Anybody see this story on FOX5 tonite? Apparently Sterling Police bought flashlights that can sense the presence of alcohol by shining it on a citizen.

That's pretty cool technology if it really works. Pretty scary to think that our govt. now has that kind of power.

How long before FCPD starts using this?

I'm more worried about that new anal probe drug test that tells if you have done any illegal drugs in the last 6 months or so.I hear they are testing it on the Gays in the adult detention center before rolling it out county WIDE.Designed for use at DWI check points,the probe 400 gives a indication of specifically what drug was consumed and how long ago by fecal analysis.We better wake up in this county or we won't have any freedom or privacy left !

I drive tractor trailer....in 1989, in Baltimore Co., 2 kids running from the cops, ran a light and I hit them broadside at over 45 mph. They didn't have a prayer.

Yes, I saw that on FOX news and it's nothing new. Police also have clipboards that will tell of a possible DUI. The clipbaords worked better because they are usually closer to the subjects mouth and noise. Most people sign with clipboard again the steering wheel.

The light on the clipboard goes red to indicate alcohol.

Many years ago, a friend of mine was crossing 28 and was killed.

At the time, I blamed the driver of the car that hit him.

Now, I believe that he made a bad decision when he decided to cross 28 where, when, and how he did. Unfortunately, the results of his poor decision were death.

And the law backs this up, too. The driver was not held liable for his death.

I saw the light as well. And then it said that they've now got an oversized RV that can give you a breathalizer w/o taking you to the station. I thought that they could give you a handheld one? I don't know since I never drink and drive.

Fairfax County Police already use these.

The handheld breathalizer (PBT - Portable Breath Test) is not admissable in court as proof that you're drunk - all it's good for is establishing probable cause for an arrest.

As for the flashlights, FCPD has been using them for at least a year (I think longer) at their checkpoints.

Shouldn't probable cause be established before they can "passively" search someone with one of these?

buddy of mine took a driver improvement course and he said that the instructor told everyone they mount these things on flashlights, clipboards and any other thing that they wave at drivers when they are pulled over. That was two years ago so FX PD has had them for a while and been using them to nab DUI's

is anyone against these? the only possible reason for not liking these is if they pull more people over just so they can play with these toys. however, i can see it being annoying when they hold the bright flashlight in your face. the only other reason to be against it is if you drive drunk.

sounds like an anti-drunk driving post.

Now, what you do is pull up to the checkpoint with the A/C on full blast away from the officer. Then ask if that light/clipboard is looking for alcohol in the air. When the officer looks suprised, tell him you dont consent to the check. Then drive off.

I have my doubts that this would be effective. In Virginia you waive most rights regarding search and seizure of that type of evidence when you sign for your driver's license. The cops can even force you to give blood or piss if they so choose, or you lose your license on the spot. My friend had to do so when the cops said they suspected he was on drugs while driving, and while he was vindicated (looking wasted all the time has never been helpful to this guy, but he WAS merely sick), he was also humiliated.

Plus you can't just drive away from a sobriety checkpoint. The police can run any kind of checkpoint they wish as long as they target EVERYONE, so says the supreme court.

I personally would give up my license on the spot rather than do any of the above. I might be walking home, but I'll be walking with my head up.

no, no... what you should do is start slashing your arm with something until you get a good flow going and scream, "TAKE IT! DON'T YOU WANT IT?! TAAAAAAAKE IIIIT!" alternatively, when they say they want your blood or piss, scream, "YES! I WON! I WON! THIS IS GONNA BE AWWWESOME!" and if you are outside the car, start dancing around and ask to get your picture taken with the cop that told you.
