Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Advertises Tax Rate Increase
Posted by: Unaccompanied Alien Minor ()

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has authorized a maximum advertised real estate tax rate of $1.13 per $100 of assessed value for the FY 2017 budget, four cents higher than the current FY 2016 rate. This is in line with the recommendation of the County Executive, aka Section 8 Sharon, who has also provided guidance of a 3% transfer to FCPS. This does not fully fund FCPS and leaves a gap of $54 to $58 million.

The question is, "if this doesn't fully fund FCPS then why even do it?" Seems like a half ass solution. If you're going to raise my taxes then do it right and have that raise actually resolve the issue.

The rate should have been raised to $1.17 per hundred with the entire increment going directly to FCPS. You don't want to eat the seed corn or the goose that lays the golden eggs.

You can thank Kathy Smith for not fully funding the schools.

So if I ask for a 5% raise and I only get a 3% raise, that constitutes a "cut" of 2%?

People around here have been exposed to the BS budget nonsense counting methods for so long that they now accept it.

I'm still in shock. Both ex school Board members Dan Storck and Kathy Smith voted AGAINST a 5 cent tax hike that would have provided $24M more for the schools.

So the Board of Supervisors voted 7-3 in favor of the 4 cent increase.

Kathy Smith and Dan Storck, charter members, winners of the "dim bulb" award.

The 5 cents wouldn't "fully" fund the schools. They wanted 6 cents. Because our elected officials don't understand the basic premises of what they are voting on or how budgets work they screwed up on 5 cents. Pretty sad.

I am glad it was only 4 cents. I don't need my taxes going up any more.

You don't want to pay for them, but you do want great schools, parks, rec centers, sports facilities, and all the other fancy services that the county provides. What a fucking dope!!!

They refuse to take care of the real problems or refuse to acknowledge that they ARE problems -- too much PC -- FCPS

I blame this whole mess on Kathy Smith! Her vote is what did it.

since when does MORE MONEY equate to better schools - Supt Garza can't do her job and allocate resources among competing interests and find efficiencies - instead she simply asserts that FCPS NEEDS MORE MONEY - they say they've cut $500M which is less than 2% of the FCPS spend - this is government run amok...
