift in alterna music went mega corporate. Limp Bizkit happened, Korn Happened, that stuff took over HFS. There was no more indie-ish music getting played on the grand scale. What a rip off. HFS could be playing really awesome stuff that people like. Shit, half of the commercials out there today on TV are indie bands making a buck cause they won't get played on radio. HFS became like DC 101 (which is rotten.)

I long for a really impressive radio station - but most people are just way to into corporate drivel to care, and it sells to the youth.

XM Radio is I guess the answer for all of this if anyone cares.

I will listen to my ipod and Sports Talk 980.

I agree on the Sports Reporters. Andy and Czab are great and speak like informed adults, until Dukes and Arrington. However, Danny Boy has been gradually gutting 980 and turning it into his corporate mouthpiece (note the Joe Theismann Show). It's only a matter of time before Larry Michael is offering "in-depth analysis" at that time slot.

Joey T. getting a show is def. something that reeks of a Corp. monster. I like how Czab calls him Mr. Sunshine since he is always positive about the Redskins.

I was just out running some errands and he was being critical of the Skins. So, I think its good 980 hosts (for the most part) and staying objective.

Wonder what Robb(aye) is doing, hahahahaha....prob. eating Boar's Head Ever-Roast Chicken like grandma used to make.

I think the one band that blew my mind that I heard from only HFS was At The Drive-in. The rest was really lame indie bands with DJs acting like the were edgy for playing it. That plus a hell of a lot of Eminem, and I've never cared for Eminem.

At The Drive-In def. were more in the spirit of early HFS, I agree.

So many good bands that could be heard just aren't. HFS WAS legendary, but let's not kid ourselves, it hasn't been for many years. Might as well have a power packed Spanish station instead.

If HFS was around today, I Do think it would be slightly better. Bands like Kings Of Leon have broken through, etc. It seems the faux punk, rap/nu-metal scene has died down. We just need to get past the fake emo stage.

I could see a modern playlist of Kings of Leon, Death Cab, Radiohead, Feist, Doves, and classic alterna - Smith's and shit of that ilk to be played. Ha, that would be the day.

Oh well, more shit rock for DC. Kids today will never have a chance to develop taste - no exposure to decent shit. hahahaha

You're right about that playlist, and for that I'm glad that there's not another station on my dial playing the shit out of KOL (though admittedly they probably would have gotten to them on the prior CD). But I think DC is just way too white collar to really be a rocking city.

Another thing that is unfortunate about the area radio is that there are no college stations. WGMU is basically internet only and downstairs at the Johnson Center. When I lived in the Boston area I used to love recording the punk/metal show that came on some college station late Sunday.
