+1 about Coach McColley. Tell it to the higher ups at Gatehouse. McColley and Checko are members of the Good Ole Boys Club and stick together.

Brett McColley has driven Woodson’s baseball program into the ground. He is just as much of a bully and as toxic as Checko. Woodson baseball players deserve better.

What’s going on with the Gatehouse investigation of Checkosky? Will Woodson finally be relieved of this dude soon?

I dont think any Head Football at Woodson, under Dan Checkosky, has been there for more then 3 years, since he became the DSA at Woodson.

Will the current Head Football Coach fall under the Dan Checkosky Curse and not stay past 3 years? Odd are favorable, he is one of the top candidates for the TC Williams job.

VA sucks. If TC picks him up it is their loss. He has a contract at Woodson for year 4. Woodson has no football talent no matter who the coach is no matter who the assistant coach is or athletic director.

I think the point they were making is that Checkosky drives some good coaches away. With changes made every couple years, you cant establish a program of consistency. So therefore, players lose interest and the better athletes stay away. Van Aker is working hard to try to build the program and most believe he has it heading in the right direction. It would be ashamed if he leaves and they have to start over.

If Checkosky was a minuscule problem, this thread would not have lasted since 2016!!! The Gatehouse administration and Woodson principals refuse to remove him despite YEARS of complaints from anyone who comes in contact with him.

HS sports ARE about building friendships and developing skills but not at Woodson where athletes are treated like shit or not even allowed to play thanks to the disastrous coaches Checko hires and the good ones Checko lets go (or drives away).

Every school has haters. Whether it’s the coach or the AD. The haters will always blame someone or something. This is at every school. If a team loses, its the coaches fault. It’s never that the other team is better or possibly the student-athlete didn’t play well.
The AD always screws up in the mind of a hater. Hiring of a crappy coach. This is laughable. In this day and age, there has never been a time that parents do not have a hand in sabotaging the coaches decision making or philosophy of team success. As soon as a parent bitches about a coach to a kid, the kid is tainted. In the old days, parents did not blame the coach. They usually picked out the issues of their own kid. For example: this is what you did wrong or you could have been better here. Now it’s your coach put you in a bad position or your in the wrong spot in the batting order. It’s sad.
This whole thread is about haters. Folks that must have not gotten their way. This thread is basically a sign of the times. It’s kind of sad. I feel very blessed to have played in the 90’s into the 2000’s. The time when it all fell on the shoulders of the kids.
Stop making the world soft for kids, make the kids tougher to battle a harsh world. My two cents.

Life is unfair and kids should learn that at an early age but parents also have the right and the responsibility to stand up to an AD like Checkosky who bullies kids and anyone else who disagrees with him.

All I see in this thread is a bunch of parents making excuses for the inability of their children to live up to the expectations of the PARENTS. The children are fine, they understand that they have failed in one way or another. The parents refuse to believe that anything bad that happens to their child could possibly be their child's fault. Get over yourself. Your children are not perfect. Not everybody wins in the real world. I have known Dan personally for over 15 years and let me tell you, if anything, he looks out for the kids at Woodson more than you will ever know. He constantly stands up for them at staff meetings and will have a kids back as long as the kid is honest and truthful with him.He is a very good AD. I have had kids play at Woodson and I have always felt they were in good hands. Let the man alone.

They surely didn't abide by the FCPS athletic rules. The boy actually bragged about it to his baseball teammates and classmates. Dad took care of it. Checko is part of the good ole' boy network, As is Curran, who is supposed to supervise these clowns.

How can Dan control what happens as far as punishment for his son if his son plays at Robinson. Wouldn't that fall under the control of the Robinson AD and Admin?

^^^^Exactly. Jr. was playing the same week after getting caught at school vaping. He laughed about it. He also didn't face any FCPS disciplinary action after he was caught drunk (puking drunk) on the night of one of the homecoming dances. Daddy talked to Robo DSA Ferrell and everything was taken care of for Checko Jr. It was very strange though because the dad cut the kids hair, as in shaved his hair, as punishment for getting drunk the night of homecoming. Odd family. The 'independent FCPS investigator Lisa Alexander' needs to look into all the issues with Checko.

I don’t know have any confidence in Lisa Alexander investigating anything independently. Gatehouse wants to cover up the corruption and incompetence of both the Woodson and Robinson ADs. Bill Curran, FCPS Director of Student Activities and Athletics, refuses to step in. So do the principals and the school board.

Maybe the media will expose what has been going on for years at Woodson. They should interview past principal Jeff Yost and the many coaches who left Woodson because of Checko.

Danny was a sophomore when the hair shaving happened. I guess the dad sees himself as a real tough guy....kind of like 'the Great Santini' character. And just like the Great Santini, he's an a-hole jerk who thinks he's making his kid tough by using these crazy punishments meant to embarrass him. The kids, to include my own, thought Danny Jr. was a nice guy but they also knew he didn't have to play by the same rules as everyone else did. They felt bad for him with some of the stuff the dad would pull. With Jr and the daughter playing college sports in VA, I'm wondering how those leave and vacation hours are looking for the dad with both of them playing spring sports this season. It was pointed out a few times last college lacrosse season that the dad didn't seem to have an issue making midweek games at JMU.

Robert Duvall was masterful as the Great Santini character and a dead ringer for Dan Checkosky.

After all the turnover the football program has had I’d imagine that most aspiring head coaches are leery of taking a job that has below average talent in its district and a pain in the ass DSA. Better to be an assistant then take on a job where you are guaranteed to fail.

Dan Checkosky finally retired after torturing students and staff for 17 years as DSA. He will not be missed. Will Woodson hire a competent and empathetic DSA to replace him?

So was he quietly moved out of the position or did he retire? I can't see him willingly retiring from his cushy gig at Woodson. Apparently Blair Smith (former South County minion & maybe Centreville?) has taken over the position. As for the Check, rumor has it he's now working as a special ed teacher at Osborn Park HS. I can only hope his temper has been mellowed and his arrogance is in check. Special Ed kids need and deserve nothing but the most compassionate and supportive adults teaching and guiding them. Checko's reputation and temperment should exclude him from being around kids, let alone special needs kids.

Dan Checkosky as a special ed teacher sounds like a train wreck. I feel sorry for those kids who will probably be yelled at and suffer lifelong damage from this guy.
