BLACKSBURG, Virginia (AP) -- Virginia Tech shut down its campus Monday and ordered everyone to remain inside as authorities searched for an escaped inmate suspected of killing a hospital guard and a sheriff's deputy.

William Morva, 24, had been seen near the campus, authorities said.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Cpl. Eric E. Sutphin was closing in on him Monday morning along a trail off the university campus when he was fatally shot, the sheriff's department said.

Officials canceled the first day of classes for the more than 25,000 students at Virginia Tech as a precaution.

"We did close the campus and asked people to stay in dorms and academic areas," campus Police Lt. Vincent Houston told The Associated Press.

Morva, an inmate at Montgomery County Jail, escaped from a hospital early Sunday after overpowering a sheriff's deputy taking the deputy's gun and then shooting an unarmed hospital security guard, authorities said. He had been taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital for treatment of a sprained leg and wrist.

Police narrowed their search to an area that includes the university campus, about one block from the Blacksburg Police Station.

Authorities swept the area using helicopters and dogs.

"Whatever it takes, until he's caught," said police Lt. Joe Davis.

Morva had been jailed awaiting trial on charges of attempting to rob a store last year.

The hospital security, Derrick McFarland, 26, was shot and killed when he tried to help the deputy Morva had overpowered. The deputy was in stable condition with injuries he suffered in the attack.

i dont know where you got that article but it's written way out of sequence. from what i could tell this is what happened:

• William Morva, 24, attempted to rob a store sometime last year.
  
• in jail Morva leg and wrist were sprained somehow.
  
• Morva is taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital for treatment.
  
• while?/after? Morva overpowered a sheriff's deputy (name and age not stated) somehow (probably by wounding them as the deputy was wounded), that was gaurding Morva taking the deputy's gun
  
• a member of the "hospital security", Derrick McFarland, 26, was shot and killed when he tried to help the deputy Morva had overpowered (with the deputy's injuries or in subduing Morva?).
  
• the deputy is treated and is in stable condition.
  
• police narrow their search to an area that includes the university campus, about one block from the Blacksburg Police Station.
  
• authorities swept the area using helicopters and dogs.

it sounds like a crappy deputy. i mean, Morva not only overpowered [by injuring?]/[and injured] them but got the deputy's gun as well.

also, the article says Morva killed the sheriff's deputy (from the hospital) and not the sheriff's cpl.

whoever wrote this article needs to be hit upside the head.

It also appears that the deputy who was killed didn't have luck on his side, as he sure as hell did in another incident...

actually, i have no idea what my parents would think. unfortunatly with the current prison system they are not interested in reforming people at all. if it had, im sure this escape wouldnt have happened. i am upset by how fucked up the court and prison system are. im not against him being killed but i am against those who claim to enforce the law to break it. had some guy on campus seen and killed his ass i would be fine with it.   :)

Likewise it's a 25 cent solution to making sure we don't have to read another one of your stupid posts ever again. However the most preferable option is not always the legal option and we have to live with it.

Gravis - you could be right about the jail thing!! the NY Times article indicated that the christianburg police had put em in with the sodomites months ago and he had been repeatdly raped. Maybe he was at the hospital getting treatment after another encounter, and didn't wanna go back to that shit. Yikes! No excuse in the end for cold blooded murder, but I suppose he'll get his own jail cell now.
